Both have similar records. On paper I actually think Illinois looks tougher. They have won 4 out of last 5. They have beaten Iowa and Northwestern twice.

Michigan will be a tough team as well. We all remember the 12 point win they had a few Saturdays ago against Purdue.

Who would you rather play?

I think we match up better with Illinois but we should beat either one.

Michigan. They're one of those perimeter-oriented teams that have given Purdue trouble in recent years. They're a tough match-up for us, but we should be a tough match-up for them.

Purdue needs confidence going into the NCAA that it can best a team like Michigan.

lol lowly Illini fan here. we just lost to Rutgers. You guys would have no problem destroying us . Best of luck to you guys in the tourney . I have some friends that went to Purdue and I hope you guys go far in the tourney.
I actually thought Illinois was playing better at the end of the season. If they win I don't want Purdue to overlook them.

I would much prefer Illinois. We don't need to prove ourselves against a team that is a match-up problem and we don't need to beat someone who has beaten us .... we need to have a solid, team-oriented win that allows our players to feel good about themselves and hopefully get a bit of rest for the guys who play a lot of minutes.

I want to see us start a crazy run to the top with this first game ... like so many past teams who have had success in the dance have done.

Exactly. In a conference tournament, I'd rather be challenged and lose than coast. Obviously it's ideal to win though...and while we have experienced players, we certainly aren't a senior laden team, there's a lot of learning going on still.

That's easy. Michigan then Minnesota. Payback for losses to both during regular season.

If I can I wanna play against Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa in a row. And I wanna play against Butler in NCAA Tourney. How idealistic that is!

Michigan would be a better win for us RPI-wise. Also gotta imagine the Boilers would be more focused against Michigan than Illinois (less chance of a let-down).

With that said, I think the Illinois game would be easier. Gotta save some in the tank for Saturday and Sunday and at this point, we need every win we can get.

Illinois. They have much less firepower.

I've made my peace with the Nebraska fiasco. It was an ugly break-down in the last minute that reminded me of Purdue's recent NCAA Tournament games. But it's nothing I'd go out if my way to avenge. There are far bigger fish to fry this time of year.

I don't care about avenging any losses. I care only about getting wins that will improve or solidify our seed or taking losses that won't hurt our seed. So in theory I think Mich is the only team between those two who will have the most minimal negative impact were we to lose.

Michigan up 15-4 @ 14:00 mark of first half. Hitting everything they're throwing up there. Sooo, we may want to be careful what we wish for...

Yeah.....Michigan is taking it to the Illini, who seem a step slow to react.....22-9 with under 12 left in the half. Wagner setting a ton of screens from the few parts of the game I have caught.

Unless things turn around, looks like the Illini are headed to the NIT, and the Boilers will have a really good challenge come early tomorrow afternoon.

Let's hope all that emotion and adrenaline dissapates in the next 24 hours...leaving them exhausted. Not an uncommon reaction even for young men but our Boilermakers will be ready for this game. Just feel it in these old bones...

Good point....there is also the mental fatigue aspect. We shall see.....not playing/rhythm is the trade-off for the rest and the #1-seed position.

We will know more, tomorrow!

Is this really close? Michigan's offensive efficiency and potency makes them a bigger threat than Illinois.

That said, part of me wants Purdue to face Michigan. I want to play the best teams possible before the NCAA tourney.

40-29, Michigan at the half. However, Illinois was down 20 and shaved this to 11...and actually missed some makeable shots or this might be a 6 or 7 pt game. I think Hill only had three points Could be an interesting second half if Michigan wears down a little. But, I haven't seen enough from Illinois to think they can come back all the way.

I've often felt the double bye teams are at somewhat of a disadvantage in their first game because it's usually against a decent opponent who already had an easier game the day before to shake loose any rust and get accustomed to playing on an unfamiliar court. I don't really think the playing on consecutive days thing is a factor until you reach 3 or 4 days straight.

That's been my observation as well

Where's the option for: "I don't care who wins, as long as their game goes into quadruple overtime."?

Totally agree. Michigan could be the toughest game we'd face if we happened to win. Right now, I wouldn't put our chances of beating Michigan any greater than a draw.

The monkey wrench could be the flight ordeal. With the event, the flight delay, the 6 am flight this morning, arriving just in time for pregame warm-ups.. they are probably running on adrenaline already.

I don't care who we play.....PERIOD! If we play to our capabilities we should have no problem beating either team! Those concerned about Mich, well if we can't beat them, then who the hell are we gonna beat in the tourney.......

Us? Sure. 20 year olds? Meh. They'll be able to get a nap this afternoon if they want and full night sleep and be fine.

Oh I agree - but I don't think it has significant correlation to the tourney. I have a bad feeling because of match-ups - and I really don't want to deal with bitching on this forum - so hopefully we win. ha

I sure hope I'm wrong. I have a bad feeling about playing them - especially when they are showing signs of being 'on'. Of course, streaky teams can also get cold quick...

I'm not saying they are or aren't my preference. But we're conference champs. Our odds should be better than 50/50 against any other team on a neutral court.

60-49, UM with just under six left. Abrams has 21, but Hill has just three. Michigan's shooting has cooled off a little, but every time Illinois could maybe make this interesting....a turnover or foul is the usual result.
