I'm OK with the hire. I like that he has HC experience in the SEC, so the lights won't be too bright.
Would love to know who Bobo's first call was to? What call was Odom? Did we reach out to Campbell, Mullen, Kelly?

I believe Odom was in the $2M range at UNLV, I suspect we got him for....$5M? Hopefully he brings his staff and any players who can play in the B10.

Hope it works out better than the past 3 defensive minded coaching hires. I felt certain Bobo would atleast look for a sharp offensive mind.

Yeh, that is a concern, but it looks like UNLV ran a uptemp offense with a dual threat QB. With the right OC that the HC trusts, I think it negates that a little.
But.....I was also really, really excited about Graham Harrell. Like, grand slam, sure thing excited. Didn't turn out so well....

We need to retain his OC Marian for sure.

My question is what we do for QB. Some good QBs in the portal, but are we going to spend money or go with a cheaper one and do a Card again?

If you want to do some research their starting qb quit UNLV after transferring there claiming he was lied to about what his Nil compensation was going to be. They said good bye and won their remaining games wighout him

I didn't watch the press conference last week, but didn't Bobinski say that he was looking for a HC that could bring along staff? I'd think that would have eliminated or placed guys like Mullen, Kelly etc lower on the board. I would like to hear who they talked to - would have been a coup to get Campbell.

Them back dooring into the title game made that a bit tougher I’d assume

I think it's pretty easy to figure out. Has had some level of success at two different stops, so you know it's not just a lightening in the bottle.

Then for his age and length of time coaching, he already has a pretty impressive coaching tree, so he's good at identifying coaching talent. That is an extremely under rated trait because if you have a good coordinator, it's just matter of time before he's poached for a higher job so you have to be able identify the next and keep rolling.

Really from everything I've read and heard, I equate him to the Football version of Matt Painter. Good at identifying and surround himself with talent and learns from his past mistakes.

So, while maybe not the exciting hire, he checked all the boxes you could've asked for and I'm convinced, was the smart hire.

You are not getting Campbell, many have tried over the years and failed. With him, you make the call because you have to but already working on the next option because you are 98% sure he's turning you down.

Just listened to Tom Dienhart describing the Jeff Brohm hire while discussing the Odom hire. Apparently Bobinski locked in on him as the immediate favorite and then relentlessly pursued him and did enough to make sure he got his man. He also had a fallback Plan B to be quickly implemented if he didn't land him. He thinks that Odom was probably always Plan A and a decision could be quickly made.

I believe this will be the end of Bo's time at Purdue. Less than impressed with Odom's overall record and much like Hazell when he was declared the savant to take PU to the top of the heap. Far better coaches available IMHO, but then, Purdue hasn't been a destination for greatness on the plastic grass lately.

That said, I wish him well putting a staff together and playing with the big boys in the Big 10.

He's going to be exponentially better than Walters and will have us in a bowl game soon. He did a decent job at Missouri and his rebuilding effort at UNLV was impressive. He has a much longer track record than any coach we've had in recent memory, most of it solid.

And I am glad Bobinski is making the decision and not you.

You would've probably hired Les Miles.

One of my favorite aspects of Odom is that he was a HC in the SEC. He knows what kind of talent and athletes you need on the field.

Does Hudson still have a year left?

And where's your boy Brohm today? I did say both The Haze and Walters weren't qualified and that Brohm would jump to Da' Ville if offered.
And Miles just plain sucked.

So not sure what your point is other than you would've picked a horrible option because he wouldn't have left for another job, of course he wouldn't have gotten another job offer either.

Nah, but I would have gone after a proven winner. Purdue and BoBo keep their propensity to "settle". And I do hope the new mid-pack coach has a lot of success at PU....much better than his 40 and 33 record at two lesser programs

So, then you should be happy as we got someone who has a winning record and has won at the P5 level even and that was probably before he completely knew what he was doing.

I think he deserves more credit than that and wouldn’t call this settling. He took over two programs that were in bad spots and put them in the + side of the win column. So if anything he could help us get out of shitville. We are coming off of a 1-11 season. If in his first 3 years he does what he did at Mizzou 4, 7 and 8 wins….I’d say that’s remarkable progress given the current state and schedules we have.

Checking the portal, he doesn't have a lot to bring with him. Out of 17 of his players entering the portal, only seven are left. I'd think it's easier for a coach to win at Mizzou and UNLV than at Purdue.

I thought I saw he was expected to be at $3.75m with the whole package. And there was some thought if he waited another year he might have some better options so I suspect it will be closer to $6m.

Im just not sure who was out there, and I read a lot of lists from the “experts”. The reach coaches that came up were Iowa State and Arizona State and neither was leaving for Purdue in its current state. Perhaps that’s what you mean by settling and I get it. However, among the small schools we got a guy that has a resume that’s a step above WKU coach that I’d expected AND I think that’s a good thing considering BoBos last off script hire

Yes, the SEC is so much easier than the BIG and Mizzou is such a historically better program on top of it.

Campbell comes up in every coaching search, every year for every team. Dude is not leaving Iowa State at this point I am not even sure a Blue Blood could pull him.

As for the portal, his plane touched down a day ago and he probably spent most of today addressing our team and current gaps. It’s day 1 so we have zero clue how he will go about it. Gotta give it time and it’s just nice to have a coach in place rather than fall behind. UNLV was horrendous prior to his arrival and he took them to back to back bowl games for the first time in program history.

Why would it be easier to win in MizzU in the SEC with football?
