OC

Still can't admit he was bad here.
He was definitely horrible here. You must have missed as early as 8 weeks ago when I was okay with them firing him at any time. His move to offensive coordinator made him more ridiculous than hazell.

Odom will walk backwards to being better than Walters. I’m just not sure he’s going to be better than 5-7/4-8.

Walters doubly screwed us by not doing well enough to keep his job until revenue sharing kicked in.

I’m fine with anyone calling Walters our worst coach ever. At least hazell produced some tough linemen and defenders by his 4th year

It would be awesome if his OC joined him, but feel like he can get an effective guy in place if not. The problems with this current team go wayyy beyond just the offense. They need to improve in nearly every aspect of the game starting with some shit that’s so basic even 6th graders looked better at it. Just seeing better tackling and drives not stalled by idiotic penalties will be an improvement. I think Odom is the right guy for fixing an entire team that was basically FUBAR.

A game from 7 years ago is massively irrelevant. Odom has since proved he has an eye for talent and if he has to find a new OC, he has a track record of finding good ones. I mean he did find the "stud" one that was on the staff at UNLV right?

This is a solid hire of a coach with experience in rebuilding crap programs.
Any coach has to have players, and as of today he doesn't have any to speak of. Big ol' empty bag.

Looks like Marion changed his bio to Oklahoma St OC. Harsin took the OC job at Cal. Hopefully Coach Odom can bring in someone with an exciting offense.
If we go 8-4 every year and win games 16-10 like Iowa does I'd be happy. Wins, i want wins! How we get there is not as important to me. I like that he wants to emphasize OL and DL. I consider the OL to be the heart and soul of a team, for better or worse.

As always, there's clearly another side to Sluka's story.
Honestly, It has nothing to do with his side of the story. I would rather question what agent he used to solidify the deal with.

Verbal agreements are in most cases considered 'ex-parte'. I would never leave a deal on the table without signatures and review by my legal counsel. I would blame my agent first, myself secondary....but he's young and doesn't understand the language of such deals.

3 sides - the agent, the player, the coaches.
Coaches can't directly have anything to do with NIL.

They can influence, promote and make the athlete attractive. It would be the schools collective team to make sure these athletes are getting the deals that are necessary to entice the 'big time' recruit.

If we are competitive, go 6-6 on average with an occasional upset of an elite program, and then have a good year every 3 or 4 years where we do better I’m happy.

Happy with 6-6? I disagree.
We should be on the same level with WI and Iowa, pushing for 10 win seasons, sniping 1 or 2 of the big 5, competing for a championship and playoff spot every few years.

I respect your expectations, and it’d be nice to consistently win 10 games. I’ve just never seen anything close to that level of success at Purdue and I’ve had a ton of fun at Ross Ade regardless. It’s the inability to play competitive football that I take issue with because no one has fun at those games.

What i dont understand is everyone thinking Odom cannot coach offense. Sure he was a defensive specialist, but so was Belichick for the Giants. Then Belichick gets the Browns job, has some pretty good offenses their and then gets the NE job and his offenses take off as some of the best. Sure he had OC's, but he has probably had 6 or 7 offensive coordinators who went on to get head coach jobs and failed and typically the NE offense didnt skip a beat. Sure thats the pros, but same concept.

If you know defense, then you know what gives a defense trouble. Giving credit to an offense only to the OC and not any to the head coach just doesnt work. Look at Walters, he had a great defense at IL, their defense is still good, Purdue's defense sucked for 2 years.

Hiring a coach is always a crap shoot, what worked somewhere else doesnt always work here. But saying Odom doesnt know how to coach or hire offensive coordinators and run a good offense is just silly.

Good hire, lets hope it leads to some good Boiler teams.

I said this before and I just REALLY want to be wrong but I just don’t see Odom being successful here without a Marion-type. Purdue has always done best with and, frankly, Needs to have a unique offense, like Tiller and Brohm; We just cannot & have not been able to compete player-for-player and the GoGo would have given us that. If we bring in someone that tries to run a “common” offense, history has shown countless times here that we won’t like the results. At least someone like Andy Ludwig would use multiple TEs and motion…

This.

Some guys on this board need to look at Odoms total offensive numbers from years past. He averaged over 500 yards per game 2 year at MO and ~480 another year. UNLV offenses with the go go were a bit behind. Odom said at the presser he'd have an explosive offense. His resume backs this up.

As others have pointed out, even if Marion comes along now it's likely for only a year or 2. Im not totally sure that's in our overall best interest. Purdue has always won with a good QB. Imo the offense needs to be one in which caters to a good QB which hopefully we land.

Disagree. There are different offenses that can work at Purdue. Coordinators change all the damn time. Coach Odom said it in his press conference that he isn't going to put a square peg into a round hole. He's not going to force the players into situations that they can't be successful in. So how do you run the Go-Go offense if the players don't fit it? He said he's not going to do that. An offense (or defense) has to work for the players that you have. Not the other way around. I'm confident he can get it done. Maybe not as fast as he thinks though.

As fans, we are clearly experts in both offense and defense, just ask many that post on a message board, but no way a guy who makes 7 figures a year to coach can know both offense and defense.

I really thought that if Walters defense was as good as advertised at Illinois, that we could hold teams to 24 points or less and that would give us a fighting chance to win more games than we would lose.....
To hell with that thought....

A staff plus NIL and transfer portal experience. We'll see how he does and if he's successful.....gone. Let's just hope Odom is successful and sustainable.
He burned out last time and was getting a lot of questions around his recruiting efforts towards the end of his Florida tenure. That's enough to scare me away from him, especially when you are someplace that is going to take some effort to recruit to.
