Name the last player who was redshirted and opted to play his fifth year somewhere else and would have been an asset to our team? Maybe Aaron wheeler. Haarms doesn’t Count because it was not a voluntary redshirt but basically an NCAA sanction. In today’s world it makes no sense to redshirt any player. While he may not receive many minutes as a freshman, the reality is if he doesn’t make any type of impact his second year, he will most likely transfer. And you are basically giving his next school a year of eligibility to use.
And if the player remains and is not making an impact by his 4th year is he really worth keeping for his 5th year using up a scholarship that could be given to someone else?
Is a player who only plays 1-3 minutes a game in his 4th year really worth having him red shirt that first year?
If a player that red shirted his freshman year and stayed 4 years and earned his degree and is a role player his senior season even going to want to stay for a 5th year?
Redshirt makes way more sense as they will get another year (if Purdue chooses to keep them!) to make $200k+ at Purdue. It gives them a choice if they want to come back and make that money.
