1) We have to stop pulling Haarms out to double team guards. It's not working.
2) Trevion played much better. I think playing against more sizable defenders brings out more aggression.
3) Transition D and 3 point D are non existent.
4) The ball needs to be in Proctors hands at crunch time. I love Eastern, but he is not a crunch time scorer.
5) Wheeler needs to stop trying to high fly every put back. Just lay it in.

All in all, this team will be OK. Biggest gap is defense right now.

Never could put them away. We got sloppy every time we had a chance to stretch out a lead. Would be nice to beat Smart sometime.

1) completely agree- he loses track of his man far too easily
2) the small teams aren’t a good matchup for him. When every player is much quicker and scrappier it is hard to get him the ball
3) yep
4) agreed
5) eh. He’s playing with some jitters seems like. He needs to calm down a little bit.

On 1 - the backside man is supposed to drop down and cover until Haarms(or Williams if he's in) returns low. Tonight that guy wasn't getting to the spot quickly enough. Understand what you're saying but it wasn't Haarms' fault mostly.
Pretty much agree on the others. Building the team will be a process, like it was last year and the year before. They'll get better quickly as the season progresses, just like last year.
Texas will beat a lot of teams this year if they play like they did tonight- they're better than I expected.

Our biggest gap is always defense this time of year. And we always put it together by midseason. That's why I'm not too worried.

Totally agree wi th building the team. Same thing happened last year. I'm pretty pleased with the roster and depth. I think we'll be a hard out throughout the year.

How long did Proctor sit during crunch time at the end of the 2nd half? I don't generally criticize Painter's rotations, but that kid has to be on the court. He's too good with the ball, especially at the end of the shot clock.

That was a tough, long, and athletic team we played tonight - it should be a good lesson going forward.

yeah and we learned the same lessons when we lost to them last year. It sucks that we can’t carry the lessons learned into the next season.

Rotations tonight were brutal...and, it definitely contributed to the loss.

Biggest concern to me coming out of it was the fact that Shaka Smart essentially ran the same thing that he did at VCU against Purdue when Purdue could not slow the PG or handle the high pick-and-roll, and, had the same success as well...Purdue has long had issues with elite Point Guards.

Purdue's strength this year should be at the defensive end...it is going to have some struggles at the other end, and, those will be compounded if rotations/substitutions are as poor as they were tonight.

I kept saying the same thing during the game...Purdue just never was able to get any true separation. The greatest missed opportunity in that regard was a 5-point lead that should have been extended to 7 when an alley-oop (that would have blown the roof off in Mackey as it was in the midest of a run already) was missed, and, compounded by those that were at the offensive end were not back at the other end when Texas buried a wide-open "3" capping a literal 5-point swing.

It would be nice as you said to be beat Shaka at some point, as well as Chris Beard...both have definitely had Purdue's/Painter's number.

I think you are off on number 1, but the rest I agree with. When Haarms comes out to hedge the guard, Wheeler should have rotated into the middle. That's his job. If you watch, he is just standing out there watching the ball with no Texas player around him. Sims just slipped by him for an easy cut to the basket.

Some of his rotations sucked yesterday And this team is not Deep like everybody says.

We were in position to win this game and let it slip away. I will bet the guys are as pissed about it as any of us spectators. It will be a good lesson learned that will pay benefits later this year.

It is why we play a tough schedule against good teams. Our team needs to learn and grow, and get tougher themselves. It is the only way to get that done.

Yes, better than playing cupcakes (I.e. Portland St) early and then get a rude awakening at the start of the B1G schedule.

This team is Still fun to watch they play hard This team can still be a good Team they will just have to play With few mistakes to beat the good teams Which can be done by a Painter coached team. Those turnovers in the last 3 minutes Did Purdue in last night. Until somebody emerges as a go to guy purdue will have to play mistake free basketball And play as a complete team. I trust painter to make it Another exciting season. Let's just put this loss behind And focus on the next game Got some really good ones coming up.

I’m sure they all are loosing that game that was there to take. My son was not pleased at all with his overalls performance but he got up got n the gym watched film to get ready for Wednesday matchup with Marquette. He

You thinking positive others not so much after 2 games
I agree let the teen mature They should get better. But I'm not going to be a dummy and believe it is not going to be harder without Edwards giving you 30 points on any given night. You got to have one of those players on your team to be truly successful in the NCAA tournament. A true go to guy I think this is what the Team will be missing this year. But again that's my opinion and I will root for purdue till the end No matter what.

I believe there will be that player or 2 that could step up and be that guy it’s just 2 games into the season that’s the only game this team has been in that situation so much season to go

I agree we have talent on this team that can step up and be that guy but will they. That will make the difference On making a deep N CAA run or not in my opinion.

Opinion is totally valid and 2 games into the season this team is figuring itself out. When they do and down the line and some games come down to the wire I can literally see a few step up and be that guy it will manifest itself just not in 2 games. The lightbulb will go off especially when u loose a game or too somebody will get mad and step up give it time to come together when it happen I believe we all gonna like what we see

And I agree I rather get beat by a good Texas team Then play a team That Purdue can beat by 40

While I realize the transitive property doesn't apply to basketball, I'd still feel pretty confident in saying PU is not beating Port State "by 40" in this lifetime. Sagarin actually has PSU ranked in his top 200 (barely) at 196,while Green Bay a team PU barely beat by 22 pts (line I saw was 23,certainly not 40) is ranked # 231. Not a huge difference but I watched GB and PSU has better shooters and would likely light up PU from 3 the same way Texas did. In addition PSU is ranked a few spots above Youngstown State,a team that UL only led by 7 at half yesterday, and ended up winning by about 20 late. I know the folly of thinking a team like UL,which is better than PU, could beat a team like Youngstown (or PSU for that matter) by 40 pts, since I only laid 26.5 with UL yesterday and lost...

One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't really make sense to compare this year's team, early in the season, to what everyone remembers as the best of last year's team(the version from END of season/tourney). It took last year's team a while to "gel" and learn/establish their roles, just as it did the year before AND just as it will this year.
I have no doubt that these guys will learn who the go to shooters are at end of shot clock, who can best rotate under to help on defense, etc. It's a process of learning to play together and building the team, just as has happened recently when Purdue has lost a lot of key components.

So, despite your realization that transitive properties really don't apply, and the fact that Sagarin ratings are really unreliable early in the season you still use both to establish your thesis? Okay.

It's a process of learning to play together and building the team, just as has happened recently when Purdue has lost a lot of key components.

they didn’t start to gel until EB went down with injury and Williams started playing over him. I believe they were 5-4 at that point

All this is great but I don't take any Information from an IU fan. Get a basketball program and I just might but until then no. I don't listen to anything that comes out of an Indiana fans mouth you guys are still stuck in The early eighties you guys can't seem to get out of that time.

Actually they started to gel around the Ohio and Belmont games(with a following win over #25 Iowa). Evan was put into the starting lineup for the Ohio game - Painter credited that game/lineup as one in which Purdue had much better movement. Tre's breakout came 2 or 3 games later.
Not my point, though - it's that new rosters and lineups take time to develop, especially when roster turnover happens such as what Purdue has had the last 3 years.

Sorry if already posted or mentioned but one other “little” change from last year is Greg Gary’s departure. He was our offensive coordinator and called a lot of our set pieces. Remember that Micah wasn’t officially added until later in the summer because of the playoffs so this new team is getting comfortable with each other and a new coach.

Great point Beef! Gary was an important part of last year's offensive capability. Micah is yet to have impact with this year's team.
