Another Guard…

You are joking right? Until Purdue wins a few national championships they won't be recruiting at that level.
And, if you're paying attention to what Painter says, even if we DO wen a few NCs, Painter has his recruits he's going after.

Would those results open up more relationships with players like Ivey? Probably. Would Painter take them? Not sure. Judging by the comments he's made publicly, THEY need to be a fit.

Yeah I like how he doesn't take guys just because they are good. Has to fit. Don't need any of that drama crap.

I'm not sure why this is even a discussion, then I realized it was from Lenny. He's about as off base when it comes to basketball that you can get. Then when you call him on it, he just moves the goal posts. Nothing new for him, he's a decent guy, but basketball he does not "know".

Painter has said before that he never will go through another Ronnie Johnson situation. We almost had it with Eastern , wit his mom anyway, but that got purged.

And Painter has exactly who needs now and for the near future both on the team, recruited and being recruited. How do I know this is a formula for success? Because we're ranked #1.

I forgot where I read it, but someone posted that there are those on here that aren't happy unless they are complaining and that is lenny. If we had every recruit he thinks we should have, he'd complain about the color of the uniforms and how certain ones lead to National Titles.

And @bonefish1 I don't mean to pick on you, you sorta opened the door to this yourself. I'd still buy you a beer though.

You seem to be very convinced about what should happen and you, more than anyone, knows exactly the qualities of the player you require. Looks like a great project for you. Find that player that fits all of your criteria and bring them on board for the 2nd semester. A scholarship is available. The best part for you is it may put IT on the bench.

No more harping and carping and whining. It's all within your power. We will be watching. All of Boiler Nation is counting on you. DON'T FAIL US!
Colvin is that guy. He'll be here in two years. Until then, gonna have to reach into the portal.

Pssst. Nobody gives a shit about your hypothetical. How many teams in the country have a good answer for "what would you do in the last 10 seconds without your best player"? Verrrry few so who cares? We have another all american candidate who can get his own shot or pass out of a double. We have several good to very good shooters, and we have a 7'4 guy that we can lob it up to. That's better options that pretty much every other team. Which is why we are #1 at the moment. And let's face it, if we had Ivey Jr on the team you would just say "well what if Jaden 1 fouls out and Jaden 2 hurts his ankle" or whatever other nonsense hypotheticals you can come up with.
Trust me, every single team in the country, at every level, works on 5 and 10 second end of the game plays. You probably didn't play organized ball which is why you don't know that.

Buzzer beaters are somewhat rare to begin with. But Purdue has made their share, including Williams at MSU and Ivey at OSU. Point is there is more than one way to skin the cat, not just hero ball.
Rare? Really? Our E8 run 2 years ago had back to back buzzer beaters in the S16 vs TN and E8 vs VA.

I don't subscribe to the belief that Purdue has any inherent disadvantages in recruiting. Painter should be able to pull in Top 10 classes somewhat consistently

I've got thick skin, it doesn't bother me if someone disagrees. It makes for more interesting discussion than if we were all stroking each other.

This has been explained to you countless times. It amazes me that you still don't see it and I know you're better than what your coming off as right now.

I think your reason was because Purdue isn't near a beach, right?

No, but nice effort. I'd rehash it again but if you aren't getting it by now, you never will.
Oh wait....that's right. It's because it gets cold in the winter and good players only want to play for schools in the south where the weather is nicer?

Keep digging the hole. You're doing wonders for yourself. For someone claiming earlier you have thick skin, you sure do have thin skin when called out on things. You've been hanging on to your hurt feelings for what, 5 years now? Get over it man.

Will Wade typically has higher rated recruiting classes than CMP. Would you say he’s a better recruiter than CMP?

By definition, a higher recruiting class and getting guys with higher rankings would mean someone's a better recruiter. That's different than coaching Xs and Os.
The argument could certainly be made that Painter maximizes the talent he gets, but if that's the case, how much more successful would he be with better talent? (and as I've stated, I think Painter has done a much better recruiting job the last 4 years).

Serious question: If you could trade Purdue’s point guards (IT, Hunter, and Morton) for IU’s (X Johnson, Phinisee, and Lander), would you do it? Johnson was a high profile transfer and is the kind of player who could blow through the defense in your full court scenario. Lander was a borderline 5 star and is exceptionally quick with the ball. Phinisee was a solid 4 star recruit.

I absolutely would not take that trade because the Purdue guys are a better fit for Purdue.

So is Will Wade a better recruiter than Matt Painter? Yes or no?

Can't answer that question because you don't know how Painter would utilize them.
I didn't want Phinesee when he was being recruited. Lander has obviously been a disappointment.
X Johnson I do like. Next to Ivey, he'd be our most athletic guard and I'd take him over our 3.

Some here are speculating Landers may enter the portal. He considered it after last season. Would anyone here use a scholarship to get him? Lenny, here's your 5-star, dropped right in your lap. Rated much higher than Ivey was.

LOL

X Johnson would make this team worse. He would decrease our Ken Pom offensive efficiency rating instantaneously.

Top 10 might be a stretch. Top 20 absolutely. West Lafayette isn't a hot destination. Purdue itself is amazing and Mackey is one of the best in the country. If Purdue was in Florida and California I bet we could recruit in top 10 very frequently. Lots of recruits don't care about the city where the school is located. Unfortunately a lot do.

Location doesn’t matter. If it did, Miami and USC would be basketball powers, not places like Villanova, MSU and Kansas.

To get whom?

Over the past few years, which players in the portal would have taken us to a FF?

Which players were the caliber of Ivey/Colvin, AND would have meshed with this team?

This should be an interesting conversation...
Anyone that’s an upgrade over IT and Morton.

Anyone want to talk about guards? Particularly the difference in guards who can get their own shot?
I’ll wait.

This is literally how Rutgers has beat us 4 times in a row. Keep it close then just let their two guards kick our ass. Once they got it down to 6 you knew it was coming.

Painter loves small, undersized guards.
Why I wasn’t excited about the Braden Smith signing. Kid is 5’10., 170, about like IT.
He’ll get abused like the rest of our undersized guards.
your shoulder still sore? 🤣
Not to sound conceited, but I’m right more often than I’m wrong. And I’m very right on our guard situation.

Painter is going to have to let Ivey initiate more and when teams run press find a way to get it back to him early once over the half court line. Can't have 10 seconds of Hunter/Morton dribbling around doing nothing.

Congratulations to you on your self-proclaimed victory lap here. Conceited doesn't really describe you. I'd call it more of a false ego. You know, the kind where someone actually believes they're a lot smarter than they really are, with a huge blind spot for your weaknesses. I've worked with SO many guys like you. It's pretty easy to diagnose...

Why do you continue to whine about this? As a coach you can't manufacture a player. All you can do is recruit the best guys you can and then put them on the court. There's always going to be weaknesses -that's the challenge. Win with less than a perfect team. I think Painter is pretty good at it.
