Especially considering his background. I am no walters apologist but his staff was a problem. I dont know if was that he was too young and inexperienced to hire a competant staff, was screwed by the admin, or some combination but theres no way bobinski isnt at fault in this 10 million dollar mess as well.

It was obvious the way we were tackling. After the nd game i was convinced we were doing very little live contact stuff.
Again, i really think bobinski is at fault here. You get a young guy with 0 track record as a hc and even verry little as a dc and expect him to know going in vs learning on the job is going to be a problem. He cant assemble a decent staff due to lack of connections and probably has never even thought about an offensive philosopy or know someone whos actually implemeted it. Anyone watch the unlv ad presser this week. Hes only considering a current hc or a coordinator with hc experience. This is in the mountain west. This was a gamble hire with no support or vision of how it could even work. You can blame the coach for not being ready or the guy that hired him

No the Buck stopped with the chairman of our board Berghoff who was on the committee that essentially overruled bobinski. That’s how the Buck works man it flows all the way to the top.
True, but the last coach where you were going to have a rough week if you made an error was tiller. I heard if you made a key mistake, costly penalty or even dropped a pass early in tillers tenure, it was like “nothing personal, but we will see you at 5 am all week.”

1000%. This extreme probably doesn’t fly any more for multiple reasons but watching the product on the field for 24 games it’s hard to believe Walters instilled any type of discipline, fear or accountability into his players.
It’s a different era now though. All I really as for are 22 guys giving it their best and playing as a team.

I don't want to be the guy that kicks a coach on his way out, but the more that comes out on CRW, the more I feel he either was in over his head or was so focused on the glamor forgot to coach. Either way, I sense that is all going to change with CBO coming in.

Yes. The coach has to build an effective staff and then get out of the way to let them work. Not sure that trust was ever there with Walters.

People still respond to strength to overcome adversity, this hasn’t changed. It’s whether or not the leader is willing to accept the consequences for when strength fails, and then have the awareness to change tactics. Failure to find balance is how you arrive at toxic and everyone realizes there are better places to be.
It clearly wasn't as his first year he tried hand over the reins on calling the D but then ended up having to take that back over and the D did improve when he did. The second year he had to do that with the offense, which as bad as it was, it was better than Harrell. So, you could see he was at least putting in work and does have a good football mind, he just didn't have a staff that could handle the duties, so he didn't have to commit all his time to one side of the ball.
The D was still bad when he was calling it last year. The O was not good while he called it this year.

I guess but you’re talking a good 10-12 years (or more) between the 2 playing meaningful football. Lots has changed with how kids want to be handled and disciplined.
I agree it’s not enough now but you also go to the other extreme then end up with some unchecked bullshit like they had at NW.

Yes, balance is the key. Not inflexible rules for the sake of having rules. But using your noggin' to address issues individually in a way best suited for the best possible results.
Having strict blanket rules isn't leadership, a robot can do that. Leadership is knowing your people and knowing how to get the best out of them, which will vary.
I still contend that next week should be a good week as pieces begin to fall into place with staff and players.
Let’s hope because this is starting to look like a repeat of two years ago…slow rollout on coaching staff, lots of uncertainty for players, biggest pieces of the roster leaving. It’s almost like BoBo doesn’t get the relevance of 24/7 media in this situation. Whoever in the AD thought Sunday morning announcements were a good idea, and then going radio silent for weeks on end should be fired. Recruits, transfers, agents, and parents are all getting their Purdue information the same way we are - and I’ve seen more coverage on how historically bad we were this season than what is happening to correct things. Odom looks like a solid hire, our AD looks lost - the same as last time.
Towards the end of September Bobo should have been shown the door.

Odom already said the people he’s targeted won’t come until the bowl game is over. I’d imagine most are his UNLV staffers. They aren’t done until Wednesday night.
Not sure what you want out of him outside of that. If his staff is finishing out commitments they are finishing out commitments.
Wouldn’t you rather have Odom get his guys he wants to work with or would you rather him hire unemployed bums just because they aren’t doing anything and can start a week earlier?
