update on portal

Really? You thought that the game this season was “fun”..?
Really your going to pick out the worst season in program history. I loved rushing the field against Michigan state. I loved rushing the field against Ohio state. There is a reason we are known as the spoilermakers.

High-school blow outs are reserved for Friday night

Defense

True on the 3 point shooting, but the 2 point FG percentage was great. Missed too many free throws which always pisses me off. Probably another 4 points there.

As @Boiler Buck pointed out, Rutgers just gave up in the 2nd half - pretty immature (and I mean age / experience wise) team, but man they have talent.
Rutgers coach tried the route of gettin 2 of the best recruits in the country and didn’t do enough to get veteran guys around them that were P5 quality. I think he is rethinking his strategy and will go back to his past teams.

Purdue at Rutgers: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I think Colvin's moving down the playing chart. He can't shoot, he plays weak defense, and he doesn't help anyone. Harris, Cox, Burgess, Berg and Heide should all play before him.
BERG?! Cmon man. You’re a known combine hater but that’s even outrageous for you to say. Myles is in a slump and you’ve seen what he can do. You don’t just sit the kid cuz he isn’t scoring. He’s making a big impact on defense and you know it. But cmon man.

on the computer where I can see better definitely man. Caleb has Bailey as he had much of the game. Braden on Harper, but watching Bailey and Harper. Fletch down low against the big to get over the top if his man cuts baseline and to cover him if he gets a pass out on the baseline. I like Fletch against him as opposed to some space so the screen cannot be set as effective on a baseline cut. STill in a split second and not seeing Caleb, but seeing the backside...it did give a 2-3 appearance. ;)

Defense

I would say even 30+. We hit our avg of 3s, which had been 4 more and hit 4 more FTs it woulda been a huge blowout.

But also, Rutgers played reaaaalllllyyy baaaaad

It's cold but hell didn't freeze over. 🤣
Sometimes you don't see something directly, but you see enough to know what happened without directly viewing things and sometimes those things happen fast and without enough movement to know for certain. Even now, I can't know for certain in that it looked like excessive sag with drop by Trey where they were in an alignment the same as a 2-3, but then at the top of the screen a player cuts baseline and he gets followed more than just shifting the zone. Actually I made mention a game or two ago that I thought Purdue was sagging a bit more than normal...shading towards a zone. ;) Years ago we had a player that was the states top scorer and many teams played box or pure 2-3 zone or matchup out of a 1-2-2 and so on the first possession he was to run through the lane to see if a player followed him or if the zone shifted with his movement or they just pointed out coverage so that someone was aware even without a shift towards him. In man you can do sooooooo much to form the hybrid you want and to a certain degree a matchup zone can be molded as well.

Defense

I really like these kinds of Purdue teams. They lose a lottery pick, too tall player in Zach Edey, and struggle in early games to find the mix of rotation that works. Painter and his staff have routinely found what works best and lately, this lineup is working great. Gotta love the energy this team plays with. This should have been a 25 point victory, but that's just nit picking.

Be interesting to see how the great improvement we see on the court looks against quality competition. No doubt the D passes the eye test. But the last couple of teams were questionable, at least when we caught them. Part was the D, sure, but let's face it, it's not like these opponents played well either.
