Coach Painter

So after reading through some of the posts on here, everyone I think makes valid points. I know... I know that really doesn't pick a "side" per se and I am not going to. I have my own perspective of this whole thing and there isn't anyone that is going to change it no matter what happens (that is more of a disclaimer than anything else).

First while I understand the whole working the refs thing, I just don't see it needing to be a focal point. Now when you list out the order of things that need addressed such as shooting, playing defense, etc. If we are relying on the ability to "work" an officiating crew, then we have bigger problems. Now, it did work for UM yesterday without a doubt, I just think the energy can be spent elsewhere FIRST.

The posts trying to place "blame" as it were I think are fruitless to an extent. First, Painter isn't going to be fired any time soon as long as he continues to do well in conference. That isn't "settling" that isn't giving up, that is just how things probably are going to be. It's just a reality for our sports program that we get a coach that does well in conference, shows promise and every once in a while does something in the tourney. And I think Painter gives us that however, if we exit first round this year, as I said when this season started I will be watching next season with much more scrutiny than I have previously. Another first round exit and I may start to waver on the side of replacement. It is one thing to be great in conference but to continually exit in round one without making changes, well that isn't going to get it done.

I do think though that CMP is changing his philosophy. You can kind of see that in the players he is now going after and the freedom CE has. With the rule changes a couple years ago, I think he was more or less forced in to it and that is okay. As far as playing zone goes, I'm indifferent as again that is low on the list of things we need to address first.

And finally, even though I am a CMP fan and supporter, he is the one paid to take the "blame" for this even if it isn't directly his fault. I say that based on my own experience as a manager in that I train and give my people the tools they need to succeed. From that point forward it is up to them to do their job to the best of their ability however, when they screw up, it is MY job to take the heat for it and then train them to do better next time. If they can't or consistently do what is needed, then I replace them with someone that can. But ultimately I am getting paid to take the blame whether it is directly my fault as I said or not and CMP or any leader for that matter, is no different. When your people screw up, it's on you to be the leader and take the abuse, even if things were out of your control.

Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread with a rant.

Good post BBG. Since I've been watching college basketball, the landscape has changed so much.......and so have my thoughts. I don't need national affirmation to tell me my team had a damn good year............but I wouldn't kick a NCAA Championship out of bed either LOL. It does sicken me to see the reactions on here when PU loses, throwing this outright Big Ten Champion under the bus, but that's the nature of things on this board I suppose. Either way, with whatever coach, I will always be rooting for the Boilers. BTW, didn't PU just end (2015?) a record number of consecutive first round wins in the tourney? Maybe it is the second round PU has trouble with! BTFU!!

Other than maybe not getting Cline and DM a couple set plays for open looks I don't see how this loss can possibly be put on him. He coached an above average game that put us in position for countless layups and close range shots and missed them along with lots of missed FT's. We adjusted on defense and Michigan shot very poorly the second half. Wagner was a non factor and Wilson was contained compared to what he did in the first half.

We lost this game pretty simply - free throws, but overall I think this one is on the players. We are one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country and we shot 46%.

We were up by 2 with 18 seconds left and one of our best free throw shooters missed a one-and-one.

And it's not to single anyone out, that situation with PJ hurt. But Isaac was 1-4 and someone missed another one-and-one - forget who (may have been Isaac).

Overall, we knew this is probably our worst match-up in the Big Ten. We were doing ok with it, but the fouls started piling up. Going into OT, we had a number of guys with 4 fouls, so it was only a matter of time.

I think every player had something to take away from this game. For example, it was so great to see Isaac back to his normal self, but at the same time he wasn't focused with his free throws. Going into this tournament, would have been great to go far - but I also wanted to see us challenged. They got to play against a good team that makes us "uncomfortable" with many match-ups. Hopefully at the end of the day, even though we lost, if we face a team like Michigan with some tall, athletic wing guys in the NCAA Tournament - we will be in a better position because of this.

I wouldn't compare the real coaches with the ones on here.
Oh God no, noooooooooooooooo comparison. Still, you have to understand that most are sincere and sometimes have an angle that truly has merit. As I said, when you stumble upon a few that go into a more descriptive approach, can tell you the pros and cons, the whys and why nots and is willing to actually go into depth and a willingness to actually discuss back and forth substance, I too enjoy those more than someone just going to the edge...just because. Purdue and Matt are not above criticism and those willing to state either for or against with some depth are always enjoyable.

What we have is too many picking sides on any issue and not really offering much in understanding. It is a public forum though and all want Purdue to do well.

*************
no rant at all. I just temper my thoughts in how far back Purdue was...who Purdue was able to recruit...where they are today and how all that was affected by rule changes and emphasis after they were recruited and th difference in playing games where you know the other teams better and know the players better (in conference) and the hand selected tourney pairings. Obviously, Purdue needs better exposure adn in my opinion Purdue needs much more athletic and better players with the right culture...which Matt has taken steps. You had no rant at all. You stated your thoughts and the reason why your thoughts in a substantive manner.

Didn't need to read any more than this to know the rest of your post was crap. It is up to the player and the player alone to execute on the court. Period.

Your comment makes me believe you have never played a team sport ever. I played baseball and when I missed an easy out or watched a strike come in and not swing, you know who's fault it was? Mine and mine alone. The coach teaches you and and gives you the tools to do what is needed on the field. Once you are out there it is up to you to perform and that is a fact.

This loss is on the players. End of story.
Perfect ....
