Thinking ahead to next year … who will back up smith at PG?

Unfortunately TKR is a ONE TRICK PONY, back down your opponent with a hook shot. Unable to take an opponent off the dribble. Can't consistently hit outside shot. Doesn't look like he is having fun. Don't look for him to stay after this year. There will be higher skilled players his size coming in the next couple years.
I hear everything you're saying and not disagreeing, but Painter does well with many of these types of players and their talent level, progression. He has some upside to work with.

We got a glimpse of his potential in the one game that Zach missed, albeit against weaker competition. I think that he’s got a lot of ability and that his game compliments Caleb’s nicely.

Morton doesn’t have the handles. Unfortunately, he’s one of those players who’s actually regressing.
Painter will need to hit the portal for an experienced PG whose willing to play back up minutes.
Bone, there are always kids assumed to be regressing that really aren't but waiting for their shot. Morton needs PT, was Mr. BB in Pa., and is a lot better than you're giving him credit for. Remember, PU is loaded with very talented players this year, counting Waddel.

I think his understanding, his vision and savvy will show more in a quicker pace.. I don't see Purdue changing a lot in that the bigs will still see the ball, but that there will be a bit more attempts at scoring even if the bigs are not all the way down the court. I think this would work well with some others. Not sure or know enough about Heide, but he puts on a dunkfest before the games...not even sure if I've seen him shoot a jumper before the game...I'm sure he has though. Course if Zach comes back Purdue will play a lot like today I think. I'm just going to enjoy this year. I enjoy so much seeing smarter play...

Your 2022-2023 National Champion Purdue Boilerkmakers shouldn't have any problem getting a quality backup pg in the portal in the off-season.
This.
No matter how we do there will be folks champing at the bit for the exposure a top program can bring. Maybe different if Edey gets drafted, but if he stays another year I see no problem selling the program to potential transfers.

If Morton worked on his dribbling I’d like to see him backup Smith next year. He is a good passer and one of our best defenders. I believe he could thrive as a primary distributor provided his handles improve.

We start someone else at the 3 who can shoot and rebound.
Morton can't do it. We have seen him try. Not a good ball handler.

I think the type of PG or lead guard or primary ball handler type and years of play available is a function of Zach in many ways in whether he comes back or not. It appears to me that some of Braden's skill set is a bit hampered by Zach and other skills enhanced by Zach. Braden's quickness ball handling and vision allow him to be effective in deferring to a low post Big that is great when having pressure on him...sustaining that pressure until the right time something that caused problems for other PGs Purdue had...further hindered by their inability to do something other than the 3 ball which at times was pressured. We saw within the offense...mainly Zach how pressure applied by the D and pretty much playing through Zach some difficulties for Purdue...that wouldn't have been a noticeable without Zach, but then a lot of other problems. Anyway, I think the needs and availability can change a bit after Zach leaves. Course I would love two Braden's...

Purdue just played MSU and their guards (a bit more combo) were quick and shooters/scorers...none that would fall under the PG or lead guard traditionally seen in their play. Yet players with their skill sets I believe may very well be effective "when" Zach leaves. When Zach leaves I think Purdue becomes a bit more up and down with a quicker pace along with a more open court.

A more open court IMO will enhance some and maybe have some others not as effective. "When" that happens guards such as we saw at MSU would be very effective since their ability to be a playmaker is easier due to spacing and pace. Space and pace would benefit Colvin as it would Braden. Fletcher would also benefit, but maybe not as much as Braden who then could operate more as he sees what is in front of him as opposed to being confined a bit today (which is best for the team).

NO way do I suggest Purdue will be better without Zach, just different which will enhance some players and hinder to a degree others and more importantly find an effective guard that can pressure the ball, handle the ball and score as well. I think it is pretty rare for a player to have the vision, passing and overall court savvy that braden has, but there are a LOT of players that can be effective in a more open court and possibly a quicker pace. To me...when your hub (Zach) is no longer at Purdue, the basketball team will take on a "slightly different" look than today whether the player in question is a one year or two year player.
Well, there is always Berg shooting 3s to enhance our guard play

Yeah, I think we may see the 5 step out a bit after Zach leaves.

Here's a question for anyone...Is there an offense Braden would not be good in?

I personally can't think of one and I don't do this to think he is all world. There are other players as good as him on other teams, but what he brings is useful for all teams...and something most will not get until they actually see his "effects" on the court. I think when the court opens up he scores more. We havne't seen it at Purdue, because he knows it isn't needed, but he can pull up 5 feet behind the arc with a guy on him and drain it and if he were on a team that needed more scoring he would have to change, but is capable.

Yes, Matt is holding on skill and upgrading on athletes with his success and "IF" you have the thoroughbreds...you can run them...more...

