What’s up with Burgess. ?

I know he’s just a freshman.

But I keep reading his minutes are limited because he is not in playing shape and he just gets exhausted too quickly.

Was he injured during his senior year or during the summer? And he’s recuperating?

Or as a senior in high school did he just walk down the court and his team waited for him to get in place?

I’ve never heard of a healthy player Other than Tractor Traylor who was not in playing shape and could only play for short bursts at a time.

I recall Swanigan and Tre who were recovering from injuries and weight conditioning issues that started their Purdue careers on a limited minutes basis until they met their weight standards and got in playing shape. I fully expect Jacobson will be on a limited minute schedule next year when he returns to play.

So what’s the story on Burgess and his conditioning issues and limited playing time?
He was hurt his senior year at Sycamore and has been trying to catch up his conditioning.

2 out of position

Which is crazy because it should actually be easier to penetrate against hard close outs and defenses focused on not allowing uncontested threes. As someone else posted, I think it’s a comfort / confidence issue with those two.
I agree. We saw Heide go hard to the basket if given space. He needs to do that a couple of times a game not once every 3 or four games.

2 out of position

I am concerned teams will start just sitting on TKRs left shoulder. Haven’t seen it discussed, but outside of doubling, AM had guys that just sat on his right shoulder. He does not appear to have any ability to go left, so doing that took him completely out of the game. I think he needs to to work on that, and fast, or else he’s too easy to read and defend
the crazy part is he HAS the footwork and shots to go either way. And shows it. But seems to always goto his strong side when he thinks it's a serious contest on the shot. Even when guys are much taller and selling out to stop the right hand, he still goes that way most of the time. Just like for Zach, a quick move the other way he's often uncontested to the rim.
He needs to trust his arsenal.

UK at Purdue

Tough loss tonight. I liked our matchup better with Maryland than UK, but I didn't expect to lose by 30, especially at home.

Positives -

Mckenna Layden - nice to see her get some run and hit a couple of 3's. She has a nice shot and on a team that desperately needs scoring/shooting, she should play more.

Lana McCarthy - 12 points, 7 rebs, 3 assists. Thought she did a decent job battling down low against some talented bigs for UK. She needs to change up her free throw routine, practice it, whatever, it's pretty ugly at times.

Turnovers- I'll take 11 turnovers every game from this team.

Negatives -

Overall team performance/coaching- no other way to slice it, this shouldn't happen on your home court. Gearlds seemed to bank on UK missing a bunch of wide open 3's which they did in the first quarter. Once the shots started falling, we didn't stand a chance. Not the best strategy to win games. I get the box and 1 to start to minimize their size, but it's a ranked power 4 school. Eventually they were going to hit those open 3's.

No one was going to stop that Amoore girl, she's a baller.

Jones - 3 TO's again, she was yanked at least once that I saw for poor play. Made some plays right when she came in so it wasn't a horrific night but that TO % needs to come down.

Collier - 28 mins and only 2 points. She is our best shooter imo, but tonight she didn't have it.

Final thoughts -

This one seemed the most disheartening of the 5 losses. It feels like we took a couple steps back as a program today, after a competitive game against a top 10 team last weekend. A full week to prepare as well. How much longer do players still buy in, and fans still show up with performances like this?
The outside shooting is biggest problem. Knock down a reasonable amount of your threes and make your free throws and this is a different game.

Coach Gearlds needs to hit the portal hard and find a couple of knock down shooters.

I love Lana McCarthy and I think she is going to be very good for Purdue. Got to work on those free throws though. She wasn't even close on most of those misses.

Can Cox be Lance

To be fair to Cox, you should have watched Lance as a freshman when he played at SIU. He wasn’t that great. It took Lance 3 years to become a defensive stopper and a 4th year to improve his outside shot. Before coming to Purdue, Lance would shoot a lot and some of his shots would go in the basket. His shooting percentage was not the best.

Lance was awesome at Purdue, but his first 2 years at SIU were nothing to write home about. I doubt anybody here besides SI BOILER and myself even knew he existed his first two years at SIU.

I would say Cox is better as a freshman than Lance was. Is that saying much? No!
Please don’t act like you watched Lance Jones his freshman year 😂 😂

My Weekly CBB Top 25

Just how it is.
Nebraska was able to be efficient because IU can’t play defense. They don’t play team defense/get to the spots they need to. They are bad on the switch for PnR, rice is lost half the time, Goode can’t guard a trash can, Ballo is slow and out of position. It’s ok to admit your team isn’t very good on defense, but for you to think it was all due to Nebraska being the most “efficient” all year is a bit laughable.

Too young?

UConn won with a true freshman starting and being a major contributor. Purdue had a lot of success with Loyer and Braden as true freshmen.

Dukexhas a star freshman who is playing very well despite his youth and inexperience

It’s not about youth and inexperience. It’s about how they blend their talents with existing players and how the pieces fit.

Our freshmen have displayed flashes of their talents but not their consistency.

If you look at our losses, it was our experienced players not making that step forward. Look at our turnovers and lack of rebounds. Tkr is not a freshman. We need more than 5 rebounds a game from him if we expect to beat tough teams.
That is all true. But the players you are talking about are all lottery picks. Braden and fletch had the best player in college basketball in decades to help carry the load that could also hide their deficiencies. None of that is true for us.

The number of freshman that are ready for the show in college is very small. Hell, even edey wasn’t ready as a freshman.

Dillon Theineman committed to Oregon

A lot to unpack here. 4 of 22 players have left. 3 have come back. Yes some had no intentions of coming back but others like they SAID wanted to see who our coach was. Everyone has transfers. The most elite coach in football right now is probably Kirby and we got 4 of his players last year. The hey weren’t on a sinking ship or think their coach is not good. They left a very good winning program for ours. Oregon has some of the most money in college football to give the fact you say otherwise shows how ignorant you are. It’s nike money.
Don’t try to reason with Woleblab…or call him names.

The top of Phil Knight's bucket list is to buy Oregon a National Championship.

Anyone hear how the new coach and team meeting went yesterday?

Let’s hope because this is starting to look like a repeat of two years ago…slow rollout on coaching staff, lots of uncertainty for players, biggest pieces of the roster leaving. It’s almost like BoBo doesn’t get the relevance of 24/7 media in this situation. Whoever in the AD thought Sunday morning announcements were a good idea, and then going radio silent for weeks on end should be fired. Recruits, transfers, agents, and parents are all getting their Purdue information the same way we are - and I’ve seen more coverage on how historically bad we were this season than what is happening to correct things. Odom looks like a solid hire, our AD looks lost - the same as last time.

Towards the end of September Bobo should have been shown the door.

Hopefully Odom can overcome an incompetent AD.

So much for the saying that all these players who entered the portal will return once we announce who our next coach is.

Nice to see Texas, Clemson and Oregon liked our players.

They saw who the next coach was and kept on going. They didn’t like him. He wasn’t that 5 star coach they wanted to play for. He didn’t promise them the rose garden they so desired. Starting and immediate playing time was just not enough. They want to play for a winner. As for the money, there are plenty of other schools who could pay more than Oregon did.

And now our incoming QB has decided to decomit as well.

I don’t believe NIL was as big of a factor as people think it is. I believe our best players left because they wanted a chance to be on a winning team. And they didn’t want to stick it out on a rebuilding team for the next 12 years.

Let’s face it, like rats, they jumped off a sinking ship before they drowned. In today’s college world, nobody who has pro aspirations wants to play on a losing team. They seek that NFL attention and $$$.

The word TEAM has become a 4 letter word in this show me the money society.
