Why isn't Purdue's SOS taken into consideration more for their ranking? They have the 2nd highest SOS out of the top 25. I believe only UNC has a higher one at 30 where Purdue is at 39. Maybe sometime in my life Purdue will stop getting hosed by rankings, refs and replays. I will not hold my breathe though because that probably won't happen.

The End of the World

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
If they don't hose us anymore.

I thought the Hummel/Moore years we got a lot of respect with ratings. Not so much now though with ratings on a pretty good team. I like where we are at so I say "We'll show them." Blank them.

We don't get the respect we deserve most of the time. Not sure why either. Maybe if we had a flashy coach that threw temper tantrums all the time that would help. Although I can't stand coaches like. Oh well. At least we are winning in basketball and football. Things will take care of themselves if we can get past the sweet 16 and win our bowl game.

I think it is taken into consideration. Of the 15 teams ahead of Purdue, 12 of them have 0 or 1 loss. I don't think there's a justification to put Purdue ahead of many of those teams. While the Tennessee game now looks like a "good" loss, the WKU is simply a bad loss. The 3 teams ahead of Purdue with 2 losses are to good and/or power conference teams. And Purdue is also ranked ahead of 1 loss teams that only have a loss to a power conference team (i.e. Oklahoma who has beaten 2 ranked teams and lost to Arkansas pre-Thanksgiving). So I think our SOS is taken into consideration there.

I do think part of it is that within the first month and a half of the season, the SOS is so fluid. SOS really takes shape once conference play has started and schedules get more balanced. I do think those factors are taken into consideration, but you aren't going to get heavily weighted on it favorably at this point in the year. Teams like Syracuse and Georgetown aren't close to being ranked, even though they have impressive records - so you see it play in our favor being ranked ahead of other 1 loss and almost every 2 loss team - and you see it taken into consideration when not ranking teams with poor schedules.

Agree with last 2 posters. I also think that with not getting past the sweet sixteen in such a looong time, that unless the Boilers are undefeated or have no bad losses, teens are the ceiling for Purdue with a lot of the voters. Hopefully this year we finally break through.

Many voters don't consider SOS in their early voting as they suspect teams like Arizona will get it together later in the season. and they give certain teams like Duke and UNC the benefit of the doubt. the early voting is based much on last year's results.

Unfortunately, with all the BIG 10 teams losing to easy opponents, wins against the majority of BIG 10 teams will be meaningless. and our future SOS is likely to go down. others will saw we beat a team that lost to rider. We beat a team that lost to Ft Wayne. in the past, our BIG 10 games helped our SOS , but not this year.

if you want to argue Purdue deserves more respect and a higher rating, what was our signature, statement game ? Wins over butler and Marquette? Our super secret scrimmage against WV ? a thrashing over Arizona who was missing one of their key starters? Our best win was probably the one over Louisville, and that was a team without Pitino.

I can't really see Purdue moving up any further unless two things happen - we beat MSU, or other teams above us start losing. if everybody else keeps winning, Purdue is not going to really gain any ground.

the key to a higher rating was winning Atlantis and the WUG. the media tends to vote for teams that win tournaments, rather than teams that blow away lesser opponents.

I'm not saying that's right. I'm saying that's the way it is. look where Villanova is today.

I think you're reading into things too much. Villanova is where they are today - simply because they are undefeated and have beaten good teams.

A 10-2 team that ended up on the winners bracket of a tournament and a 10-2 team that ended up on the losers end of a tournament is not going to be looked at differently simply because of that.

And someone above mentioned they think Purdue doesn't get respect because we couldn't get past the Sweet 16 last year. That has literally nothing to do with it.

Purdue is ranked right now where it should be. It's one of the highest rated 2 loss teams in the country, and it's ranked above many 1 loss teams.

I believe you just read too much into my post. If Purdue had won the Atlantis, I suspect Purdue would be undefeated, and not Villanova. and if Purdue was undefeated and winner of Atlantis, the media would be clamoring to Purdue as at least a top 5, and maybe #1. Think about it. if Purdue had won the WUG and Atlantis, how low do you believe they'd be rated ? Do you believe MSU and nova and Duke would be rated higher than an undefeated Purdue? Admittedly, Purdue never gets respect. but I have to believe an undefeated Purdue team and winner of Atlantis would currently be ranked #1.

