Timing of coaching change

The only experience I have with a coaching change is the Brohm to Walters situation as the others occurred before my "wisdom" kicked in. What I recall during that transition it that there was much guessing on who and that it happened rather quickly. I read where the AD said money would be made available to bring in a coach and that they wanted to move quickly.

What is quickly in college sports? I depicted a possible timeline to help me process this (release date = T):
  1. T-21 days, Purdue AD had knowledge of potential release and begins assembling a short list of candidates
  2. T-10 days, Purdue AD has to have a gut feel and sharpens his potential candidates to a short list
  3. T-1 day, Purdue AD confirms release with president and BoT to make the announcement
  4. T, Walters released and search is officially underway, short list of candidates are contacted to gauge interest
  5. T+3 days, Purdue AD should have 1-3 candidates defined as selection progresses
  6. T+5 days, selection is finalized, details are worked out
  7. T+8 days, new coach is announced
Does that timing feel about right to you?
I think it is pretty close. Bobinski seemed to indicate yesterday in the conference that they expected to announce a new coach in 7-10 days.

Why doesn't the University help support athletics financially?

Because the university is funded with taxpayer money and minor league sports is not remotely within the mission of the university.
Well stated. I’d love it if my favorite university sports programs had more money, but it should not come from the academic side. If it flows the other way and sports financially benefit the university or offer greater exposure after a successful season, then that’s the point of having sports teams and they’re doing their job.

Ok, now that it's done, who's hearing what about a hire?

Redacted from The Athletic, these are the candidates to replace West Virginia head coach Neal Brown:

The most intriguing — and perhaps most polarizing — name in this search is Rich Rodriguez, currently the head coach at Jacksonville State.

UNLV’s Barry Odom has done an amazing job turning around the Rebels in two years

Army coach Jeff Monken has done a remarkable job turning around the football program at West Point.

Ohio coach Tim Albin, another Oklahoma native, spent over a decade as the Bobcats’ offensive coordinator before taking over for Frank Solich.

One Power 4 coordinator to keep an eye on is Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

Another Penn State assistant who might be in play is Nittany Lions assistant head coach/co-OC Ja’Juan Seider

The biggest potential wild card in the search could be Jimbo Fisher.

Colvin and Hiede

He was 3-9 in the first 3 games. Didn't shoot against Bama and is 0-10 since. Maybe wide open in rhythm but he clanked one against Ole Miss like that. Mechanics didn't look off. Some guys just aren't good as the line starts moving back.
He's been playing college basketball for a month, I wouldn't shut him down yet. If he can't figure it out over the next six weeks I'd hope that Cox can step up and take some of those minutes.

Why doesn't the University help support athletics financially?

And how many of those universities have maintained a tuition freeze for 14 years? None. The same as the amount of money there is available to fund the sports at Purdue from student fees or taxpayer dollars. NIL is also now competing for donors with the rest of the academic programs, which will have negative impacts.

And the few studies that have been done on benefits of a winning football program (note only elite football teams seem to get this benefit) are model based analyses, published in subpar journals, are old (seems to be a topic of interest for a small group of researchers in the early 2000s) and poorly cited suggesting questionable study design and wishful thinking interpretations of the results. There appear to be no studies showing basketball has these effects, so that sucks for Purdue. And more recently there are several recent studies questioning whether universities should lose their tax exempt status because of athletics revenues.
I'm not understanding how Purdue's brilliant, innovative idea to freeze in-state tuition would in any way be harmed by more substantive investment in football... Purdue has engaged in multiple high-priced intercollegiate sports upgrades in the 14 years of the tuition freeze, with no diminution (that I'm aware of) in the quality of the university's academics:

*a spectacular upgrade to Mackey Arena;
* a spectacular upgrade to Ross-Ade;
* spectacular new baseball and softball facilities;
* spectacular re-design of our golf courses (Purdue has probably the premier collegiate golf facility (in terms of the quality of the courses) in the country;
* swimming and diving ;
*Tennis;
*womens' soccer

How in the world could all this sports spending have occurred, all while maintaining the in-state tuition freeze??

