"From a mentality standpoint as a football team, we have to be a more aggressive, physical, attacking offense, defense and special teams football team," Hazell said. "Probably 25 of those have that in their blood, so it's good to bring it in and not have to always try to manufacture it."

If hes calling out 70% of the team for playing soft, can we finally make the distinction between effort and athletic capacity on this board?

Question:

Are we generally whiffing on first and second choice recruits? If not, it wouldnt shock me if Hazell recruited attitude/work ethic over physical talent.

In the end, it feels like a flawed strategy to me. I see potential there, but I dont think its a substitue for competing with other p5 schools more regularly. More balance is needed. Sort of like the Hope/Oline strategy. He talked about building a more aggressive oline through second tier dlinemen. If you think there is value there, then sure, burn some schollies on it. Putting all of ones eggs into that basket was too drastic.

Well, we are dealing with one of the worst coaches in Purdue history....that "flawed strategy" probably makes sense to him.

2013-14 darrell hazell 4-20 (0.16667)
1921 William H. "Lone Star" Dietz 1-6 (0.14286)
1907 Leigh C. Turner 0-5 (.00000)
1906 Myron E. Witham 0-5 (.00000

I read "coach" hazells interview....this guy is the biggest BS'er I've ever heard...it's become apparent how he got the job.

How do you think Boise State won all their games??? You think it was talent? Hell no it was a bit of talent but all effort. They worked their butts off. Effort is a huge huge part of it

Boise gets to play cup cakes week in and out

Undefeated 2009 Big Win Oregon (first game of the season finished 11 in AP/Coaches) Fiesta Bowl (TCU #4) Best Year by far for them

2010 Vtech (first game of the season, finished 15/16) and Utah Maaco Bowl (Utah ranked 23 in coaches poll)

2011 Georgia (first game of the season, finished 19/20) and Maaco Bowl (ASU unranked)

2012 No Major Wins Maaco Bowl (Washington unranked)

2014 No Major season wins, Fiesta Bowl ( Arizona 17/19)

So basically they play MAC level schools and in 2009-2011. I mean if danny hope didn't drop eggs against complete shit teams he would have been as competitive as BSU is.

Boise has been praised repeatedly over the years for recruiting far better than the teams they normally play, mainly in California. They are also a good example of what gimmicks and cool unis can do for you.

so yes, I do think it was mainly talent. You certainly need to cultivate a good locker room work ethic, but thats the function of many things, and Im not comfortable blaming that all on the current players. Relationship with coaches, ability of a scheme to take pressure off of guys, etc. affects how much guys believe.

Not really. A number of some highly intelligent (football) minds went after him.

He's going to get another season (or two), in spite of some of the experts on this forum.

17, who has been praising Boise's recruiting? From 03-10 their Rivals ranking averaged around 75. They've stepped it up over the last 4 years to achieve an average rank of 60. Are you thinking of some other team?

Two things Pub. One, Im getting a little older than I realize and used to watch Boise State games quasi regularly from 06-08 or so when their teams were pretty decent. I wasnt fully appreciating how long ago that is now when I wrote that yesterday. Not that it completely changes my stance, just that its been a little while and I think one has to discredit their memory a little around the 8 year mark.

Two, and more to the bolded, it was anytime I watched them on TV. I dont follow recruiting on its own so I was glad you posted that stuff. The sportscasters were always praising them and showing maps of where their recruits came from along with snipits of of the stadium/facilities and praising Boise for producing a good team in a location like Idaho.

Certainly sometimes those announcer pieces are complete fluff, but sometimes I find them insightful and I was always impressed with those Boise pieces.

I think its also worth mentioning they are competing with non p5 schools so if you adjust their rankings upward are towards the top of that list.

Question:
He wasn't calling-out 70% of the team. He was speaking specifically about the new class of 25 he just signed.

I like what he is doing, you can see we are getting physically bigger. Coaching effort is not an easy thing to do, Painter struggled with that and had no success. You also can't coach someone to be actually bigger and stronger than they are. Small, fast guys will give you effort, but ultimately, they are still small and are more prone to getting wore down.

Hazell seems to have a clear plan and vision for this team, to me, that is a far cry from what Hope did which was just bring in underrated, undersized athletes and hope they find a spot.

Adjust there class rankings upward?

Now your really losing me with regards to Boise. You would adjust there class rank upwards because they didn't recruit against p5 schools? If my 52 y/o brain serves me, seems I remember announcers praising Boise for getting kids outta Calf. that the big boys didn't want, finding some gems, and then molding them into some good teams, which is kinda what the other poster mentioned. I don't think they were known for winning with 4*-5* recruits. I also find it amusing that people discredit there schedule and there big wins over the p5 schools because it was the 1st game of the year. Hell, nobody wanted to play them! Plus, they were beating these teams on the road! And I did notice that the poster that knocked their schedule did leave out Boise's little bowl victory over OU!

Re: Adjust there class rankings upward?

Boise has been blessed with very good coaches first of all! They have great schemes that are hard to prepare for(Just like we had in the Tiller early days)!!!! They have been able to get good talent and have been able to coach up that talent, unlike we have been able to do so far. Hence the record and the less than 30K ave attendance for the past 2 years..............

Re: Adjust there class rankings upward?

Pub, you could be right, but I dont think Boise won most of those p5 ooc games. The OU game was one of the most fun games Ive ever seen.

Im saying that Boise rankings need to be compared against their peers; non p5 schools.

Not trying to present myself as an expert.

Nonconfrontationally, how was he not? Talking about not having to 'manufacture' player effort/toughness like that means he does have to convince the other 70% to try. Its pretty clear to me this is what Hazell has been dancing around since 2013 fell apart when people ask him what the team is missing.

Yeah, I went back in and edited this quote because I felt like people were misinterpreting it.

He was, in my opinion, talking about the 25 guys in the class bringing those characteristics.

Kyle, can you please link or post the ammended quote? I dont seem to see the article anymore.

In general, I heed to your and Stacey's judgement since you were there.

I can see how the 'always having to manufacture effort/whatever you want to call it' wasnt necessairly a contrast to the current team members. Totally didnt read like that to me first time around.

Those could be boiler plate statements, but hes declined to identify what he thinks is really the problem before. Pretty hard for me to not connect the problem as he sees it to the thing he talks about most.

I do think hes made traction in that department... at times...