Can we stop with these idiotic speculations? I swear people have said the same thing about every single player on the roster over the past few years. I’ve been assured by posters on this board that everyone currently on our roster would have transferred out at some point. Guess what, they’re still here. Posts like these turn into rumors and add unneeded pressure and animosity towards these players.

Playing time? Morton's playing 26 minutes a game.

Morton is who he is. He's a good defender and takes care of the ball. That's his strength. That is who he is. He's good enough to help us get to 17-1, but his game wouldn't be any different no matter how much he played other than his defense might be worse because he would be so tired.

It's not that I'm not giving him credit although I never thought he was a B10 caliber athlete. He's pretty solid defensively, but his offense is putrid and his jumper is completely broken.

with today's portal, there is always somebody available. We had this same discussion at this time last year. Everybody on this board said Painter needed to add a PG via a portal. So he added jenkins who was another 3 point shooting specialist. and then people starting talking about Jenkin's awesome scoring ability and his 3 point shooting %. But he was not a PG. Maybe painter doesn't believe we need another PG. maybe he'll add another shooter. he loves guards that shoot the three.

Jenkins is more than a 3 point shooting specialist. He’s no Braden Smith, but he is capable of bringing up the ball and getting Purdue into its offense. He also is a capable defender.

Thanks, I missed that. The Kentucky kid is earning 2 million, wonder what the difference is?

I believe it's the same issue - on a traditional student visa, they're allowed to receive appropriate/authorized NIL opportunities if the activities are limited and OUTSIDE the United States. Oscar Tshiebwe performed some activities in the Bahamas , and he is also apparently pursuing an extraordinary ability visa, which would give him more flexibility - those are usually for professional athletes, so there's that.

I don't know what Zach Edey is pursuing on this front. IIRC, those take some time and have to be approved by the United States Department of Homeland Security, so there's that on top of that.......

Yes , but I get what Wolegib is saying, that he wasn't listed as a point guard. I'm sure the coaches looked at all video available out there to see he could be a pg with his tools, and even play shooting guard as needed. I'm sure there are more out there who are shooting guards on their teams because someone else is better suited, and someone like Jenkins, Jr. had a outside shooting touch/history, to better be used on the team. They may as well be good handlers.

Don't disagree with with the Morton criticisms, but Painter likes a smart player who sees the game, team and fits. 17-1 I'll take.

Yeh, it's hard to argue with 17-1, but I think one of the general criticisms of Painter is his slow to adjust style. Some think that's why he's struggled in the tourney. Does he stick with Morton with big minutes for too long? Does he not give Newman enough minutes so that come March, Newman is in his groove?
Teams are going to key double/triple team Edey and force the ball out of his hands. The scouting report will say that the guy you want to leave open is Morton. I mean, it's not as bad as Nojel shooting 3's but he's really hesitant to do anything on offense.

Seems if there is a Visa issue with Edey that he could return in January for his senior season. Not certain what the rules are. My neighbors were from Iceland, and they have to leave the country every 6 months for 6 months.

I’m no expert but I don’t believe that applies to students.

As I recall, painter tried to recruit 4 different pgs via the portal before signing Jenkins as the best available guard left. Peck or Pack was his first choice, until he got his NIL money. I have to believe Painter knows what he needs and will look hard to find someone. Has Jenkins come close to the expectations of this board who thought so highly of him? He’s a sg who can actually dribble the ball. He’s not a pg that can shoot.

I agree he was "best guard left" when we signed him. Don't recall many if any here "who thought so highly of him". He had some decent shooting history but predominant narrative was about him losing playing time at his last 2 stops. I think he has been fine as backup to Smith, who thankfully has greatly exceeded expectations of a Fr PG.

Jaron Tibbs would be available!
But probably Painter will again go looking for an upper class transfer.
I hope this time he selects someone that averages a high amount of assists

What guard of any consequence will transfer in with Smith & Loyer playing 30+ minutes the next 3 years? We got Jenkins with both starting and back-up PG slots vacated. Probably have a better chance of getting in late flip from a class of 23 guard. Look at commits to programs who are losing their coach. If they don't pan out you can always recruit over them. Don't worry about 24. Again, recruiting with Smith & Loyer onboard will be the bigger hurdle, not whoever is the backup PG. Any opinions on Markus Burton?

Well we just need a solid backup guard that can shoot well, defend and handle the ball

Edey is earning NIL money. The Purdue NIL store released the famous Edey hockey jersey tonight, and he gets a cut of that. That’s not the only thing either.

Anyone have photos of someone wearing the actual product? I am wondering about ordering one but uncertain what it actually looks like in real life.
