Purdue at Ohio State: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

It happened because we played poorly. This was not a case of us playing a good team shooting well.

We played a bad game against a bad team.
We haven't played a good game in awhile. We've won while doing so, which is great, but it's hidden some real issues that need to be fixed.

Not any real disagreement here.....the guard penetration still a big issue.

Let's see what they do going forward.....I think they're better positioned, but they definitely need to play better.

New year…same BS. Why do the majority of fans put up with Painter. Fools Gold!
What are you smoking. Dude, there are things that we could question but we are #2 in the country.

B1G are inconsistent at calling a game. I believe Zach if he's getting hit on swat downs.

This is was a game our guards needed to stay in front of their man. Angles weren't going to help because they were hitting that mid range shot.

One possession short for Purdue - just got outplayed for the most part and didn't convert enough opportunities. Fought back when it could have gotten out of hand, but that is little solace now.

Going to be a dogfight with Illinois just one game back......I don't see too many teams beating the Illini right now.

Disappointing game today.....but it happens, unfortunately.
Lance took a bad shot in the lane with about 4 to go and Zach got the ball with Caleb and Ethan on the court and passed it to Ethan as the clock was winding down and someone maybe Lance or Fletcher had to take a worse shot as a result. Executing there would have put Purdue tied or in the lead and flipped the MO. Lot of missed shots inside sometimes 3 or 4 time point blank…were they fouled or just miss baskets 8 inches from the rim.. lot of slapping on the ball and only one foul called.

Purdue out of sync after the start and never got 50/50 balls or many longer boards…just not quick enough.

Most on this board got what they wanted Loyer and Morton continuing to play and this shows what happens against physical guards.
Lance gave up more points than any. Thornton was beating him because he tends to over play and go for steals. It wasn't working and he should have realized it.

How many bunnies did this team miss as well. Just a bad overall game where we didn't get blown out.

Amazingly it's still only quad 1 loss.

Yeah.....Ohio State is in the top 75 NET, so metric-wise, this isn't a terrible loss for Purdue.....but, by a bunch of other measures/perspectives it is.

Boilers were due for a loss at some point - maybe this helps them (glass half full guy talking there...haha).....want to see a little more fight ALL game long.

they go to Minny I believe

Another court storming opportunity for a weaker team and a fill-in assistant coach gets a resume boost for a good paying position. Third coach in last couple years to benefit. SMH
Hopefully this is the last learning moment this team needs this year. Still have Illinois on the road and MSU one game in Lafayette to win conference. Playing like they have last couple weeks won’t get it done. Not only winning conference but a top seed in tournament are in question.

and mostly on the road. Before the season, this looked like a really tough game. In hindsight, the Holtmann firing really helped today. Of course, Purdue's defense was suspect today.

Purdue suspect on both sides of the ball.

Refing poor. But not as poor as Purdue's play... abysmal.

How many top 15 teams have lost to unranked lowly teams this year??

A crazy high number this year.
You've just described the state of CBB. No handful of teams dominate like in CFB. It's been that way for a few decades now.

Also, that OSU team is not that bad. They have decent talent and could be extremely dangerous in the B1G Tourney. Not saying they'll win it (they won't) but they'll be a headache for the other teams. Sometimes a coaching change is all that's needed to energize a program

They host Minnesota, although that could be a competitive game.

Illinois is @ Penn State, has Iowa twice, @ Wisconsin, Minnesota and Purdue at home.

Badgers are hard to figure right now, but I think that's a good match-up for Illinois.
Badgers are doing their typical season end decline, that team never changes, they are athletically challenged and have the same type of players every year then tank, esp under Gard

any team is only as good as its weakest link…and ours is Loyer w/no backup. Athletic, skilled guards will be our downfall in the Big Dance and were on display today.
Loyer's backup is his former self. Loyer can be great, (see IU game), but if he is going to disappear, we are screwed.

This is the kind of team we could lose to in the tourney. A team hacking Edey with no calls and a guard who becomes hot while having others hit 3’s. Probably the kind of team lots of other teams would lose to as well but for sure our cryptonite.

So basically we can lose to anyone.

Lol. Come on we played so bad on both sides we looked as bad as iu - if that's possible.

Had little to do with OSU.

We can lose anyone as long as Painter continues ( which he will ) to play Loyer major minutes and puts Morton in to pass up shots. It’s his fault he hasn’t played and developed Heide and Colvin, and when they do play they are timid cause the know one mistake and they are pulled

Disagree with some of this. But agree with the long leash on Loyer.

But it's on the players. Heide and Colvin need to step up big time in practice.

It's not like Loyer would be hard to supplant. Other than iu who won't't play D, he has been average at best to often completely woeful in B10.

Remember they really don’t practice ( hard at least ) this time of year . Because of fatigue and risk of injuries most of the practices are actual half pace walk throughs. Individual drills are still there but a chance to show in a full scrimmage at full speed just don’t happen

"IF" a player gets hot and others knock down 3s and they have the fouls to give "if called" due to bodies and definitely the fouls to give it not called on Zach...whether Northwestern, Nebraska and OSU today and another team tomorrow...Purdue can lose. Purdue was not mentally sharp today and when they had a shot to flip the game with 4 minutes or so Purdue made bad choices. This wasn't the OSU team that has been getting beat and then wasn't the Purdue team that has played most the year. If Holtman is coaching Purdue pulls it out, not because he was a worse coach but the OSU players were in a funk. They circled the wagons and was right there with Purdue due to Thorton when Purdue jump out in front and they didn't fold. OSU has talent, they just haven't played well much of this season

We didn't even try shooting in the 2nd half. No jumpers or 3's hardly. Edey had it swatted away what seemed like 10 times. Smith just dribbling around. Didnt look very fluid at all today. Free throw shooting was the only good thing today.

Yeah it's the long leash part.
Give him a chance to heat up but when he clearly doesn't have it, Painter has to be more willing to sit him in the second half and try other options.
