While we wait on David Bell and Malik Hall, I thought it would be interesting to see everyone’s opinion on how next years class fits in next year. As we’re all excited on how the class is coming together, I’d like to see everyone’s guess on which of them will actually become starters and how many will be in the playing rotation. Here’s my prediction:
Starters: 6
Playing time: as many as 16

I would be willing to guarantee you that six true freshmen are not in the starting lineup when we open in Reno next September.

I agree. Let's not be so quick to write off this year's roster. With another whole year of physical development, a full season of experience and an entire spring and summer to work on skills, the group that you're watching now will be a LOT better and the incoming 2019 class, though talented, will all be freshmen in the Big 10. It's not as easy to earn a starting spot in one of the top 2 conferences in the country as some may think. I think that 16 of them lettering is realistic but I don't see more than a couple earning starting spots for the opener barring injuries. As we see so far this year, experience counts for a lot.

Look no further than this year's freshman class. It is superior in talent to the prior 3 classes, yet only one truly exceptional player could be considered a starter. Development is a big deal in football. Next year I see a true freshmen starting at defensive end and at outside receiver. That's about it. I expect to see a few guys from the 2018 class make a jump next year.

I doubt Graham would start over Mosley. Also, Trice and Bell will have a good shot at the Safety positions as well.
Jalen Graham in my view is the outlier of our remaining 2019 targets. Kid is having sensational senior season at Cass Tech and some D1 schools are now offering him at QB? I hope we can still get him. Experience would probably dictate that Mosely would play over him at FS next year but head-head comparison is as follows in HS;

Graham .8614 3*, 6'2" 210, 4.48 40
Mosely .8323 3* , 5'11" 180, 4.55 40

Cass Tech & Bloomfield Hills in MI HS share same class and play common opponents ea year as well

I'll bet you there are six true freshman in the two deeps and that at least six will start sometime next year (that might be a little more questionable, but I still bet it happens).

And you read my comment very carefully I am sure. What Purdue QB’s in the last 70 years started the first game of their college careers?

My guesses since 77 are Herrmann, George (although I can't remember if he started his 1st game) and Etling. I thought prior to the mid-70s, freshman weren't allowed to start.

Dale Samuels, Bob Griese and Mike Phipps started the first game they were eligible. Samuels Lost, but that broke Notre Dame’s 39 game streak without a loss in his second start. Griese scored all 17 points in a win over Ohio at home. Phipps started in the road in the Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M and won 28-21.

No on Etling. Came out of the bullpen in relief of Appleby in a shellacking we took by NIU

Doug Downing was pissed when George got starting nod in 86' until game #2 at home against Pitt when George threw (5) Ints, lost (2) fumbles and was sacked (6) times. He finally gave up after questionable injury and rode off the field with his mommy in 4th QT-PU lost its next 6 games and that was the end of Leon Burtnett…...Downing eventually had decent career playing on some terrible teams for 2 yrs.

Mark Herrman came in for Joe Metallic in the 2nd QT of season opener at MSU in 77'-so you are correct, he did not start his 1st game. But, if I recall (mind fails me nowadays) I thought Scott Campbell started the first game of 80' season against ND which would have been his Frosh year. Was that the game Herrman was suspended for getting caught at a strip bar in WL? or was he hurt?
was friends w/ Metallic during my time ( 74 - 78) was a really nice guy and as far as Hermann, he injured his right thumb on a helmet during warmups of nd game.

Ah, first game eligible versus as a freshman eligible. I didn't catch the clarifier correctly.

Assuming we get Graham and Weaver, I would agree that these guys all have a chance at starting or more likely getting into the two deeps. I could see Sparks & Bell at WR with Moore in the slot. Bell would have to beat out Anderson and Taylor who will have a year of experience in the program by then, but I suspect he could do that. With the additions of Rice & Sheffield we are already going to have a much more talented WR Corps and adding Bell would be outstanding. I feel like DE is one position where Karlaftis & Weaver (if we get him) would have a chance to possibly start. So far that is a position that has not impressed me this year at all and I feel like if these could have a legit shot at either starting or playing very meaningful minutes.
