They are on their board saying Edey gives a shove with his elbow everytime. Do people not know what to expect from a 7' 4" guy when he turns? Just because their face is at that level does not mean it's an offensive foul. Yes, if he extends it, I get it, but they said they will have a camera on stand by and yell at the refs to take notice. lol

It's a dilemma.

The past few years, the refs has been cracking down on swinging elbows. And I understand that they want to protect the safety of the players.

On the other hand, Zach should have a right to his own vertical space. The refs have also been calling the 'vertical space' rule recently as well, where the defender is crowding the ballholder.

Now he does sometimes give an extra shove with his shoulder/arm as he is turning. That is a foul, I believe.

But shouldn't Zach have the freedom to turn and face the basket while he has the ball? It sure seems so - even if his elbows are at the same level as the opponents face.

If a normal player turned to face the basket and swung his elbows through at the chest level of the defender, that would never be called a foul. But if Zach does that exact same move and pops the guy in the jaw, it looks really bad, and maybe even vindictive on the part of Zach, but he's just turning to the basket.

I'm not sure how the refs would be instructed to call that.

What Kofi generally is allowed to do in the post (at either end), opposed to what Zach generally is could not be more different or noticeable.

The difference head-to-head is that Zach was able to still operate offensively whereas Kofi struggled to do so in that he was not used to not having just a sheer size advantage.

Kofi is a good player and has progressed a ton even from his time that he arrived...Zach dominated him the first time around...I liked Purdue's matchup against Kofi last time, and, still do.

Frankly, Illinois was better without Kofi than with him against Purdue...which is not a knock on Kofi...it just created more of a problem for Purdue from a matchup standpoint. Williams had a bad game the first time around as well...I don't believe that will be the case tomorrow night.

Nobody (including Kofi) gets fouled consistently to the extent that Zach does...the first time that Purdue and Illinois played, the officials generally let the teams play and pretty much stayed out of the way...it made for a good game that was fun to watch....I won't hold my breath certainly because there is such a large collection of poor B1G officials, but, here is hoping that even if by a miracle (as much as sheer chance) that there is a decent crew that does the same for the game tomorrow night.

It does not matter...they are not smart enough or capable to get it right even if they were instructed correctly/properly.

There is ALWAYS a guy in Zach's "space/cylinder"...the guy is impossible to guard without fouling him almost...they just choose to let much of it go because of his size (he is penalized because of it), and, they compound it then by making bad calls against him at times when he turns and brings the ball through as you suggest.

The Featherheads know, deep down, that Zach dominated Kofi, and are scared shitless that he and Trevion will once again render their guy irrelevant….

IMO if Purdue can keep Frazier/Curbelo from having free rein, we’ll win going away.

Cockburn doesn’t scare me nearly as much as those guys do— we will again own the paint.

All I ask is let the guys turn and not call the elbow, unless it's out there. Goodness he gets penalized so much for that.

The refs have been calling Edey's games cleanly and correctly. He is entitled to his space and his size.
If Haas had that opportunity he would have been AA.

The first one is clearly an elbow. The second is not clear. The third looks like an elbow, but Kofi looks to be in Edey’s space.

In any event, the cylinder does not extend past the feet of Edey (section 39, art. 1.c). That rule doesn’t apply in the first case. Section 1 Art. 15 says that illegal, non-excessive contact of elbows above an opponent’s shoulders should result in a flagrant foul.

It’s clear in the first clip that Edey extends outside of the cylinder with his elbows and makes contact with Kofi’s head. The other 2 aren’t so cut and dry.

Edey has to play smart after all the hoopla from the first matchup. Watch for the flop like Dickinson did. Our other players will need to step up if this happens.

I get it...not often that Kofi is dominated as he was...but, I am shocked the lengths that you and others have gone to or are trying to go to.

I enjoyed watching Zach in the first matchup...I look forward to watching him and Tre match up with Kofi again tomorrow night.

A year ago this time, Illinois was 16-6 and ended up a 1-seed in the NCAA tournament...they are 17-5 now (without Dosunmo).

They, like Purdue, have a very well put together team with quality depth.

They have an electric playmaker...they have a dynamic backcourt on the whole...they have shooters...they have a dominant post...and, they are good defensively.

They are underrated nationally, as, people don't realize that they lost games without Cockburn, Curbelo or both.

They have a tough loss to Cincinnati...they have a bad loss to Maryland (absent Kofi)...aside of that, no shame at all in what they have done and they don't get enough recognition for how good they are.

They are easily a top 10 team nationally.

Happened to Purdue at SFC. Not impossible with big ten refs.

What lengths? Spending thirty seconds looking at the rule book and stumbling upon the many videos and photos documenting it? It’s indisputable is the real issue, and that just flies in the face of what this thread and forum want.

It's not Edey's fault Kofi has a glass jaw. Edey has a right to that space. That is the rule the comment about Kofi playing physical is true. He just can't do it against Zach.

Zach after all isn't this guy

But I'm sure you illwhini will be complaining about it tonight all because Kofi is up against someone that gives as good as he gets.

goodness, brother.

Anyone can cherry pick a still picture.

Edey doesn't do anything any other big does. You're sounding like a whiner.

We dealt with the Tennessee fans after their team lost the bowl game. Now you. Must be that orange color.

I literally linked the rule to the rule book. Edey doesn't have the right to the space outside of his cylinder. His elbow is outside the cylinder of his body. Any contact to an opponent's head with an elbow is a flagrant 1. It becomes a flagrant 2 if it is deemed excessive. Learn something today.

And making stupid puns doesn't do anything other than make you look stupid. Illwhini is cheesy at best.

Literally linked the video above. It's not just a still. I don't know why I bother going to a free board.

good grief, dude. You've got it bad. Stop whining.

Na the amount of whining you are doing about this makes the phrase "illwhini" accurate. Rather funny that you miss the irony of it all.

Did Zach get called for it? No? Then not a flagrant two no matter how bad you want it to be. Learn something today. Maybe get someone to explain the rule to you since it's over your head.

Curbelo is the only player that PU has no defense for. He's so much quicker.

LMAO...the first is incidental contact. There's no intent to go after Kofi's head. Zach turns holding the ball in the air to make a move and take a shot. The fact that his elbow is at head height is because he's 7'4" tall. I see more intent and contact when big men bully their way to the basket than I see on any of these moves...
