Nice article at: http://il.8to18.com/evanston/scoreresultdetail?eventid=65247

Starts with.... "Nojel Eastern will finish his high school basketball career as the only player in Evanston’s history to rack up more than 1,300 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists."

4 year starter......who likes to help the team win. LIKE everything I read about his attitude this year. Only slightly negative I have read on him is apparently scoring comes and goes, and FT% could be better for a PG.

All things that can be improved OR can get better when he isn't the best player on the floor. If his scoring comes and goes, fine with me...as long as it goes when CBoogie, Mathias, Vince, Cline, Haas, etc etc etc, start scoring in response!

For those who have seen a lot of him, what are his handles like? On a scale of 1 (Cline) -10 (LewJack).

He should of went with Ryne Smith as the 1
Could have. I wanted to use guards on the current roster for reference but couldn't figure out who the 10 would be.
But if Eastern is an 8 on my scale, that's pretty darn good for a tall guard.

If you're picking someone from the current roster, the 10 would be Carsen Edwards, IMO.

Eight was also the first number that popped into my head.

I've seen him play once in person and going to see him play tomorrow night, a very unselfish player that likes to get everyone involved, could easily average 30 a game but plays team basketball.

Since you've seen him in person, is he a legit 6'6"? Just curious.

A season or two in PU's training program and he will have a chance to be a beast. From what I have seen, he is already very quick with the ball in his hands. When he goes left from the top of the key s to the rim with ease.

If you watch some highlight videos, he shoots left handed but can attack the rim with both hands and prefers his 'floaters' with the right hand when getting in the lane. That is unique.

So glad to hear that... I've been missing the floater since RJ left.
The big difference is that Eastern is 6'6 while RJ was maybe 5'10. That 8 inch difference means a lot more when shooting the floater. Vince has a pretty good floater in the lane and I am sure Eastern will get to the rim much more as his body fills out.

Video above=How NOT to do a PG video ..... I think I saw 1 pass in the whole video....

Lots of basketball skill though on display...glad he is a Boiler.

I have long thought that he looks much more like a more athletic Dakota Mathias. If you pair Eastern, Carsen, and Mathias along with Vince...that puts four really good ball handlers together along with four guys who have shown an ability to attack the basket. I think that pairing along with putting Haarms/Ewing in is likely the lineup when Haas comes out for a breather.

I think Eastern is much more a combo guard like Carsen..but pairing them together gives CMP a lot of flexibility on both the offensive and defensive side.

Flexible and should work well together -- while Eastern can score, he has pass first tendencies......where as Carsen tendencies are shoot first, second & third it seems.

I do like the flexibility of Eastern's size that he presents on D.

If he can buy in and pick up the defensive concepts as much as Carsen has done this year (that has probably been the biggest factor in Carsen's starting and continued improvement this season), Eastern could cause a lot of problems for opposing teams on the defensive side. Although he isn't an elite rebounder like Biggie, his length could serve an ability for him to pull down 4-6 rebounds per game. If he can do that, that would probably go a long way in replacing what Purdue will be missing with Biggie next season.

Don't forget another years worth of development for PJ and Cline. 9...oops 10 more wins (I forgot about NW ) and I can start thinking about it, a lot.

Curious to see how that all comes together. Much more depth but only 44 mpg to replace with Biggie and Spike leaving. Got to think none of the "core 6" mpg will be reduced, CE may go up.

He's listed anywhere from 6'5 to 6'7 (doubt he's the latter height).

Didn't Everette Stephens go to the same HS that Eastern attends? Some of those program records that NE broke might have been ES'.

Yes, Nage...don't know about the previous record-holders.

Your spot on . The kid takes what you give him . A so called insider messaged me and sent me a link to a game he scored 6 points in he claimed it was his best game of the year . He didn't do anything special I seen other than he didn't force anything . The kid also has put his team first rather than pad the stat sheet which may cost him Mr BB . His actual height was measured at 6'7 in shoe's just over 6'6 in socks . Purdue will list him at 6'7 . After I watched him score 18 points in 3 minutes against the now # 5 team in the USA my concerns on his scoring ability are non existent . What I think most people miss on him is his ability to use his height to see over smaller guards . IMO his biggest flaw is fouling he commits at least 2 stupid fouls in almost every game ( reaches ) . IMO he will benefit from PJ being a senior and will learn from him at an accelerated rate . Enjoy the game I haven't found a webcast for it . But it wouldn't matter I'm going to watch Rob Phinisee tonight at Lafayette jeff vs Kokomo .

OB, are you local? I too am thinking of going to the game tonight but may hold off in the hopes of seeing Phinisee vs. Thompson in the sectional final. Thompson took over the game Tuesday against my Raiders and scored 30+.

Thanks for the detail on him, much appreciated. Very glad to hear he is legit on the height. Many times HS kids (and college) get exaggerated. Love the idea of having a big guard to go with CE. Should be a fun backcourt to watch.

Thanks for your insight! Do you think Phinisee is worth offering or would adding him create such a short backcourt in 2018-2019 (CE and Phinisee anyway: Cline, Stefanovic, and Eastern help in the height/length department) that it might hinder that Boilers team more than it would help them?

From what I am hearing, Phinisee is a Butler lean right now and a lot of that has to do with Edwards/Eastern being at Purdue and Thompson probably a lock for Purdue when he gets there. The coaches I know say that Isaiah Thompson is better than PJT right now. Phinisee is good but Thompson is the better player.

I'm very cautious about "slam dunk" recruits that are relatives of Boilers (or former Boilers). But, Isaiah Thompson is a h*lluva lot better than his brother at this point in his career.

We offered him last year . Your point on height is valid IMO if you have a shot to sign talent you do just that . I have backed off on touting Rob because I can't be objective . But when you see some of the best coaches in the world and Crean at his games it tells you something .

Anyone see the tweet of the cross court bounce pass he made? Maybe this has been posted before and I'm just late to it but that's insane

Hey, Purdue got what appears to be another great kid and damn fine ballplayer. It was a great pass, especially when so many can't even pass. Some of us got spoiled on the Pistol where this was routine, but good to see the vision, anticipation and execution in a split second! :)
