Josh Hansen is OC

Hansen's had success. Been part of some top offenses, been around some great head coaches and players. Im not sure who else we would have gotten. Seems like a solid hire especially with an offensive line background which we really need help with.

This also means we'll likely have a dedicated QB coach.

Yeah, I mean when was the last time anybody got real excited about a OC hire anywhere?

Probably could have done better. Most likely could have done way worse. Hoping that once the staff is in place some of these rumored flips and commits start to happen
I was actually super excited with the Graham Harrel hire. I was like "Home Run! Grand Slam! Welcome back to basketball on grass meets air raid!"
That didn't work out so well.....

I agree 💯 I was excited thinking of Mike Leach offenses and slinging the ball around. Amazing how Harrell offense looked nothing close to Air Raid to which he played and coached in that offense.

It is what it is. Purdue is not going to pay for or attract elite coaches or assistant coaches. The same applies to the recruits we will be able to sign via the portal or flip from commitments. We’re not going to steal elite players from teams like OSU, Michigan Oregon . I guess we should get excited about flipping a 2 star and a player from the football powerhouse Akron. Signing 3 star QBs will be the future norm.

It is what it is.

After reading up on Henson I’ll say it’s a safe solid hire. The guy has 25yrs of coaching experience at pretty big programs so hopefully that helps. I don’t know what kind of offense he will bring to Purdue but maybe Odom knows something us fans don’t 🤷🏼‍♂️.

USC fans are upset that Lincoln Riley isn’t winning more games and the transfer portal is hitting them in the face so they start to play the blame game and thats when Hensons name gets thrown in there for not being a good OLine coach. A lot of fans say it’s not his fault and the other half say the O Line is horrible blah blah so you got to take fans opinions with a grain of salt.

What assistant coaches did you think were coming here?

Ones employed at blue bloods?

And if so, ask yourself why?

i read the comments, i see where Henson is not a home run hire, we could have done better, etc etc. No one knows what will happen, from what Odom has done the last few years , i think he knows what coaches will help team get better and win.
That’s just it. Odom has been hugely successful these past two seasons in Large part to an OC who’s unique, innovative offense that will look nothing like what Odom will have at Purdue.

It comes down to this - Did we hire Odom because of the success of UNLV? If so, we’re not actually getting that guy here. Or did we hire someone with a Defensive background to hopefully build a staff and get back to 7+ wins like he did at Missouri..?

The 2 things aren't mutually exclusive are they?

Odom will be a huge improvement over Walters. So would the guy ringing people up at the gas station.

But it appears Bobinski is looking strangely like Burke as a football hiring AD

Except while Burke got his disaster last going from tiller to hope to hazell, Bobinski got his in the middle with brohm, Walters then Odom… who did great at UNLV but won’t be bringing the offensive genius with him to Purdue. It looks like we are getting a meh offensive line guy as the OC.

Not sure Odom isn’t a poor man’s Bielemas. Man, I’ve rarely looked at what Illinois had and thought “yeah, that’s better.” Woof.

Poor man’s? He’s making 6mil up to more than 7. Cmon.

I get not being immediately excited about it but I gave Walters a chance at least before it was painfully obvious he was in over his head.

I think I'll trust Coach Odom's judgement over yours here. You were initially in absolute love with the Walters hire, clearly not the best judge of coaching talent.

I meant in terms of ability.

Sure he gets a chance. No one cares what posters on a free board think.

But I see what I fear coming and blame Walters. Because Walters was so bad he had to be fired now, Odom probably wins 5-6. Then revenue sharing parameters that make Purdue much more attractive to coaches will come out. But Purdue won’t get to make that better hire cause everyone will say “can’t let a guy go after one 5 win season.” Then he will go 6-6 and 5-7 and be fired.

The alternative is Walters was just bad and not horrific, got fired after next season and coaches who would laugh at us now would have actually picked up the phone next year.

I wasn’t in love with the Walters hire. I defended him because I always believed that no one wanted this job once NIL ramped up. I’m still waiting on what Jeff brohm like candidates they turned down to hire offensive coordinator Walters.

I didn’t expect any great assistants or coaches or transfer players to ever come to Purdue. I believe I’ve said that multiple times. I believe I’ve said Purdue is NOT an attractive place for name coaches or players!

That’s why I say it is what it is.

My hopes and expectations are not very high.

At least this guy has worked with Odom before.

USC at one time attracted the best linemen in the country. That has not been the case in the last 5 years. It seems odd their recruiting is down particularly with the knowledge they have a lot of NIL money they can spend.

I can understand why USC fans are a tad upset and frustrated with the product they are seeing on the field. Going 6-6 is not a great return for the money they have been paying their athletes above and under the table. Some their recent losses have been very questionable.

I admit I was excited at Walter’s hires for assistant coaches. They had both experience and previous success. But many posters raised red flags about some of their coaching flaws.

But as it turned out, Walter’s assistants did not communicate with each other or Walter’s very well. They were each in their own bubble.

That’s why it is more important to bring in a coach with his entire staff than bringing in a coach and having him pick coaches off of 5-10 different teams.

I would welcome coaches who have worked with Odom over coaches who may have a better reputation for success.

There are always exceptions. I would hire any offensive line coach from Iowa or Wisconsin without questions or reservation.

Purdue doesn’t need to pass for over 5,000 yards to win games. What they need is some continuity and communication between coaches, player development, And some consistency and focus.

Players didn’t leave Purdue because of the NIL. They left because they wanted to play for a winning team.

I got mixed feelings about this one after seeing USC fans happy to see him go……looks like him and Odom have a history, hopefully he can prove the doubters wrong!

What do you guys think of the hire?
Trying to stay positive but every time a watched usc play their qb got his head beat in. Hoping they can get a few guys to come with him...lb, wr, ol, dl, qb, pretty much anyone.

Agreed
They averaged 450 yds a game this season - almost 300 yds passing and 150 on the ground, while scoring nearly 30 pts a game.
If that’s bad, I’ll take it.
Yes to this! Great balance!
USC offense also lead the BigTen in passing yards a game and ranked 3rd in total yards but their defense was really bad and ranked towards the bottom 25% of the BigTen for yards given up so I don’t think it’s hard to figure out what side of the ball was the problem.

I like the hire because he previously worked with Odom on a sec team. Unlike Walters and his assistants, they seem to be on the same page

USC couldn't wait to get rid of this guy. Sounds like him leaving avoided getting fired. Interesting article about him on Trojan Wire.

B.S. USC's offense averaged 440 yards and 30 points per game this year. The offense wasn't the issue. Secondarily, Riley is the play caller. This was Henson's chance of being an OC that calls the plays.

If anything, this is also Henson's way of jumping from a burning ship. If Riley doesn't win big next year, he's probably gone.
