Big Ten Player of the Year- 2 Man Race

You guys realize that this guy is just playing, right? He is seeing how long he can keep you guys chasing the little laser dot on the carpet. Pick when and who you respond to, and stop wasting time on this idiot.
It doesn’t bother me. My hope is that one night, he looks in the mirror and asks himself if having no integrity bothers him. It probably doesn’t, but the monkey is still stuck in the cage….

We’re learning that iu fans don’t pay their bets. It’s not surprising, but is an explanation for some our problems in society.
WHAT??!! I will DIE without his top 25 list...

It's okay. You'll be okay.
You won't be. When Tracy Davis gets washed in the POY vote, IU finishes 4th in the B1G and loses early in the tourney, you won't be ok.

You're so desperate for some sort of validation for your mid center that you immediately run to this board any time Purdue stumbles.

That could happen. That'll be okay.

B1G stats

Edey: 22.6 points, 13.40 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 2.6 blocks, 3.1 turnovers

TJD: 21.8 points, 13.43 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.3 blocks, 2.4 turnovers

Indiana keeps it within 2 games... TJD has a case.

There isn't. The race is for 2nd.
Both Zach Edey and Trayce Jackson Davis are having extraordinary years. They are both legitimate candidates for CPOY and NPOY.

A one person race can longer be stated as a given because of statistical output--The numbers are pretty much identical; in conference play Trayce has better numbers in four of five stats and one of two key (points and rebounds) stats, for the entire season Edey has better numbers in the two key stats and Trayce is better in the other three (assists, blocks, and lower turnovers).

It's no longer because Edey is on an extraordinarily more successful team. The media votes on these things and they are noting a change. Here are Katz's current national power rankings. I am assuming that he is a media rep that will vote on at least CPOY:

1. Houston (2): The Cougars are atop my power rankings and deservedly so after holding serve in the American.

2. Alabama (4): The Tide beat rival Auburn and are still undefeated in the SEC.

3. Purdue (1): The Boilermakers drop down after falling at Northwestern.

4. UCLA (9): The Bruins got a sweep in Oregon and are the clear favorite to win the Pac-12.

5. Indiana (8): The Hoosiers followed up the Purdue win by beating Rutgers and winning at Michigan.

6. Texas (5): The Longhorns are currently atop the loaded Big 12.

7. Virginia (22): Controversy aside, the Cavaliers appear to be the best in the ACC — for now.

8. Baylor (10): Look out for the Bears, who are storming back in the Big 12.

9. Marquette (13): Shaka Smart is the Big East coach of the year.

10. Miami (30): The Hurricanes are playing their best basketball at the right time.

I'm not going to argue with you that the race has tightened between Edey and Davis. But using a poll by Katz that has IU 5th in the country doesn't help your argument. Nobody but Katz would have IU that high in a poll right now.

Good point - Katz does irrationally love IU. So does Jeff Goodman.

Bardo loves Purdue (and Illinois) just as much - he left Jalen Hood-Schifino off of his pre-season all B1G freshman team.

The gap between Edey and TJD is equal to the gap between number two, Jalen Pickett and number 23.

TJD will be runner up in BTPOY and somewhere in the top 5 for NPOY

There you have it. There is a ton of data that could be added, but here are the most accepted stat categories with the names anonymized for four primary B1G CPOY candidates.

There's more to it than stats. Edey is frequently triple teamed, gets fouled more than anyone in the country (and a vast majority are not called) and is the only player who has been the frontrunner since week 1.

Yea... I mean he's never getting triple teamed.. doubled yes and folded against it down the stretch against Northwestern. Wanna know who else gets doubled? TJD. Wanna know who else fights through no calls? TJD. Part of the game. Get over it. Every team has to center their game plans around Edey and TJD.

But to those arguments there are valid counterpoints:

1) Edey is frequently triple teamed he should have a ton of assists.
  • If he's "frequently triple teamed" that means two opposing defenders are guarding four Purdue players, and he should have fewer points and an unbelievable assist to turnover ratio. Instead, he has a low number of assists and a lousy assist to turnover ratio.
2) A vast majority of fouls against Edey aren't called?
  • Currently Purdue has the #1 Overall free throw advantage for the conference at +7.1. The closest is Iowa at +4.1. IU is at -1.8.
  • Purdue is second in free throws attempted, behind only Iowa, at 516. IU has 444, 72 less. Purdue shoots about 5.5 more free throws more than IU per conference game.
  • Finally, this narrative that Edey doesn't get calls is largely in the minds of Purdue fans, and maybe Stephen Bardo. EVERY fan base thinks their star should be getting more calls. Not something that bothers me to hear, but it's just as laughable as when IU fans gripe about Edey 'constantly pushing and elbowing'; "Why does Edey get all the breaks just because he's big?" (that's not true either)
3) Pre-season frontrunner? Yes, at the date the conference schedule started - TJD was injured and didn't play at the end of the non-con season. And yes, Edey has more than lived up to billing once conference play started. But pre-season? Trayce was B1G pre-season player of the year.

So, this isn't a downplaying of Edey as CPOY - he's worthy. But so is TJD.

ppg Edey
fg% Edey
ft% Edey

Wins Edey
Zach is 20. TJD is 2 years older. Zach has all the upside.
Everything else is little brother crying for attention by cherry picking.
Yes, Zach Edey is two years younger. Why does that matter even a little bit? Trayce stayed in school and is a senior.

Like I said, there are many other stats that can be cited for either player. Rebounds are dead even btw. Also, there are other elements -- Ability to handle the ball and press-break anyone?

Also - strength of schedule in conference? Trayce will play a total of four games against the bottom four teams in the B1G. Zach Edey has already played seven games against that bottom four.

You're not watching. He was triple teamed 5 times against Northwestern.
Agreed, and also double teamed a whole bunch.

Yet he only had two assists and had six turnovers. If he's getting triple-teamed his turnovers should be high, but his assists should be even higher.

LOL, yeah we want our 7'4" center breaking the press.

Which goes back to him getting fouled 100 times every game with only a handful being called.
Just once I wish he would come out like Godzilla and just wreck everyone with elbows and knees and feet. It would be worth the ejection to send a message.
