Barry Odom to Purdue. I understand the concerns about him needing a good OC. Let's hope he could bring his current OC Marion with him. He seems to have a good eyes for this. A good coordinator will eventually want to be the head guy somewhere so this goes both ways. I think this is a pretty good hire.

also think it's a pretty good hire, had him higher than Helton, Monken, and Martin

If he can keep Browne around and bring his OC, next year could be interesting.

I think this is a pretty good hire. Hopefully he can bring his staff. We’re going to have to pay up for them, especially Marion. I’m afraid UNLV will just give him the head job.

Now let’s start looking at their roster to see who we want. Lol

Did we hire him because of his extensive Defensive experience and connections from his tenure at Missouri? Fine. Did we hire him because of the success at UNLV? That only works if he brings Brennan Marion with him for multiple years, the way Tiller had Chaney…

Larry Korpitz was the real mastermind of the offense but lost a battle with cancer before he got to coach here.

I have thought about it. They probably both realize how weird that would be but I could see Walters back at some point.

Walters was a good DB coach. Hasnt been much more than that.
Can’t be this soon. I think he CAN recruit. I think he probably knows something about coaching DBs. I think the way he handled it all and never really adjusted and acted like it was the players and not him was too much for the fan base.

He clearly lost the team. Don’t know why you’d want him back so quick.

as a DC no way, as a DB coach OK ( would help bring back some of the DB's lost to portal)

I don't think he was bad as a DC, last year he took over calling the D and it did improve. This year, because of the mess on offense he was forced to focus there and the D suffered. That's also completely sums up Walters problem as a head coach, he was horrible at hiring a competent staff.

They did coach together at Missouri, lol this would be pretty funny if it happened, would I be opposed? Not really, I think we have some good young DB talent that Walters would help.

Seems like a safe hire. I think there were guys with higher ceilings and lower floors but Bobinski was probably scarred from that last hire to do that again.

I realize the OC is a factor but at least it shows Odum can identify coordinator talent, something Walters couldn’t. If he doesn’t come with, Odum at least should know what he’s looking for in an OC with a bigger budget to boot.

Anyone know if the QB he recruiting from Arkansas (Odom) is any relation? Looks like his DL coach has a freshman with same last name also being recruited (DL-Henderson,NV)

I thought he was the best choice of what I considered realistic. I never could really wrap my mind around some of the names speculated. The coaches from places like Liberty, Memphis, Tulane, or Iowa State were never going to come here imo.

Odom was the one I could see why he would want this job. I don't know what we are going to end up paying him but I think his salary at UNLV was under 2 million a season. He's coached in a power conference before and probably wants to get back to one but since he was let go at Missouri he probably would never jump from UNLV up to a top tier B1G or SEC type job. If he can do great things at Purdue, those opportunities might come around. Also, his resources at Purdue will be more than what he had at UNLV. I don't know what UNLV would've done against our schedule this year, but I trust it would have been better than 1-11. Finally, the expectations here are not unrealistic. If he can do at Purdue what he did at Missouri, he will be closer to getting a statue built for him than he will to be getting let go.

He was probably in my top three or so behind the coaches at Liberty and Memphis. I think it's a good hire. Hopefully he can retain a few of the better players who have entered the portal and bring a few of his guys along with him.

He'll make us better immediately. I'd like to see him bring his current offensive coordinator, but even if he doesn't hopefully he'll at least bring the system.

21-17 his last 3 yrs at Mizzo with 3 bowls. Certainly not going to get you fired at Purdue.

Not that it matters much, but it worked out pretty well the last time Purdue tapped the WAC/MWC for a guy with with a good-but-not-great record as a head coach.

I'll even throw in that Tiller lost his last game at Wyoming in the WAC championship.

Not that Walter's would accept it, but if Purdue moved him to DB coach and lead recruiter, would they still have to pay him all his payout?

People the head coach for a major program is the CEO of football. They don't need to know everything. But they do need to hire the right people to be successful. Odom has shown he could do that. Any successful coordinator will want to be head college someday. That's just how it works. Overall I think this a good hire considering the dumpster fire we had in the last couple of years. Boiler Up.

And if we’re hiring him build a staff in-general and work from there, that’s fine. If we’re hiring him based largely on his Top 25 UNLV success and the aim is to duplicate that here, however, that’s due to the offense Marion created & it doesn’t work without him. We should learn very quickly which version we’re getting…

FWIW I just saw a post on the UNLV forum where someone confidently stated 6.6m and 5 years (33m guaranteed) for anyone curious about contract deets. Not sure who their source was so take it how you will. It doesn’t seem too outrageous for an experienced coach taking a gig in the B1G.
