Villanova v. Purdue Game Thread

Well, Carsen Edwards still officially has a LONG way to go. Nice potential, but really struggled against good competition tonight. Look forward to seeing him get better.

When these start counting, I would prefer Spike on the floor over PJ late as I don't see PJ as a closer. Case in point his dumb foul late in the possession.

Would have hoped for a better shot attempt there at the end. However, given the shortened rotation and foul trouble with both CS and IH.....gotta at least like that the Boilers hung in there with a top team who played well. Brunson was clutch at the line in the last minute.

Basil Smotherman was a pleasant surprise. TO's still a big problem. Plenty for CMP to get on them about......thought CMP managed the game fairly well, though.

No excuses.....hopefully they learn from this.......a good game....a good test......hate the result, though. Time for a drink, Ladies and Gentlemen.....

Folks, that was a game. purdue gave us everything we could handle and then some. wish you the best of luck the rest of the way and I hope we get to do it again LATE in the tournament . Haas is a fricken mountain!
You'll have to catch us early if you want to meet in the tourney. (TIC)

I get the sentiment and it was a bad foul. Not sure what he was thinking. I want to agree with you, but honestly, of our guards, PJ played the best game hands down, which isn't saying a whole lot. Even tho he is smaller, PJ is a better defender than Spike.

I know it's only one game, but the lack of athleticism in our backcourt is staggering. None of our guards have a first step to get by a guy (I'll include Vince in that category as well). Maybe Carsen, but he is a freshman and we can't rely on him just yet.

Our guards are skilled, can pass and shoot (when open), but when athletic guards are defending us, tonight is no surprise.

It was really the unforced turnovers that hurt. There were a lot of mistakes that they should be able to get cleaned up.

I hope Taylor is back by early February. If games are going to be called this tight, it won't be easy to keep Haas out of foul trouble.

Haas was almost unstoppable down the home stretch. I just hope he doesn't struggle from the line this season.

Lack of athleticism...you hit the nail on the head. CE is a step in the right direction, but you need a lot more than one on a team.

For sure. Haas probably commits a couple genuine fouls, no doubt. But those 2 that he seems to get that are crap calls just kills his momentum. And then his ass is on the bench.......

I hear you on the FT's especially....focus, focus Boiler-son.

Great Game! People don't bitch at Painter for this lose, fix a couple of those TO's & make a few more FT's and we win that game. I thought he managed the game pretty damn good once we got in foul trouble cause the way it was looking a little into the 2nd half we were gonna get beat by 20+. Refs didn't loose it but they sure didn't help either...smh!

great assessment!

Painter cam't win big games. It's theoretically impossible, get me a big game win coach.
That is the takeaway you get from that game!? I have seen some moronic comments on here from people who don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground but this top notch.
That was a terrific basketball game against the defending champ who will be right back in the hunt this season as well.
Did you not see the incredible display of interior passing, the beautiful post play from Biggie and Haas, a masterful job of guiding the team through foul trouble for both Biggie and Haas, some damn solid play from several Purdue guards who were facing some of the best back court players college ball will offer up, and placing the team in position to win on about six straight possessions if Nova had faltered at the line just once?
The breaking point was Haas's three straight free throw misses around the two minute mark. I suppose that is a coaching failure too.
I'll agree that he has not recruited at a perennial final four contender level but that game was damn well coached and only a fool or someone pressing an agenda can't or won't see it.

Those that are blaming refs are misguided.
I didn't notice much blaming of the refs. I thought that were a number of questionable calls both ways.

But, if someone was complaining, raw foul counts don't prove much of anything. You can't assume that teams are fouling the same amount.

The team needed to make more open jumpers & FT's. Also, I thought there were 2-3 occasions where Vince should have probed the defense more instead of deferring & quickly passing it off. The guards & wings need some new plays tailored for them because it can't only be Biggie & Isaac producing against top-tier opponents. Also, defensively, Painter just can't have Swanigan & Haas playing out so far so often. He just cant. It's not going to work when it matters: he needs those two defending zones, if not 3 of their teammates as well.

I thought the D was pretty solid. I thought that the difference was that Purdue had more unforced turnovers and Nova shot free throws better.
