15 seconds to go and Thompson is shooting a FT. Timeout to try to freeze Thompson, but more importantly to set the offensive play. The rule of thumb for many assuming the foul situation doesn't alter the thought is that you go for the win as a visitor and go for overtime as the home team. None of that enter the fray as it will be Purdue's ball and either tied or down one ASSUMING that a miss doesn't take place and OSU gets the board for a final shot to win it all. Nothing good happens if it is a miss and Purdue doesn't rebound the ball. In the huddle you can see Matt talking to Dakota and drawing a vertical line on the board he then looks to his right and talks to Carsen. Vince and PJ are in front of him and Biggie is standing up. They walk out on the court and Thompson 5 for 5 at the line misses. Vince and Dakota "pinch" the offensive player on the right side and Biggie blocks out his man...and Carsen doesn't get the block out on his man...but it didn't matter...this time. Ball is boarded by Biggie on the left side of the lane and PJ runs to get the ball and start the push. Meanwhile Dakota "sprints down the left sideline", Carsen on the right wing, Biggie on the left block and Vince a trailer at the top alongside PJ. PJ pushes ball towards Dakota and gives a handoff to Dakota...the player Matt had talked specifically in the huddle now able to turn to his left and go with his strong hand and get in the lane if needed and be the FT shooter if fouled or hit Carsen as another option...assuming that the best post feeder now with the ball finds probably the first option...Biggie...which he did. Biggie gets it, pump fakes and Thompson bites making an obvious foul that has to be called (do feel for Thompson missing the FT and making the foul).

Timeout, 5 seconds on the clock and OSU will "most likely" get the ball tied with 5 seconds to push, down one or two with 5 seconds to push or the ball out of bounds down one or two. Bonus for Biggie, not double bonus, but the kid never to shy away from "the shot" steps to the line and hits the first. Purdue is up and Matt pulls the players off the line to set the D. Biggie misses the second, but OSU decides to play on. Purdue hustles back, but Carsen finds the ball (PJ was covering the best shooter that would come off screens -Cam Williams) and applies some pressure. I don't think it was an accident that Dakota had the ball or that Biggie was fed the ball from Dakota isolated one on one inside. I suspect that conversation with Carsen in the huddle may have been the defensive pressure and the NO chance for a foul. Purdue was very fortunate in the result but played hard and executed towards the end...the same kind of game that would have been lost a couple of years ago.

Nice assessment TJ. This last sentence is key. I don't think we win that game even last season. I don't think we would have been in position to do so. Our ability to defend length and athleticism while not ideal, is so much better than last season. PJ's shot is a legitimate threat. Carsen is a drive or shoot threat. I can go on about all the players but in short, we now put scoring threats on the floor at every position. We do not have to watch two unguarded perimeter players not shoot while our post was double and triple teamed. I have much more confidence.

CS was at the line shooting 2 FT's. It was ruled he was in the act of shooting. Originally ESPN had the graphic on the screen wrong (showing it as 1 and 1) and Jason Benetti said mistakenly that it was a 1 and 1. You can see the ref holding up 2 fingers when he passes the ball to CS. Don't disagree with any of your analysis just that CS wasn't in as much pressure with the ft's as he would have been if it was 1 and 1.

THAT was pointed out in another forum I participate. Still a lot of pressure and more pressure than on the second shot that he missed, but yeah apparently it was a two shot.

A subtle point I believe as an indicator of intentions. In the closing seconds when PJ is dribbling towards Dakota for the handoff, I believe the desire of the last few seconds was to get the ball into Dakota's hands. The fact that it was a handoff rather than a pass indicates to me the preference is to get the ball into Dakota's hands. Someone receiving a pass may not have been the first choice, but just open with the first choice not open. Therefore, I believe Dakota was the preference to make the right play. The potential problem that didn't hurt Purdue is that anytime a handoff takes place or a ball screen takes place, there are two offensive and two defensive players around the ball. THIS is an optimum time to double the ball and eat another couple of seconds...AND in doing so potentially leaving the player without the ball completely open if "able " to receive a return pass.

Once again your on the money. They tried the pick and roll at Mich last season, just before half with Caleb and RayDay. We had a six point lead. Caleb ended up wide open but never got the ball. The subsequent turnovers (did it more than once) cost us the nice lead we had going into halftime. This years team seams to make those plays and are getting some results. I like it.

The kid missed the shot. It wasn't a great look but not terrible either. We got lucky.

we did get lucky in some degree, but I am completely lost in what you reference relative to the shot adn look in context of what I typed?

One other thing: You said Carsen missed his block out on the free throw. He didn't miss it, he had the shooter and blocked him out after the ball was released. You must be thinking about another free throw during the game.

Your nit-pikin. Not necessary.

he did have teh shooter or should have, but in my book...NO contact NO block out. I would never coach anyone to step forward in the defensive position. I can review again, but don't think I saw contact and if NOT, that isn't blocking out. On the offensive side I would tell players to break contact so you can go around which is the other side of just standing in the lane without contact. In fairness, I'll try to visit that again, but do not recall teh contact which is THE KEY. You could be correct IO don't know

The last shot that OSU missed. If that goes in then your entire narrative is different.
are you talking about Lyles shot in teh final second from way outside the three? Obviously there could be a lot of things that resulted in a different outcome. The intention and obviously missed was to state how coaches might play relative to a score, what happened adn why that may have happened relative to the playmaker, who got the ball and who defended the ball. My narrative rests on those thoughts not whether someone could have hit a last second shot. I thought the last 15 seconds by Purdue was not an accident adn attempted to list the reasoning why it may not be an accident. Who knows if Diop would have played what might have happened.

at 121:30 Carsen does NOT make contact. THAT would be a no no in my book. In fairness there is a line in how far do you go to block out, but a tipped ball, a long board and the 7 footer may get it with ease around the FT line. Without contact you really have no idea where that person is and what direction he may be going. A six footer with space between him and a long board or tip up for grabs with a 7 footer and a ref willing to let them play on "could" have spelled disaster. JMO, but it is a teaching moment...
