This should be a slam dunk but won't be. Last night Jack took away one of the biggest knocks against him. " Plays for a small school" Well he scored 35 of his teams 60 as they took down Carmel in OT. Carmel has 4000 plus students BCHS has 500. He is clearly the best player in Indiana he now must win a state championship to prove it! At 6'6" he is a match up nightmare at the HS level he is a big two guard, but he can play 1-4. He should enter Purdue as a top 10 all-time scorer in Indiana history. IMO he is the best of this class. He is your typical coach's kid he knows the entire game and how to use that to his advantage. Before the HS season started, I ranked Catchings ahead of him. Despite watching Kanon score 25 and grab 10 boards on Friday night. Jack just does more for me. IMO the pay to play league is hurting Kanon's college game while improving his NBA game. They play an individual's game vs a team concept. I feel strongly he (Catchings) will be an NBA player soon. While Jack will be a team leader for the long run. I watched one game each this week except for Cox. Best this week #1 Jack #2 Kanon #3 Raleigh, #4 Daneil, and Gicarri last only because they lost.

His problem as you know is playing for a 2A school. He will probably struggle at the college level as witnessed currently by Furst. These kids don’t see enough top competition in high school to prepare them for division one college. I guess that’s why the prep schools are so popular now.

Carmel is 4-9 this year. It’s just not a vintage year for them. Non the less a very good win for Brownstown.

How long has he been back from the injury? Definitely believe that Jack is the best HS player in IN this year. This is an absolutely loaded class imo. May not all really get to play together if KC is only at Purdue for a year or if one or more redshirt, but it's going to be a very productive class when all is said and done.

It was a high ankle sprain he missed 2 weeks I think 3 games two were in a tourney.

Furst played at Blackhawk, Yes they are 2A but they didn't play a 2A schedule when he went there. They played a lot of the big schools and big tournaments. While I agree he has not lived up to my hopes, I don't think it has anything to do with where he went to HS.

Yes, I know he missed the tournament in New Castle. I was there...got to see Flory play, but not Jack, in that one. On another note, the Attucks team looked really good, at least on that day.

Im excited to see him in Purdue uni next year. Will be curious to see if he can get his own shot in college or will be more of a 3pt specialist and see if he can keep shoter faster guards in front of him on switches.

Always fun to see which players catch on to D1 team defense the quickest. Hope at least a couple of these guys do, as they will be needed. One thing for sure all these players are offensively gifted.

Haven't seen the handle of the players in this class discussed much. In your opinion, which ones can dribble & handle the ball in D1 traffic??

Caleb was generally excellent as a freshman, there’s no arguing that he didn’t come to Purdue ready to play.

CJ Cox is exceptional, and Harris can be pretty good. Burgess is a good ball handler at 6'11, Benter and catching hang their hats more towards passing or scoring. I don't recall Jacobsen handling the ball much.

Benter and Brownstown aren't playing a 2A schedule either. They've already played Lawrence North, Brownsburg, Attucks, and Carmel...and Benter has had to miss some time during that stretch due to injury.

I still think Flory is going to be hard to beat. Went and watched him Friday night and they’re still calibrating the backboards and straightening the rims over at HHS.
On an uglier note, Kokomo is one of the dirtier teams I’ve seen play in quite awhile.
Their coach is a piece of work as well.

Benter has to have backboards recalibrated too…

Let's see:

Smith
Loyer
Heide
Colvin
Cox
Bentor
Harris
Catchings
Waddell

9 guys that can play the 1, 2 or 3. Three start and five play,

My guess. Smith, Loyer, Heide are probably locks. Waddel and Cox won't see the floor next year.

One might say either Heide or Cummings could play the 4 but then you have a lot of bodies at the 4 and 5.

TKR
Furst
Berg
Catchings/Heide
Burgess
Jacobson

2 start. 4 play.

If they choose to stay I believe Furst and TKR will get minutes. Jacobsen will RS. Berg has shown enough to get minutes.

My guess at an 8 man rotation:
Smith
Loyer
Heide
TKR
Furst
Berg
Catchings
Harris (over Colvin only because he can presumably play some point)

Fighting for 8 to 10 minutes per game 1 of the following 3
Colvin
Bentor
Burgess

I don't see how Cox, Waddell or Jacobson play in a game for Purdue next year unless two or three of the guys mentioned above transfer.

