Another Guard…

Painter loves small, undersized guards.
Why I wasn’t excited about the Braden Smith signing. Kid is 5’10., 170, about like IT.
He’ll get abused like the rest of our undersized guards.

Not to sound conceited, but I’m right more often than I’m wrong. And I’m very right on our guard situation.
yes, you're a legend in your own mind.

So... who is this mythical player from the portal who will lead Purdue to the FF, and will mesh with the team?

If you truly are a Purdue fan, looks like you are in for a long stretch of frustration. Painter will be coach as long as he chooses, giving you plenty of opportunities to harp, carp, and whine.

That's Painter and the coaching staffs job to figure out. But, I'm pretty sure it's not another undersized guard who only has offers from D2 programs.

And every time he bows out of the NCAA early, you'll tell us how lucky we are. How we can't get anyone better. How it's too hard to recruit to Purdue because there's no beach and it gets cold in the winter.

Can't answer that question because you don't know how Painter would utilize them.
I didn't want Phinesee when he was being recruited. Lander has obviously been a disappointment.
X Johnson I do like. Next to Ivey, he'd be our most athletic guard and I'd take him over our 3.
I feel like you have not been watching any IU games. I do NOT want Xavier Johnson here. I think you are only saying that to support your transfer portal narrative.

  • XJ would be our second best G next to Ivey. He's 6'3, 200, good ball handler, can create, get to the rim, etc.

  • In three seasons at Pitt, had 1,152 points, 311 rebounds, 415 assists and 124 steals in 84 career games ... started 81 of 84 games
  • Ranks sixth in the Pitt career record books with 4.7 assists per game
  • Became the first Pitt player to surpass 750 career points and 300 career assists as a sophomore
  • Has scored in double figures in 66 of 84 career games ...recorded 15 games with 20 or more points scoring, including two 30-point efforts
  • Posted five double-digit assist games ... has dished out five or more assists in 45 contests

I watched their game against Wisc. He almost single handedly blew that game. Reach higher for the unicorn, he's out there just waiting for you to find.

He is an inefficient chucker that is bad for team cohesiveness. Pittsburgh was happy to see him go.

your answer is meaningless.

You're advocating going to the portal for this mythical savior.

My question is quite straightforward, quite clear: Over the past few years what player would have taken us to the FF. The fact you refuse to go on the record is quite telling.

Hmmm… sounds like you have a “settlers mentality” instead of a “winners mentality”…

Congratulations. This ranks up there with the delusions of some of the silliest fans in the IU fanbase. Previously you told us that you set goals for this team and they are failures if they don't meet your goals. Now you set goals for the coaching staff to bring in Xavier Johnson or a second Jaden Ivey (unbelievable that you think of them in the same light) before the next semester starts. lol.

Wonder?

@bonefish1 would you take this guard in the portal?

“Combo-guard who shoots the ball well from the perimeter. He's a plus athlete with a long and rangy build, quick feet, and good speed in the open floor. He's an improving ball-handler who is now more able to be a qualified secondary ball-handler and make plays off the dribble.”

Doubtful. "improving ball handler" means he's not a good ball handler.
Would need to see some tape. Who's he playing against? Measurements?

I can't wait until Braden Smith gets here. All 5'10, 150 of him. He and IT are going to have some epic battles in practice! I'll see similar size when I go watch a girls JV game tonight.

Because Marcus Carr led Minnesota to such great heights!!

Yeh, this guy sucks, he wouldn't have been an upgrade to our current guards not named Ivey.

Howc is he doing for Texas?

In fairness to Smith, he DOES appear to have more playmaking to him than Hunter and IT - at least from what I've seen from an admittedly small sample size.

And seems to be a much better shooter than Hunter. Hunter's stroke is flat, and even when he DOES make one (rarely), it typically isn't a a "swish," or indicative of a pure shooting stroke.

Smith's stroke looks pretty damn good, and he seems to be much more of a playmaker than Thompson.

That said, his size is a fair concern. We shall see.

This thread has devolved into a pointless circular argument. Yes, we all want the next Michael Jordan on the team. That would be nice, so yes, Bony has a point. Somewhere out there there must be a better guard than the ones we have. Speculative and unbounded fantasy. It would be nice to have a whole bench full of Jaden Ivey's I suppose. The problem is those players don't come along very often. You can't get them from the transfer portal except under very rare and unusual circumstances (i.e. tampering?).

Trying to argue that some guards on other teams are better than the guards we have is fine, but why? What are we going to do? Go kidnap Carr? As for IU's XJ, right there Bony lost me. That guy is a mediocre point guard on a mediocre IU team. He pads his stats by selfish plays and against weak competition. Either Coach Woody is going to yank a knot in that kid's tail or IU will spiral downward due in part to XJ's play. No, I don't want that kind of player on our team!

You and Lil Andy seem to have this weird thought that I believe the NCAA will let Painter add a player mid year.
Painter should have added one in the portal. The bar to upgrade wasn’t high.
Going into next year, he needs to replace Ivey. Only place to do so is the portal. Maybe he will.

Shaka for Painter.
XJ = Jaden Ivey.

Everything you say after that is like the adults speaking in a Charlie Brown cartoon. Only funnier.

We all know that you like to move the goalposts and change your story when proven wrong, but in response to questions about what this team needs to improve, you repeatedly harp that they need another Jaden Ivey. You repeatedly harp that you aren't happy with the guards on the roster, so you harp about shoring up weakneses with this team, and harp that Xavier Johnson from IU would be a great addition.

Unlike all current guards on the Purdue team, XJ was unrated out of high school. If Painter had signed this kid, you would have gone even further over the edge harping for Painter to be fired and replaced by Shaka. But since XJ isn't on the team, in your mind he would be Purdue's savior. Please don't harp and blame others because you post deranged stupidity.

Pittsburgh... Minnesota... Texas...

A few questions come to mind... Which stop would we have been, what makes you think he'd still be here, and who would have replaced him?

(By the way, at least you tried...)
The guy would be the Painters most talented guard next to Moore, CE and Ivey.

Didn't say to get XJ out of high school, said he would have been a good pick up in the portal. But, I know you're part of the group who thinks we're just fine at the guard position and there was not reason to try and upgrade.

I hope Painter gets to multiple FF and wins multiple NCs. But if he doesn't, he'll still be asking Shaka what the experience was like (after Shaka's team ran Painters team off the floor).

Marcus Carr, that saviorBone swoons for, so far this year with Texas , against lesser competition than Purdue has faced, has put in 8 pts a game , on 38% shooting from the field, 28% shooting from 3 pt, has 3.6 assists per game vs 1.8 Turnovers a game. Those are pretty mediocre stats!