I believe Purdue is as high or low as it is currently because of its losses more than it is because of its wins. If Purdue only had 1 loss, it would probably be a top 10 team. But at this time of the year, it's very hard for the media to vote for a 2 loss team as one of their top 10 teams. Maybe in March, but not in December. Purdue is actually rated rather high for a 2 loss team.

a question I raise, if Purdue hadn't gone to Atlantis, and scheduled a couple of other games against mid level teams like Missouri Colorado, BYU, and Vandy and they were currently undefeated and Villanova won the Atlantis, How high do you believe Purdue would be ranked? I would venture because they won Atlantis, Villanova would still be ranked higher than an undefeated Purdue. I firmly believe when it comes to the media, they like teams that win tourneys over teams with similar records and better stats.

Ratings are nice and are important. But the reality is to be the best, you still have to beat the best. and I doubt any tourney game will be scheduled for Mackey Arena, So if Purdue is a #1 seed, or a #10 seed, they are still going to have to beat teams like MSU, Nova, UK and Duke. They just be required to play them earlier in the tourney. if Purdue is as good as you believe them to be, it shouldn't matter when or where they play Duke. If Purdue is not as good as you think they are, it also won't matter what their seed is. You shouldn't go into the NCAA tourney hoping for home field advantage, the refs loving you, and an easy draw. You should go in with an attitude you can beat anybody anywhere and not worry about the bad calls.

Being ranked #12 is still a 4 seed. and being ranked #20 is a 5 seed. and the 4 seed plays the 5 seed before it plays the #1 seed. Unless Purdue somehow breaks the to p 10 to become a #3 seed, does it really matter where they are ranked between 12-20? they'd still be in the 4-5 matchup. and regardless they should win their first game.

Okay but does Purdue jump 3 loss Gonzaga this week? Or a very overrated 2 loss kentucky team? I bet they do Gonzaga but Kentucky will continue to be ranked higher due to their name

At the end of the day, Kentucky has lost to Kansas and UCLA. We have lost to Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Our losses are worse than theirs. Our wins are better than theirs, but the WKU loss kills Purdue at this time still - if we didn't have that loss, we'd be ranked significantly higher.

Are they overrated? Sure, maybe. But that's why we're in December - things will sort out during the season. It's not worth getting hung up on whether Purdue's ranked below this or that team - if Kentucky is overrated, they aren't going to do that well in the SEC (and they play Louisville next). So if we take care of business and Kentucky ultimately doesn't - we'll be ranked ahead of them.

I couldn't tell you a lick about where teams were ranked in December last year, let alone even Purdue.

The W.Kentucky loss is such an infected thorn. That said, if we don't fall again to a midget it can be an asterisk as a bad hair day. Many teams have those. Time will tell.

if we end the year with only two losses, we won't have to worry about the WKU loss. However, if we end the year with 4 additional BIG 10 losses during the season and don't win the regular season title or BIG 10 tourney, then those loses to WKU and tenn will be huge.

the biggest problem is that many people on this board have said we will realistically lose 4 BIG 10 regular season games. that seems like a reasonable prediction. however, the way the BIG 10 preseason is going, the only BIG 10 opponent that would be considered as a quality loss would be MSU. After this week, losses to NW, Penn St, IU, UW, Iowa and several other BIG 10 teams would all be considered as ugly losses. if we lose 4 games, at least two will be ugly. To avoid those ugly losses, Purdue will have to play its way to the championship game of the BIG 10 tourney otherwise, we'd add another ugly loss.

No once again it’s human preseason polls still affecting rankings this far into the season. I can’t stand it. If Purdue started top 5 they would be top 10 still

I totally agree with you. and it's been that way for the last 20 years. the media falls in love with certain teams, and even looks the other way if they have an early season loss.

