Gicarri Harris

I like the thinking…

I think by next year, we will have the 6’4 guard part taken care of with at least one player that is currently on the team.

The 6’7 option you provide, we would need that but not sure we will. IF we did tho, we can always hit the portal (highly unlikely but option is there).
Pretty high bar for someone to come in and supplant Braden, Fletch and Trey as the guy to go to when you need a bucket. Would be great if we had someone step up to that level.

I was thinking more of having someone who COULD do it if you need them to. Not saying take over those 3. This person would ideally complement them and have that ability, but not asked to always go do it.

I think you need a guy who you can run iso, break down his defeneder off the dribble, attack the rim and finish or get fouled. I don't think Smith, TKR or Fletch have that in their game.

Cox can get his own shot and to a lesser extent so can Harris. Neither is 6’7” however.

I doubt Painter goes looking for what basically is a replacement for Catchings. It’s more likely someone already on the roster fills that spot.

SWA I suppose is still a possibility.

Cox seems to be on the trajectory of what Carsen was like and can get his shot whenever and against anyone. SWA will not be that guy next year…he’s still a bit raw and not better than anyone we will have next year.

Haven't seen much of it from Colvin. If anything Heide has shown more of an ability to do that than Colvin.
GH and CJ haven't played a game yet.
Heide has shown little in getting his own shots and breaking people down off the dribble. Cox and Harris had it as part of their game coming in and can hopefully translate that to college level. It seems they’ve been fairly successful with it in practice, especially Cox. Myles has occasionally flashed his ability to get midrange jumpers but we need more from him. Believe it or not Fletch uses motion& picks as well as angles to attack the rim getting floaters and his sometimes unorthodox layups.

Smith can iso, but he works so well with ball screens that there is little reason not to leverage one.

TKR is great in isolation in the post.

Colvin has looked pretty good in his ability to get to his pull up but you're right across all of those guys, there's a lot yet to be seen.

I was thinking, if we could get a vintage Scotty Pippen replica for that wing role it would probably help us win a NC. Someone should call into the Painter radio show and give him a heads up.

Not sure I agree. How often did he make a move or drive the lane for a shot? I'd say 75%+ of his shots were either spot-up 3s or lobs/fast breaks.

Does he have that capability? Not sure, but we haven't seen it yet.
Seen some in footage tho.

pippen surely has a covid year left?!

I’ve seen it in clips and footage from this offseason. His role in the offense wasn’t to create or go get his own shot. Let’s see if he does more of that this year in a more perimeter oriented offense.

Paint just said smith is going to be in the most PnR situations in the country 😂
I’ve seen talk about Colvin in PnR situations as well so perhaps he has improved his handles? I think it was Painter who was talking about different players he wants to run that action for.

With his ability to get above the rim, maybe he's going to set the pick and roll?

I think Smith is crafty with the ball and has a sneaky ability to get some points in the paint. Much of that was probably due to Edey, we shall see.
But, if you're down 2 with 7 seconds left, that's probably not a spot where Smith can break a guy down and get his own shot. I like that 6'7 guy who can go around, through or over the defense to get that tough bucket.

How tall was Terrance Shannon?

Asking for a friend.

That's my question about Colvin. Good first step, explosive, etc, but does he have the confidence in his handles to drive and get to the rim or just to get to a pull up?

Didn't Smith kinda do that against Illinois?
(Which is maybe what choice beef was alluding to?)

If Purdue is down 2 with 7 seconds left, I want the ball in Smith’s hands without hesitation.

The original question was 'what need would Painter fill in the offseason next year".

But, Smith struggles with bigger, lock down man to man defenders. I'd rather not rely on a pull up jumper but have someone who can get to the rim.

Who did he struggle with that was lockdown?

I’ll take the guy who can score from all three levels off the dribble and is the best passer in the country as well as a great free throw shooter if he is fouled.

Tell me:

1. Another team that had a lockdown defender Smith struggled with

2. A team that didn’t struggle with UConn last year? (I know you’ll look at that Creighton game but I’d say that was more on an outlier)
If I recall correctly, (and I may not), he struggled with the defense of Northwestern and Rutgers.
But I'm also trying to think of what games over the last 2 years, we needed a bucket in the final 10 seconds to tie or win? I don't recall many.
And yes, everyone struggled with UConn, although didn't Bama put a good scare into them in the tourney?

I've grown to like Smith. Wasn't a fan of his recruitment but he proved me wrong. It will be really interesting to see him play without Edey.
