Looking forward to this game, will be very interesting. What are your thoughts in what Purdue needs to do to beat Rutgers on Sunday? Rutgers will come in with swagger and play tough. I think the key will be playing tough D and rebounding. They are not the best shooting team, so Purdue can't give them an opportunity to suddenly get hot for some reason, and also need to avoid turnovers leading to runouts. You can go into individual play too, by trying to get Mulcahy and Baker out of their comfort zone. I think Purdue matches up better with Omoruyi than most teams, but he seems to be be playing better and better these days. Harper is a big ? but Rutgers will be a tough whether he plays or not.

Limit TOs + Shoot Avg % on the season + show a pulse defending high ball screen and energy on D = Win.

We need to play a clean and focused game. We can’t give cheap points off of turnovers. I don’t think we need to play great defense. I just think we need to make them earn it.

Offensively, we need to just establish our big guys and hit some shots. Ivey needs to try and get an efficient 15, not try and overdo anything. If we shoot a decent percentage from 3 and FT, we put ourselves in a good position to win.

Rutgers played pretty aggressive man D in the first game. I think that some high pick and roll with Ivey might be effective against them. Regardless, I think Purdue needs to use their aggression against them.

On D, containing the dribble is key against them. Don’t let Geo or Harper (if healthy) beat you.

1. Defense, we need to play with intensity, but also not forget assignments. Rutgers will take contested 2's (And will hit them as well) but have to limit the easy baskets.
2. No 2nd chances, out rebound the hell out of them
3. Play our offense and limit turnovers, they are good defensively but we should be able to give them problems.
4 I know that Baker and Harper have given us issues, but Mulcahey (sp?) has come into his own recently, don't let him into the lane
5. Score more points and I don't are if we do all of the above. In the end winning and staying healthy is all that matters.

Just like every game we have an advantage because of our depth and we need to use it to be aggressive....

1) Get the other team in foul trouble because as they go to their bench, our guys do not drop off like most teams. So be aggressive and get their starters in foul trouble.

2) To point 1, do not settle for jump shots unless wide open and in the flow of the offense...be aggressive and go to the basket and make the free throw.

I think the key to this game is getting them in Foul Trouble, Purdue making Free Throws and Purdue hitting our open 3ptrs.......we should out rebound them with Gillis, Edey, Furst and Williams.

I see Purdue 78 Rutgers 71

Cheers.

Make your free throws. I think we missed 10-12 against them the first game. Sasha has to be able to hit wide open threes also. He struggled against Rutgers and has the last three out of four games

Feed the big boys and Have Ivey back to being Ivey and we win. Too simple, I know but those are the keys for me.
Ivey needs to do the highball screen where he gets the defender on his hip and takes it to the basket and possible and 1 situation. Or he feeds it back to the screener. That is his sweet spot.

Mulcalhany(?Sp) has been great for them last 5 games or so, runs the team, is BIG guard who can and does back his man down into the foul lane and they usually dishes, will be a matchup issue for us with our smallish points. I believe Ivey will have to guard him.

The key is simple. Make the first of all of our 1 and 1 ft opportunities. And play some actual 3 point perimeter defense! If we do just those 2. Things, we’d have 2 less losses

My key would be staying poised and staying the course through adversity. I think it will be difficult to get a good, clean looks early in the shot clock due to Rutgers athleticism. This can either frustrate you into risky behaviors and forcing bad shots.. or you stay the course and work together to get the the best shot you can each possession.

Set a faster pace and attack/punish them for attempting full-court pressure. Do not get into a slow-down tempo.

Purdue needs to do the same things they needed to do last year, this year, and next year, which is play the game the right way, not the opponent. All the little things add up to big things. Personally, I wouldn’t be sad to see Omoruyi get into some foul trouble. Kid is a very quick jumper and is always there for a lob by Mulcahy and sometimes Baker. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings to see that element not a factor and not sure how sound Rutgers is with his backup. Lot of interchangeability between the other four starters where losing one might not matter as much as losing Omoruyi, but that is an opinion that hasn’t seen a lot of Rutgers. Rutgers 4 other players will shoot behind the arc, but they seem to want to penetrate as a first priority and are willing to shoot a midrange jumper. It isn’t their O that concerns me so much, it is their D and how Purdue handles their D that I think is a key.

Their D against Illinois on the perimeter was outstanding…smothering if I recall correctly? The have GREAT length, strength, and will put pressure on the ball. They will play the passing lanes jumping Purdue’s ball reversals and try to go over the top I expect on handoffs…jamming the cuts “as much as they can”.

I don’t have a feel since they have length how they will play off ball screens where they could try to stay connected at least for Sasha and possibly go under on the others…or with all four ranging from 6’4” to 6’7” just switch everything. They are going to want Purdue going side to side under pressure and Purdue is going to need to get ball and player more vertical to be aggressive in countering their pressure and with their size on the perimeter and a quick jumper…getting pressure vertically may come from post feeds more than driving the ball…unless Zach and Tre wall up well for Eric, Sasha and Jaden…with Isaiah being too small for a floater I’m guessing.

