Purdue v. Pittsburgh Game Thread

Pitt is doing an amazing job at preventing the ball from entering the post. That cannot continue to happen. Our shooters are not good enough right now.

What is Stephens the last three games from deep...2-17? Good lord.

Stephens also doing an amazing job of preventing the from entering the post.

Lets see if Painter can make the 2nd half adjustments to break the zone...bigs have to keep it high when they get the inbound pass. Edwards and swanigan need to drive to collapse the zone. BTFU

I wondered if it was just me, incredible that they let H and H get hammered down low! However, if KS just shoots 20% we'd be up by double digits, so . . . . . .

Purdue is in big, big trouble. Nobody can attack the D off of the dribble, and we can't get it into the high post in order to feed Hammons and Haas.

Hopefully Painter can find a way to make adjustments. Games like these are where you make your money, Matt.

This team misses an Octeus-type, who could get into the lane and break down the defense...or even a Ray Davis.

Not good.

Game changed with Painter's massive substitution and going small against zone. Cline and Stephens can't play D. Only reason on the floor is to hit 3s. Once they proved they couldn't Pitt just collapsed inside. Add that to refs allowing Pitt to mug Haas and AJ and our offense is toast. Why Dakota sat so long while Stephens bricked I don't understand.

How many blocks do they have............not one foul, smh

4 blocks, 6 fouls....Purdue 0 blocks, 9 fouls....Purdue seemed to get away from what was working and as others have stated just didn't finish. That 19-5 run for Pitt was a little like Ohio Sate and Michigan State last year. CMP needs some to step up.....this is where you miss Ray Davis. All that, and Boilers are still leading.....before the game many would take that.

Mathis sat bc he had 2 fouls...same with edwards. Lets get after in the 2nd half! Pitt relies on 2 guys, lets shut down young in the 2nd half...BTFU

I don't know about that. We've gotten plenty of good looks down low and Hammons/Haas are not finishing. Hammons is playing like he did at MSU last year. Like he's a freshman.

Hammons and Haas haven't had many clean looks at all, outside of the first 8 minutes. Off of rebounds they've had a few in traffic, but those have all been contested, or they were hacked, and it wasn't called.

This is why KS gets so much criticism. Some on here try to defend him, he is absolutely killing us. Pitt is begging him to shoot and he can't hit an open 3.

The bench needs shortened.

when that phantom call went against dakota i knew what was going to happen. we just have to be stronger and fight through the contact. we can grind with anyone.

My thoughts:
How many times did Hammons and Haas get stripped or blocked inside? How many have they blocked? The bigs need to turn up the intensity. Biggie needs the ball in the high post against the 2-3 for some high-low. The shooters need to shoot off of inside out passes.

That's the thing...they can't get it to Biggie in the high post right now. Pitt is closing that off, and Purdue isn't making them pay by bricking all of its threes.

2-19 from deep in last 3 games. Maybe that green light needs to switch to yellow.

The problem is they hesitate - which allows the defense to collapse. There was one Hammons could have gone straight up to dunk, but hesitated and it was a missed shot as the defense collapsed.

One problem in terms of the fouls is that Hammons tends to shy away from contact - so when even he is getting fouled he's trying to get away from the contact, which doesn't look like much of a foul.

Complete BS the way they are calling this game. Our bigs are getting pushed around on one end and called for fouls on the other.

Swanigan's man (Young?) keeps setting screens on PJ and forcing the switch. PJ has done a great job after the switch, but we cannot keep letting that happen! It's too much of a mismatch!

wow, I thought they were going to stop targeting Haas

Complain all you want about the refs, Pitt's inside play is aggressive on the offensive end and ours is timid.

If we don't draw contact, we won't get fouls.

Does this account for every play of this game? No. But for the most part, we are not playing with confidence in the paint.