No it's not fair or objective. the question is how can Purdue become one of these media darlings and be rated in the top 5 or top 10 to start the year? the answer is to make the Final 4 the previous year or at least make it one year. I don't really remember the last time Duke or Kansas made the final 4, but the facts are, they did make it. and when in doubt, early in the season, a voter is going to vote for a team that made the final 4,

or a team that has a top 5 or top 10 recruiting class. When was the last time Purdue had a top 10 recruiting class? If Purdue had signed Langford, I believe the media would rate next year's team higher. if Purdue had signed JJJ, I believe this year's team would have been rated higher. Purdue has a bunch of quality players. but the best one is a projected lower second round pick. Purdue is a quality team with quality players.

Based on their finishes in the NCAA tourney for the last decade, and their recruiting class rankings, I believe Purdue is rated about at the level the media believes they will finish. until Purdue finally breaks into the Final 4, you can expect similar ratings to continue.

But as for that bias towards teams in the early going, I don't agree with it, but I can understand it. They vote for a team they believe will end up as NCAA champion. I doubt anybody believes that team will be Purdue.

Serious question, do we win the WUG with Haarms?
Do we do better in Atlantis if Haarms played there like he is playing now?
I think the answer is yes. Purdue , with an improved Haarms has improved more than TN or W KU. I think we beat them now.

I believe we would beat WKU and Tenn 9 times out of ten meetings! I blame those losses on having too many pre tourney activities and an in familiarity with the court! We had too many threes that just didn't go through the net!

As for the WUG, I believe Haarms would have made the difference! Although not our primary offense, we could have used our twin towers to attack their big men and won!

Agree....we lost to Western Freaking Kentucky. Another midget loss is probably coming.....as everyone's best game is on the docket for the reining B1G Champs.

Agree. That’s one of the most infuriating things to me as a fan of sports. Unless you are getting check cut to you by the AD, it isn’t a we. I think this board does a prettt good job of understanding that but I think some tend to type with their emotions on their sleeves arbitrarily times. Definitely not anywhere near the pile of donkey doo you see with some other boards. You’d think some other posters from schools go and practice every day but the equipment guy forgot to clean their jersey to wear for the game.

Guess it's time to update the Paint Crew chant to, "They" Are. Purdue.

Well when I donate my hard earned money to Purdue and help pay for the staff you bet I will include myself as part as the team when I talk about them. You must not be a true Purdue fan if you don't consider yourself part of the team. Thanks for letting us know that.

All true. Have to get through the big with very few losses to move up. The stronger conferences while having better strength of schedule will also suffer more losses. That is the path up. Just win baby.

I also consider myself part of the team. And so do most successful college and professional teams. have you not heard of Crimson tide Nation? It consists of the team, the school and the alumni. have you not heard the phrase, from High School Musical - We're all in this together? . They aren't the Purdue football team, they are Purdue Boilermakers.

Seattle has the 12th man as part of their ring of fame. Without us fans, there would be no team. I believe you need a short trip to Green Bay. And bring a shovel. because the fans shovel out the stadium for free. Why? because they are part of the team.

Every student at Purdue is part of the team and that includes the band, the groundskeepers, the announcers, the venders, the coaches and training staff, the yard markers, the guy who holds the headphones, and most importantly the fans and alumni who show their support and love. the team on the field was selected and chosen by a person we hired and place our trust in.

As moms and dads, that soccer team our children played on was OUR team as much as it was our children's. Without our support, their would be no children soccer leagues or little league teams, or high school teams Without our support, many high schools are now eliminating their sports teams.

So, yes, it's OUR team, and WE are proud of our players representing US.

I tried to tell people this earlier and no one wanted to hear it. If you want a 1 or a 2 seed the margin is razor thin for a non blue blood. You can have 1 bad loss and we already checked that box. Now we have to wait for the others to screw up more than once before we start moving up.

I'd also add to this discussion - Purdue's played a very solid schedule, but it's lacked truly upper echelon games.

Yes, there's Arizona - but that game is kind of some weird enigma game that's truly hard to gauge how good of an opponent that really was (certainly not bad, but not sure I would consider them at a top 5 or top 10 team there).

