Would love to hear how we ended up at Odom

Im just not sure who was out there, and I read a lot of lists from the “experts”. The reach coaches that came up were Iowa State and Arizona State and neither was leaving for Purdue in its current state. Perhaps that’s what you mean by settling and I get it. However, among the small schools we got a guy that has a resume that’s a step above WKU coach that I’d expected AND I think that’s a good thing considering BoBos last off script hire
Campbell comes up in every coaching search, every year for every team. Dude is not leaving Iowa State at this point I am not even sure a Blue Blood could pull him.

I'm OK with the hire. I like that he has HC experience in the SEC, so the lights won't be too bright.
Would love to know who Bobo's first call was to? What call was Odom? Did we reach out to Campbell, Mullen, Kelly?

I believe Odom was in the $2M range at UNLV, I suspect we got him for....$5M? Hopefully he brings his staff and any players who can play in the B10.
I thought I saw he was expected to be at $3.75m with the whole package. And there was some thought if he waited another year he might have some better options so I suspect it will be closer to $6m.

Introduction tomorrow morning?

There is a short 45 second clip. Loved the way he presented himself. Short and to the point.

Very reassuring...no mumblespeak, no over-the-top rah rah foolishness, no gimmicky name for the playbook.

Odom seems like he understands the enormity of the task and exudes a quiet, competent confidence that he is equal to it.

I think he deserves more credit than that and wouldn’t call this settling. He took over two programs that were in bad spots and put them in the + side of the win column. So if anything he could help us get out of shitville. We are coming off of a 1-11 season. If in his first 3 years he does what he did at Mizzou 4, 7 and 8 wins….I’d say that’s remarkable progress given the current state and schedules we have.
Checking the portal, he doesn't have a lot to bring with him. Out of 17 of his players entering the portal, only seven are left. I'd think it's easier for a coach to win at Mizzou and UNLV than at Purdue.

With Walter's dismissal...

How could Walters hire an OC and DC that showed piss poor results on the field and expect to keep his job?? I thought that the DC was just as bad if not worse than the offense......
With the DC, it was basically just a patsy to run Walters system. There was 0 difference in results when Kane called it vs when Walters called it. It schematically didn’t work without NFL guys seemingly at every spot. And if you have that, ANY defense should work at this level.

The “bump” we got in 2023 results wise when we won a few was more to do about level of competition and had nothing to do with better or elevated play.

To come in here and run the same defense for 24 games that never worked and lacked the talent to make it successful was the biggest downfall. We never had chances in half these games because we were never set up to stop our opponents.

The OC was serviceable at times but lacked invention, lacked in game awareness and his scheme did t put anybody in a position to shine at the WR or CB spots. Double down with poor fundamentals and a lack of discipline throughout the program you get 4-8 and 1-11 coming off of basically our 2 year program high water mark. An epic and colossal failure.

Fire Matt Painter Petition...

Nope. It's his job to bring in players that fit Purdue's culture. He could have brought in additional players, but chose not to.
The portal offers more mature, experience players that have a resume of performance at some level in college. It offers a coach a better understanding of the "physical skills" a player has. Why is the player in the portal? Is money in play...playing time...chance to be on a bigger stage or a personal challenge? As others have noted, you can get the skills and a player than not only doesn't fit the culture but is a detriment to it. You can get a bad fit out of high school as well, but more than likely not have a freshman that is as crucial to the void to be filled in the portal. Use to be with Juco's the word was it usually took two years for them to be as productive as desired...many times an academic challenge it seemed. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but I like 4* players (certainly take the right 5*s) that want to win and will work to do so that are not selfish in what they personally want to achieve in a certain timeline. Lance was HUGE! Cherished the chance to play at Purdue...no NIL talk, just a chance to compete at the highest level and bringing joy in doing it. Great locker room guy, great fill of a void and great culture. Others are out there like Lance, but most are not. Find the right ones...great, but there is always more to it than the skills you see...and to a degree that can happen down both paths.

Introduction tomorrow morning?

I obviously don't know how scheduling works for these types of things, but introducing the new football coach at 9am on a Tuesday morning at Mackey with nothing else surrounding it seems a little, I don't know, weird? Are you going to get several thousand people there? I doubt it. Granted the deal and travel likely couldn't have gotten done in time for the basketball game yesterday, but couldn't it be timed better?
Especially during FINALS week. But, I suspect this is one of many public appearances the coach will make over the coming months. It does allow students, staff, and fans a chance to hear the coach ASAP post team meeting. I have to believe he is in the works for the next MBB game and possibly the WBB WVB. If I were advising him, you want to get out in front of the public as much as possible to drive excitement. He has to win over hearts and mind!

Wow, that didn't age well, did it?
WTF are you talking about??

1. I posted that on March 23 2023
2. CMP signed Lance Jones out of the portal on April 9th 2023

So you tell me, did he embrace the NIL/portal or not? Without Lance Jones we don't go to the FF period. No idea what your point was of bringing up a post that far back, but even then, you might have taken the 1 minute it took to look up the date of the post and when we signed Jones. So, our ceiling was raised by signing Jones, just like I had suggested.

Whether CMP can be effective long term not going into the portal will be seen as we go. My guess is this year was an unusual one where he didn't sign any transfers. I bet he follows the 2023 model more often than not. Sign a transfer or 2 and try to stay as old as possible.

Not that I should have to defend myself after all the years I've been on here, but for the record I've been a CMP supporter all along. He's not perfect, but I've never called for anyone else to be our coach.

I think it’s exam week too so with the little energy the students have I doubt they’d show out in large numbers.

So Assad is out

The Iranians and Russians are being pushed out of Syria. Hamas and Hezbollah have been severely damaged. Leaders taken out. Israel is destroying Assad's chemical weapons and missile batteries and moving into the buffer zone in Syria.

Does Biden get credit for this or only the blame when the world was burning?
Israel is doing all that despite Biden, not because of him.

Would love to hear how we ended up at Odom

Nah, but I would have gone after a proven winner. Purdue and BoBo keep their propensity to "settle". And I do hope the new mid-pack coach has a lot of success at PU....much better than his 40 and 33 record at two lesser programs

Braden Just Good

A question I have. Does painter want Braden to score more? Or is his scoring the result of other players not scoring?

Would we be a better team if Loyer or Colvin were our leading scorer and Braden just was a floor general directing our offense?

I’m thinking back to the old days of Parkinson and Sichting when they were point guards. Parkinson liked to score and be a point guard. Sichting was more concerned about being a floor general and directing the offense. We enjoyed a lot more success as a team with Sichting although I believe Parkinson ended with higher personal stats.

Do we want to win games? Or do we want our point guard to score a lot of points and become a first team all American? What’s more important?
That was six (6) questions. Start over.

My Weekly CBB Top 25

I'm not someone who cares so much about SOS. And I can't stand the argument. To as if teams can't just be good, even if they haven't had some super difficult schedule is just wild to me. How many years was it for Gonzaga, and yet they'd perform well in March still. Or when Butler had Gordon Hayward or Creighton had McDermott. Those teams were good, even without a high SOS. Some teams are just good. I normally like to see some teams prove it and beat at least one team with a pulse. As for small conference schools(like a Drake), can you beat any P5 team and how do you perform against the lower competition. One thing people don't talk about is the tendency to play down to your competition when in a weaker league. That's a tough mental game to play for 18-22 year olds.
You can't stand the argument that strength of schedule is meaningful? Well, that explains a lot.

PS - It's too bad for Drake that Miami and Kansas State aren't very good this season.
