Which is worse - SMU's sudden death, or Purdue's football suicide?

At least SMU's administration had the desire to win. (They did NIL before NIL was legal)

A half-game win season, which follows a 4 win season, is a program killer. Has any school recovered from this type of poor leadership?

While I’d argue this team looks worse than the Purdue Hazell teams, it took awhile but Brohm brought us back to above our average of wins.

I’d like to think that with a coach that understands fundamentals and what to do when facing a talent discrepancy we can get back to respectable writhing 2-3 years.

Didn’t SMU get the “death penalty” which shut down their football program for two years in the late 1980’s? In either case (getting the death penalty or trying to revive the program after the last two years), the fallout was/will be dramatic especially with the B10 going to 18 teams with many national names and a neighbor to the south headed to the playoffs after years on life support.

Yes, SMU was a national powerhouse and was caught cheating under Coach Ron Meyer (hired by Indianapolis Colts) The NCAA suspended their football program for 1987-1988. The SMU Homecoming was celebrated at soccer matches.

I am not a big Wikipedia fan, but here is a decent article:

Interesting note: Iowa coach Hayden Fry coached at SMU

Ron was the coach at SMU when I worked/lived in Dallas. A few other Purdue connections, other than just Ron, with SMU football at that time.
