I get a kick out of the idea that Purdue will have 5 of the top 25 "all-time" recruits playing next year and a sixth will join them the following year. According to 247, here is the list of the all-time 25 best Purdue recruits, in order of ranking. This list is obviously according to their own rating system and obviously does not go back to before they began rating players.

  • Caleb Swanigan
  • E’Twaun Moore
  • Trey Kaufman
  • JaJuan Johnson
  • Scott Martin
  • Caleb Furst
  • Robbie Hummel
  • Kendall Stephens
  • AJ Hammons
  • Terone Johnson
  • Nojel Eastern
  • Jaden Ivey
  • Ronnie Johnson
  • Rapheal Davis
  • Isaac Haas
  • Ethan Morton
  • DJ Byrd
  • Ryne Smith
  • Jay Simpson
  • Keaton Grant
  • Bryson Scott
  • Lewis Jackson
  • Xavier Price
  • Fletcher Loyer
  • Brandon Newman
Besides several of the lower rated players proving to be better than higher rated players, I can immediately think of at least 3 glaring misses in this list since the Baby Boilers came to Purdue.

An interesting list certainly...for sure a couple of guys missing it would seem, and, some surprises as well as to a couple that appear. Just shows how subjective it can be, and, how inaccurate rankings are at times also.

Yeah, but even the worst of these were okay players. Nojel, ronnie, bryson scott, youd take these guys, just they were overrated. Ronnie and Bryson could have been prettt good had they stayed.

Not gonna drag players by name but I think there's just one on there IMO who didn't come close to their potential (injuries notwithstanding)

I agree. Almost every player on there was highly rated by other services, so it's hard to knock their rating. But it does expose the rating system as being far from 100% reliable. Especially when you look at some of the names on this list and you don't see Carsen Edwards, Vince Edwards, and Trevion Williams.

In case you are wondering, here's the top recruits since the Baby Boilers according Rivals along with their corresponding ranking. I usually like Rivals take on Purdue recruits better than 247. I decided to go up to 30 instead of 25.

I agree with your take, Rivals > 247.

7 of the players on your list will be on the court this next season. :)

I assumed those were the 3 that you were referring to...I would argue Mathias should have appeared as well.

Player rankings give you a "probability" of success on individual success. They certainly are not perfect individually.

However, IF your team has a above average coach, there is NO doubt that the higher the rankings of your team's top 5 guys the greater your team's success.

There have been a bad coach or 2 screw this up (iu). But it holds true for excellent coaches like Painter, Izzo, Holtman, Beilien, Matta in the B10. And even slightly above average coaches like Underwood and coaches the jury still is out on like Howard.

The thing that jumps out to me about this list is that the players at the very top were very successful, but after the top 7 it is hard to see a correlation between place on the list and college success.

The top 7 consists of two incoming recruits, Swanigan, and the Baby Boilers. If Kaufman and Furst turn out to be as good as Swanigan and the Baby Boilers that bodes very well for the future and they likely will have a big impact as freshmen. With all the returning talent that Purdue has, as well, it should be a fun year to be a Boiler fan.

I don't understand the point here. The rankings are just predictions based on analysis of players in AAU and High School, They are never going to be perfect.

Do people think Painter gave guys on this list that didn't pan out scholarships just because they were rated high by 247? I doubt it. I'm pretty sure he recruited the guys because he thought they could have an impact. So even our beloved coach Painter is wrong sometimes.

Heck there is general disagreement on this board on how good players will become at Purdue after watching them play college ball for a year or two. Go back and read some of the posts that predicted both Eastern and Wheeler were going to leave early for the NBA. Look and see how many folks thought Taylor was going to be a major contributor after his Jr year. Some thought Haarms was going to develop into a star. Fans on this board are making these predictions after watching our own guys play 30 to 60 games in college. Sometimes we're right sometimes we're wrong. Painter himself even has said he was surprised at how good Edey was when he got to campus.

So of course its not an exact science.

You do understand the point. You restated it at the end of your first paragraph and then again at the end of your post.

I like the rankings/results of our players, immediately after leaving Purdue. Steve Scheffler would make the top 25 list, & Russel Cross as well, & Todd Mitchell, Troy Lewis, Glenn Robinson, ect., ect...

I do see us/CMP/Purdue getting a lot more of those 'top recruits' in the years to come.