For one, we are overcommited by one, so somebody is either transferring or prep school for one of the freshman. Likely a transfer, maybe multiple.
Not saying that Jacobson won't redshirt, but I don't really understand a player reclassifing and then redshirting. He does need to work on strength, but he has a lot of talent. May depend on if Furst and TKR are both back.
I think Colvin gets more than 10 mins a game next yr, but may split some time with Harris and Heide both at the 3. Harris could play some 2 as well. Heide can play some 4. Benter could be in that 6-8 mins at the 2 or 3 if he doesn't RS.

Good breakdown.

I think we finally see transfers. After our guys getting so much national attention this year, nil poaching also a high possibility.

As long as it's NOT Smith as a transfer, Purdue will be fine. Better take care of him, NIL wise. As a guy originally from ARK, I worry. He is key to the team the next 2 1/2 years.

One would think that as Smith would be the new leader of the team that Purdue supporters would be able to step up and reward him. I think he has a chance to go down as the best pure point guard in Purdue history and I think that the Purdue fan base recognizes that.

I agree that someone will leave. The roster looks as deep as any Purdue roster that I can recall.

Send it in, Jack!

I think Smith is the team leader...now. Edey is the talent, but Smith is the guy leading, rallying and getting on guys. But sure next year, he is the guy.

From what I've seen, I agree. From the recruitment to comments made at signing and overcommitment, you can tell how badly Matt wanted Gicarri.
Harris was the 3rd dog Painter wanted. Coach was a little giddy describing his attributes. The short frontcourt lineup of Smith, Cox and Harris gives Painter that small lineup that will be fun to watch. I think this team can play a lot faster than us fans have experienced. Will the backcourt play a secondary role in the teams success?

I like your list but I think I don't see how it's not a nine man rotation if no one transfers.

Smith, Loyer, Heide, Trey and Caleb are locks to play. As you said, I guess Cam could play some 4, which would likely push Berg out of the rotation, but that seams like a stretch if Will keeps developing.

Colvin is going to play and Harris (unless he is beaten out by Cox) has to play as an additional ball handler. I agree with you that Catchings is very likely to be in the rotation at the 4.

You're worried that he'll transfer to Arkansas or just worried because he's not originally from Indiana? I'm not worried at all, MP is featuring him perfectly.

Yes, featuring him perfectly. That is without question. Not sure that is relevant to the NIL era though? In the NIL era, basketball teams having star all league players leaving, anything is possible. Heck Dickinson left, Love & Cryer left, etc. Odds are he's a Boiler for life.....But guess it's my nature to worry; have to work on that.

I understand your point. I think that fit and usage are relevant but agree that in the NIL era it's certainly not the only thing that matters. IMO there's a legitimate chance that Nijel Pack could have been an AA at Purdue last year and instead took the NIL deal and wasn't even honorable mention all ACC at Miami.

I think that Braden and his family recognize what they have at Purdue so I won't worry about it (in general my wife does enough worrying for both of us) but recognize your point that with NIL nothing is guaranteed.

Scoring 35 In high school is tough in itself, let alone vs a team that’s 10x the size of yours, regardless if they’re 4-9’or not.

But you’re right, the 2A competition may mean he’s not ready right away, probably will red shirt. But if only he played good competition like Leal (mr indiana bball) or cupps (Mr Ohio bball) 😂 but I’m pretty sure Jack has, at camps, aau and even this year too.

It’s tough to tell with high school players a lot of the time. Those two I mentioned are struggling. Leal hasn’t seen
the floor much in his time at IU and Cupps looks overmatched and more so a backup pg who should only play 10 min a game (although he should improve in the offseason, but he’s got a long way to go).

Agreed but he said "The college coaches are talking to my coaches about me right now". Maybe he meant in general and not necessarily Purdue coaches.

We got a little glimpse of what Caleb can do last game. More like what I've expected this year. I wish he'd hit that last little fade away in the closing minutes, he needs all the confidence he can get. That he and Mason and TKR AND Heide all seem to be getting better is very encouraging. I think we "could" bludgeon iu inside.

I hope. He pulled down a big boy rebound yesterday. Other than his offensive skill he has a LOT going for him. Certainly he can and should run the court putting offensive pressure on their 4 man or safeties should the ball bounce right and Braden or Lance push. Purdue has 3 very different 4s that in different ways put pressure on Reneau...and I'm not counting Ethan on Reneau since that isn't going to happen

I'm not sure I agree about the Jacobson redshirt. It makes perfect sense to me. Get an extra year of coaching by one of the best Big Man coaching staff or stay in high school. Probably sucks not playing a game for the year but as far as development, it's a no brainer.

Yeah totally agree on this take. Who knows if it’ll come true, but I feel that’s most reasonable.
