Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

So, he will take portal players. He took two in two years. He also talks about 13 scholarship players which isn't the case anymore. He is going to have two more slots to fill.

But that article clearly establishes:

1. He doesn't view the portal as off limits. He just doesn't want to make it his prime source which no one here is suggesting he do.
2. He'll take portal players if they will help the team. Whether or not that's true will depend on the team and the portal players available, which no one here is disputing.
3. Nothing about "I won't recruit over anyone."
4. He doesn't say, my team is so good I won't possibly take one in the near future.

Bunch of strawmen being created by folks on here because THEY don't like the portal. So they ascribe stuff to Painter like he will never get someone out of the portal to play over a loyal player when he literally did it the last two seasons. Or that he thinks the team is so stacked that no portal player could possibly help. Which he also hasn't said.

Nothing in there says he won't use the portal next season. Nothing in there says he thinks he has a team that can't possibly be improved. Nothing in there says what happens if one or two players leave for next season.

No one here has advocated for him to make the portal his primary method. Or even a big method. Everyone has said one MAYBE two additions would be helpful and everyone has caveated that on fit and culture.

The folks left arguing, and some being aholes about it, are the ones most opposed to the Idea of a portal to begin with.
A lot of strawmen in this post.

Nutty-Netty, Ben Gvir, Smotrich, etc in that war-party that controls Israel, are all about killing because they take all of those silly stories and nonsense of the Old Testament seriously. How Long Until Sisley De-Commits?

Other than dusty banners and a bunch of old windbags telling stories of the glory days, what makes Woodson a legend to the students? He left IU as a player 35 years ago.
Well he's an IU legend. So that just makes him a legend. Kinda how it works. I mean I wasn't alive when George Washington was around but I'd consider him to be an American legend.

I felt the same way a couple years ago when Purdue went into the season with Braden Smith as the only true point guard on the roster, but it worked out ok. There are no guarantees with DJ and there is a chance that he’s a disappointment, but there’s also a very real possibility that he’s an impact player next season. He surprisingly showed quite a bit in those 26 minutes before he got hurt.

As far as Burgess, he’s really making the most of his minutes and Purdue is playing well as a team when he’s in the game. He’s got good efficiency numbers and his offensive rebounding has been the best on the team from a percentage perspective. I trust him and, as a sophomore, I expect him to be ready to take on a bigger role.
Obviously it worked out but we all know what Painter did early on right? He went after Pack.

You're right, DJ has a wide range of possibilities, and one of them is four year starter, but that's not locked in yet, and Painter still is going to look for more talent at every position and let it play out in practice. Burgess is certainly someone we don't wanna lose. He also has a wide range.

update on portal

When I see people talking about Painter scheduling a tough OOC on the football forum I have to shake my head.

Two completely different situations when you have 30+ games and a 68 team tournament which makes SOS very important and where a couple of bad losses matter a lot less than when you have 12 games and can only lose 6 of them and where SOS doesn't determine where you play a bowl game or even whether or not you play in the playoffs.
Different programs too. One played in the national title last year and have been consistent in the big ten for some time while the other is about as low as you can get.

We did have a pimp. I'm assuming DeAndre Thomas. Can't convince me otherwise. And a drug dealer. Not sure which that one was. Would have had another but he was busted while in high school and that ruined his career. Bud Mackey. Busted dealing cocaine in Kentucky.
Wish there was a doc of the IU/Sampson era.

Former commit "going through it right now"

Didn't realize he dropped out of the starting rotation. Doing some reading - coach said he needed more intensity and that is why he switched to Mag.

Hard for a freshman when they hit that wall which it looks like he hit. Got to find ways to stay engaged/active and make those little plays.
Still a lot of season to go, and a lot of opportunities to improve both physically and mentally. He needs to decide if he will continue working (earning his pay) and fight through it, or give up and squander it.

I've read a lot of back and forth in this thread and it's funny to me that both sides are saying slight variations of the same thing and treating them like counterpoints.
I think the extreme views we have seen from a couple of posters saying we need 3-4 portal additions is what’s making it seem like there are disagreements.

My point was that Painter won’t use the portal unless absolutely necessary. The differences lie in people’s definitions of what is necessary for next year.

Former commit "going through it right now"

Good point. Didn’t he have some issues similar to this before he left Brownsburg? i don’t think OTE or whatever “league” he went to helped him iron those issues out.

Seemingly came from a good family and has the skills. Can’t let the pressure boil over and cause you to be a problem because you’ll earn more bench time.

If he can’t figure something out, with AJ Dybansta coming next year, he is really going to be fighting for playing time.
Glad Painter said, “ nah, we’re good”, when the young man called back to recommit…

And on the other hand, I’m sort of shocked that he didn’t break this off sooner. Guess talent can blind anyone.

I really do hope the kid figures it out somewhere.

The 1948 war ended with Israeli forces controlling approximately 78 percent of historical Palestine. The remaining 22 percent fell under the administration of Egypt and Jordan.

To the victor go the spoils. That's how wars work.

Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

You may have missed some points.

"I think I'll go into the portal when I have to. I don't think it will be my decision,"

Paint counts on retention and focuses his NIL on that aspect. That’s how he gets old and stays old. He doesn’t feel the need to go into the portal unless absolutely needed and when he has, he has taken fifth year guys.

“At some point, Painter might have to jump into the transfer portal with more regularity. But the fact the he didn't have to during the offseason is a big reason why the media believes the Boilers will "three-peat" as Big Ten champs.”

Painter is considered one of the best coached in the country and one reason that is so is because he doesn’t lose players. When he has lost players it is due to lack of PT.

I get what you’re saying but I also feel you’re not hearing Painter say the things he has said about loyalty and retention being more important than going into the portal. I could also see him grabbing a big this offseason to shore up what will probably be the biggest question mark of next years team. I’m pretty sure however he feels DJ is the starter at the five spot.
No one has said he should stop making recruiting and retention his primary method. NIL is new. He's going to lose players because of it. So yeah in the near future he's going to have to bite the bullet, but no one has missed any points because no one is advocating he do anything other than what he's done literally the last two seasons.

But you've said the same thing we've said, he'll probably need to grab a big in the portal.

DJ is the starter now. I see nothing to suggest he's a guaranteed four year starter. He may turn out that way, but he's played one exhibition game and a few minutes of an actual game. Folks declaring him a four year starter I don't get. And Painter hasn't said it.

So what this is, is a mixture of people who think the team is perfect as is and the portal is the debbil and only brings bad things, and the team doesn't need any help, with people who might agree the team could use some help but think the portal is some evil thing where the odds of finding help are minimal.

And the other side is folks saying Painter should do the thing he's done two seasons in a row. Add a key piece or two in areas of need.

No one is saying Painter is doing something wrong, or Painter sucks, or Painter is stupid, or Painter needs to change. He literally needs to do what he's done the last two seasons. The only tweak is there's no reason to limit it to fifth year players. If there's a good fit who can make it a better team then he should and most likely will go get that player.

Loyalty means building the best team possible and being honest and giving a fair chance to compete. It doesn't mean I'll never bring in a better player than you