Purdue hasn't played or beaten one team that it's ranked below currently. Purdue's played 2 teams it is currently ranked ahead of - and went 1-1.

The Louisville, Butler, Maryland, Northwestern, Marquette, etc. games - yeah, they aren't bad teams and are all good wins, but I'm not sure how much "proving" they do in terms of whether Purdue's a top 10, top 15 or top 20 team. Those are teams that if Purdue's #14 - we should be beating and some of them not in super tight games.

I think the struggle for Purdue is that there's 2 teams in the top 25 in the Big Ten. Credit to Purdue in that they beat most of the good teams on its non-conference schedule. And we obviously know the marquee matchup issue in that we only play Michigan State once. I'm sure we'll see a couple other Big Ten schools be ranked through the season, whether we play them or not then is another question.

Purdue's basically going to go through a conference schedule as the favorite in every game but 1. That's a lot of pressure to put on yourself and it's easy to not only let one slip, but have a team come for you every night. If we have a loss on the road to an ok team, that's not going to be easy to cancel out the next week against a ranked team.

Fair points, Ibodel. I would tend to agree that Purdue has slightly less margin for error in conference than last season. Recall the Big Ten wasn't strongly perceived then either with Wisconsin and Maryland tapering off at season's end. Michigan State is the wildcard factor for potential seeding with the Boilers, who could possibly get a second match-up somewhere down the line in the BTT. Normally, that wouldn't have much of an impact one way or another, but it could more so this year. The non-conference results this year, IMO, do put the Boilers in slightly better position.....it's all speculation, though. At the end of the day/year, the Committee will have their S-curve, and if they think Purdue is one of the top 12 or so teams, they could get a relatively high seed. Sure, that should be somewhere in line with the rankings but not necessarily exactly parallel.

There's almost always a game or even two where this team in the past has slipped......so, many might factor that in to expectations. If they play well and focused the rest of the way, the results will take care of themselves. I think it's going to be tough for anyone to knock off Michigan State....and at least at this stage, I can't see more than a couple of losses for the Spartans. I like the Boilers chances to have a very good conference season (a good start already), but I don't see it right now being enough to win the league. However, right now, I'm seeing a 3-seed type of possibility.

Disclaimer: I haven't taken off my Holiday Gold & Black glasses yet...and am still light headed from the corn dogs and Foster Farms Bowl win last evening.

I will be very interested in the game @ Ann Arbor coming up. Regardless, it should be an entertaining rest-of-the-way.....and enjoy the last ride for these seniors.....they have provided some great moments and have been superlative representatives of Purdue University as student-athletes. I'd love to see them go out with something special. The opportunity is there, and they will get some help.....and there just might be a few other good surprises along the way. We shall see.

Simply put...

As a Purdue fan: I think Purdue is a very good team. I think it has some consistency issues to work out (we were lucky to beat NW at home). And while our non-conference schedule is strong, it hasn't put us against elite teams - which in theory we would be a part of if we keep winning.

As an outsider: Going through this season, Purdue has racked up wins - and quality wins. But it has little opportunity to prove it's a top 10 team. Like I mentioned, Purdue has played 2 teams that are currently ranked - and they're both ranked below us. We basically have 1 opportunity in the regular season. The rest of our games basically disprove we are (i.e. if we lose).

My gut tells me Purdue's about a #15ish team - at least until consistency issues are worked out. We certainly can and have played like a top 10 team, but I see why there could be a ceiling in place for Purdue, particularly if there's a couple games we slip up in, which would not be unlikely on the road in the Big Ten.

And the WKU loss gave us a chance to beat Arizona, which could look like a very big win by the end of the year. I'm not convinced we'd be much higher ranked right now by beating WKU and then SMU. We'd still be within 1-2 spots of where we are now.

ok...well right now is irrelevant anyway. 2 spots is a lot at the sharp end of the rankings at the end of the season when we get our seed. It is serendipitous that zona has come around but we're still a two loss team that has already cashed its get out of jail free card.

We won’t play a team remotely close to Arizona in RPI the rest of the year outside of MSU. But we will have 6-8 chances for a bad loss. We will be thankful for the Arizona win come selection Sunday.