Not going to stare down the posts with their length very often for a feed and Purdue rarely feeds the post off of a quick dribble and so it will mostly need to happen…at least early I expect with someone coming off a screen, getting that extra second due to a screen for a look inside and quick feed. The little thing that will be a big thing is the screener getting set with a “good angle”, feet slightly wider than shoulders and a solid base and the cutter setting his man up with a V step and bump and going shoulder to shoulder with the screener TIMED correctly to receive the ball…shade late rather than early so that the D doesn’t catch up with you after the screens.

Naturally, in transition and somewhat an open court…find Jaden “early” so he can get the ball while the D is backtracking. McConnell is going to be guarding Jaden outside of switches I suspect. I think Purdue takes the 3 ball in transition and suspect Purdue wouldn’t mind this being a lot of possessions. Purdue needs to play sound D, with good communication, focus and not getting sucked in too far on weak side and carry some pride in containing the dribble and blocking out physically.

I suspect the best D from Purdue will be found on the O end. Not throwing the ball away will go a long way towards making Rutgers play against a set D rather than some scores off turnovers and poor 3 ball choices that allow runouts. Horizontal passes stolen go for baskets whereas vertical passes stolen many times face a set or more set D and so a turnover feeding the post is usually less costly than a turnover passing to a wing. There is no guarantee the ball goes in like you want, but if Purdue can’t show fight, effort and intensity physically and mentally with a team that is 4 and 0 against them and an obstacle to winning the Big…then I’ll be shocked because I don’t expect that to happen.

We need to play with an edge on both sides of the floor, something we haven't had in some time, that Rutgers clearly has developed as of late.

The Boilers could definitely use some of the Edge.....

Their big guy had 14 rebounds last game, so we have to be on our toes. I am not amazed they are winning as I had them picked as one of the best in the big ten early, what does amaze me is, they are not deep at all and their 5 that start have really carried this ball club to several GREAT wins.

I recall in a previous game that we lost on a last second half court shot, that our defender was not in his face and just allowed him to heave it up, and he watched the ball go straight through the hoop. and we lost. While it was a miracle shot,, if our player had played any type of defense, the shot would never have been close. I see the same thing with track athletes who slow down 5 feet before the finish line. and by doing so, sometimes those athletes get nosed out by the other athlete who gives 150% until the final buzzer sounds. I've seen that a lot in Boilermaker games, where the other team keeps playing until the buzzer, but the boilermakers tend to be a bit lazy on defense in those last seconds before the half and at end of games. it's as if they go into a prevent defense mode which never works.

Morten was there but he wasn’t trying to foul on a half court heave of a prayer. Fouling in that scenario would be a horrible decision.

Rutgers played more guys early in the season, but they didn't defend well enough to remain in the rotation. Some have slowly returned to the rotation as they showed improvement. Jaden Jones (6'8 guard/wing) can shoot with deep range but was dropped from the rotation because he wasn't committed to playing defense. He is a freshman and might be the best 3pt shooter on the team, but Pike doesn't care if you're not committed to playing defense. Mawot Mag is a defensive specialist who scored 12 pts against you guys in the first game. He has seen minutes impacted by a facial injury. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get more minutes for this game because of his success in the first one. He's 6'8 and can guard 1 through 4. Aundre Hyatt is a 6'6 LSU transfer who would probably be a starter if not for Ron Harper Jr. Hyatt is stuck behind Harper, but if Harper's injury becomes a problem, he is likely to replace RHJ. Hyatt is nowhere near as good as Harper, but he's a guy who could average 9pts/7boards if he played 25 minutes a game. The back center is Dean Reiber, who has seen his minutes increase as the season goes. He doesn't have the size or strength of Cliff Omoruyi but is a 3pt threat. If Reiber plays more than 10 minutes, then that means Omoruyi is in foul trouble. When Reiber is in the game, Geo Baker and Harper will attack the basket because Reiber will draw the opposing center out to the 3pt line opening up the lane. This is when Rutgers starts the parade to the FT line. True frosh PG Jalen Miller will come in for about 5 minutes a game just to frustrate the opposing team's main ballhandler with fullcourt pressure. Coach Pike said Miller has greater potential than former Rutgers G Jacob Young (of last year and currently with Oregon Ducks) in disrupting teams from getting into their offense. Rutgers will play up to 9 guys, but the starters are likely to at least 30 minutes.

You can't afford a foul there. He had 2 guys on him but he was able to maneuver around them to get the shot off. Kid made a miracle shot. No fault of Purdue's.

holy cow... the fact that there is a thread in which we're analyzing the defense on a half-court prayer perfectly illustrates the periodic dysfunction of this forum ... not to mention an absence of a fundamental understanding of what you should (and absolutely should NOT) do in a situation like that.
