So, he will take portal players. He took two in two years. He also talks about 13 scholarship players which isn't the case anymore. He is going to have two more slots to fill.

But that article clearly establishes:

1. He doesn't view the portal as off limits. He just doesn't want to make it his prime source which no one here is suggesting he do.
2. He'll take portal players if they will help the team. Whether or not that's true will depend on the team and the portal players available, which no one here is disputing.
3. Nothing about "I won't recruit over anyone."
4. He doesn't say, my team is so good I won't possibly take one in the near future.

Bunch of strawmen being created by folks on here because THEY don't like the portal. So they ascribe stuff to Painter like he will never get someone out of the portal to play over a loyal player when he literally did it the last two seasons. Or that he thinks the team is so stacked that no portal player could possibly help. Which he also hasn't said.

Nothing in there says he won't use the portal next season. Nothing in there says he thinks he has a team that can't possibly be improved. Nothing in there says what happens if one or two players leave for next season.

No one here has advocated for him to make the portal his primary method. Or even a big method. Everyone has said one MAYBE two additions would be helpful and everyone has caveated that on fit and culture.


The folks left arguing, and some being aholes about it, are the ones most opposed to the Idea of a portal to begin with.

Berg doesn't seem to be working out and DJ may or may not make a full recovery.
The final four is in Indy next year he might try to find a premier center. It wouldn't be hard to convince one to come to Purdue.
Berg or someone would have to transfer though.

Get a coach with a backbone. Archie was just in way over his head. But even Creans first 3 years of teams put in more effort. They just weren't good. Those teams were absolutely awful but they put in some effort. It comes from the top. Woodson sleep walks everywhere he goes. Players follow suit.

What fact? Lol Painter hasn't once stated he isn't recruiting over anyone and there are myriad examples of him recruiting players at starting positions and then playing those recruits or transfers over players the following season if they better helped the team to win.

So no it's not a "fact" at all. It's your personal opinion that you are trying to bolster by some imaginary conversation you think Painter has where DJ is so talented he's guaranteed to start all four seasons.

It's just not cut-and-dry. If the situation is right, Painter has, and will, go into the portal for a piece. But it's not his general strategy. And I don't see that changing.

But to your other point, I agree: Painter has gone to the portal minimally. The disagreement here is whether he needs to go get a couple of pieces from the portal this off season. I believe he does, at least 2. Others here believe our current roster is as good as we can get and we wouldn't be able to upgrade using the portal. I disagree.