Smith, Loyer, Colvin, Heide and TKR.

35mpg.

And someone needs to tell Harris to quit shooting 3s. Dude is at 15% right now. I think Dwight Howard could do that.

Purdue just isn't very deep this year but that starting lineup is very good. Painter played 8 last game. Harris played 15 minutes(should have probably been 5 with the extra 10 going to Colvin). First played 11 and Cox played 5. I'm sure Painter will have Harris and Cox playing better as the season goes on but seems clear the rotation is set. Smart move to get Berg out of the rotation.
For Harris, I think you have to shoot them when you're open. They'll eventually start falling. He's got a nice stroke. Otherwise, you end up with a guy who has no confidence and the other team plays the "Ethan Morton defense".

I am not a basketball expert so no idea if his mechanics are just off or if he just needs to see the ball go into the hoop to get some confidence.

I think he will be better served breaking down defenders and trying to get into the paint for a bucket close to the rim. If defenders are going to sag off because he isn't hitting, he has to find a way to create.

If Braden doesn’t nick the rim, ole miss gets that board but it throws the ole miss player off just enough and Myles is able to do his thing…just like Braden planned 😂
Both Heide and Colvin were crashing the boards for the tip in. Well designed play by the coaches. Poorly defended by OM as you leave a 5'11 guy under the bucket to go against two athletes. Some other OM players might have been caught ball watching.

Purdue’s winningest coaches had Purdue experience

A common thread for the most recent success was Tiller and Brohm brought their staffs with them and had pass oriented offenses. Having both of those items made Purdue competitive. The last hire had neither.
While I think having a creative offense is important, I think it's even more important to have a dual threat QB, not a pro-style pocket passer. You need a guy who can make something out of nothing and create when the coverage breaks down.
I've watched a lot of South Carolina this year and their QB Sellers is amazing. Granted, he's 6'4, 240, but the dude can run. It's like their offensive philosophy is 'Drop back, if your first two reads aren't there, make something happen".
And it works....

Colvin and Hiede

I think it is feasible but why burn a year of eligibility for a couple of games? Use the injury to get stronger and refine your skillset then he can submit for a medical redshirt if necessary.

But to answer the question, I have not heard him say anything specifically about his recovery status.

They tweaked some of the criteria/rules a couple of years ago, but IIRC, Purdue would still be the applicant for the medical hardship waiver. I think there also becomes an issue if an athlete is medically cleared to play but then does not compete for any further games during the season in question.

Agreed. Penn state has a 7 footer who is athletic so wonder if he has Berg try and go out there to counter that…not sure how well it will work but just big body vs big body. Maryland starts two 6’10 post guys that can shoot outside but not ideal. So he may get some mins here…

TAMU is smaller and doesn’t have (to my knowledge) a typical center in the middle so not sure he’d get run here.

Auburn has the best player in the country in broome. Not sure if he will get any mins here but maybe just to give a diff look/use up fouls?
I think Reese for Maryland has taken one career three-pointer and the freshman Queen has a reputation for being able to shoot it but looks like is 0 for 9 on the year from deep (so of course he'll go 4 of 5 vs Purdue). If Berg doesn't play real minutes against those two I'm not sure where he'll get pt this season.

Ok, now that it's done, who's hearing what about a hire?

All the talk about IU’s schedule cracks me up.
I didn’t hear that when they were playing Oh St,Penn St and Michigan every year.
While y’all were playing Minnesota,Norhwesten and Illinois.
Now that’s fair and balanced scheduling.
Those divisions were a joke and you all know that.
The hate across the country for IU having a good year is really weird.
They did not make their schedule,next year they play at Oregon,Penn St and Iowa,it all evens out in the end.
