2025 Transfer portal thread

All for whatever CMP wants, he certainly knows what he's doing. Be happy to have a new stud on the roster. Very happy. Videos look great, but that's all offense. But let's see if he can play B10 D before we anoint him a starter. Might be, but let's have patience and see?
You could be right, Painter likes his defense. Wondering how much the defense matters though if your top 3 options are all American type players and you had Loyer as a 4th option.

90+ points a game. Defend the paint. You’d win a lot of games

Why would you even post this if you just wiffed on Barnhizer? Sounds like Barnhizer was never even entering the portal
Several reports say that he did in fact enter the portal. Some say he shut it down before the possibility. Either way, he's not now, and it's up to speculation as to whether or not a waiver denial was part of it.

Haven't heard much about Kennard Davis Jr. recently, until this weekend. Apparently he's visiting Ohio State. Hopefully his visit was a complete, utter disaster.

Loyer has earned his starting role and continues to earn it. One of the top shooters in the country, draws a ton of charges, doesn't' foul a lot, plays decent defense and make the entire team better.
Yes he is a great shooter, plays below average defense and is slow. The weakest of our starting 5 but does give stability with his shooting
If Omer Mayer is a done deal, this would implicate a few things:

1) we most likely lose Gicarri Harris. He was rumored to go anyways and with someone else ahead of him, he’s likely elsewhere

2) we have our secondary ball handler and sharp shooter, and most likely Smith’s replacement at PG for 2026-2027. If Harris could be convinced to stick. We would have a Mayer/Cox/Harris backcourt for 2026

3) this would be Matt Painters best assembled team at Purdue

1) Smith
2) Mayer
3) Loyer
4) TKR
5) Cluff / Jacobsen

Bench:
1) Cluff / Jacobsen
2) Cox
3) Burgess
4) Benter
5) West
6) Harris (unlikely to stay)

And I’m sure we add something else portal wise. Not sure how I would even approach the portal with this add.

4) we should be the undisputed pre season #1 and Big Ten favorite.
Benter and West ahead of Harris , you SERIOUS ? And Cox starts
If he wants a true title shot he should play 30 until February. We could all see his legs were rubber and his middie was history.

If he and Paint want to push it up to 35 come March - by all means

I think one thing we are all forgetting is defense. Harris and Cox will get minutes due to ability to pick ball up full court. Harris could also get assignment of other teams best guy.

Painter likes to play 3 gaurds. That is 5 guys for 120 mins. I think one of Cox or Harris need to be on court at all time for defensive reasons. Do not know how good Mayer is on D, but if he eats into anyone's minutes it might be Loyer?
This is key I didn't see Meyer play much defense in the Nike Classic yesterday. He didn't move well without the ball and he missed every shot and threw the ball away several times. You can see the raw talent is there and it was an all star game so it's not a fair comparison but Harris and Cox both are completelt different players with in your face defense that doesn't stop. Meyer is not that guy.

He is a less polished Braden Smith and won't start. He will learn a ton from Braden though and will improve as he becomes part of a system and gains chemistry with his teammates. He isn't a threat to Cox or Harris. At least not from what I saw

My personal opinion is, if a player of his caliber is going to leave the EuroLeague and go to school in the USA, and is from Israel, that he’s not going to chose Purdue if he or Painter thinks he’ll be behind Harris on the depth chart next year. He could be a featured player at Auburn who is also interested.

I think the allure of coming here would be, playing with Smith for a year, being on the best team in the country, and then take over for Smith the next year. He could have his choice of most schools at this point. We have a unique selling point for his skill set right now.
If you listen to Sleepers when they discuss Omer, they think that if we were to sign him, he would be at worst the 3rd option. What I've seen of him, I tend to agree. At least the perception is that he's ahead of Harris. That doesn't mean that Harris won't get minutes or that Harris isn't going to improve, but from what I've seen, I'd put Omer at a different level than Harris at least offensively.

I think waiver was denied
Could be, Barnhizer is a dope if that’s the case. Leaving if he gets it, bleeding purple

once again, I listed Harris last because I feel like he moves on, the bench wasn’t a hearchy

Yeah, I don’t think anyone on here is nearly high on them, as they seemed to be. We keep talking about needing a guard that can make his own shot, a secondary ball handler, and we see a potential international superstar, and we start talking about if he can handle defense in the big ten.

Our defense was not good this year and we could have made the final four. Cold shooting was our downfall.

Loyer still isn’t great defensively, Braden is relatively short, TKR can get in foul trouble too quickly. We get Jacobsen back, add Cluff, have the ability to guard the basket potentially next year, now we’re more concerned about perimeter defense from our 3. If the kid makes our offense unguardable and keeps us out of extended cold steaks, I will take some questionable defense.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I came away with a different impression of Mayer. I actually thought he looked pretty good defensively. Strong base, moves well laterally and for the most part, kept his man out of the paint. Offensively, the only time the world team had any ball movement was when initiated the offense. Otherwise, nothing but ISO hero ball. I'm not worried about his shooting. I know he can shoot. My sense is that he was willing to play the role of distributor for the world team because somebody had to, but there is much more to his game. Assuming he commits, I guess we'll see when he gets into a structured system.

Right. If it was a requirement to be a plus defender before you could play, Loyer would've been on the bench the past 3 years and again next year. I don't think Omer is being sought after to just warm the bench and learn from Braden in exchange for future mins. It's all in for a championship and Omer is being seen as a key part in our coaches eyes, no doubt.

Mayer would make 11 deep, with West and Benter 10/11…….

Other portal possibilities wouldn't see starting PT or much at all unless a total package 6-6/7”wing

I think Harris is very happy at Purdue and he'll be back next year as will Cox, both of which will play extended minutes. Do we really need anyone else?
He was homesick and was close to leaving…
A 6’6-6’8 shooter who can go get a bucket would be a very nice addition.

I think if you get a chance to add another stud, in Braden, TKR, and Loyers senior year, with the Final Four in Indianapolis and most likely the best team on paper in the country……you do it. And you don’t shy away from it because you have Gicarri Harris and Cox. No disrespect to either.

I just watched the one game and he was all distributor while everyone else tried to make highlight reels. If anything he didn't feel the need to be the star and just brought the ball up and setup his teammates. That doesn't mean he doesn't have the ability so I'd love to see more. That was a limited sample size and almost certainly the wrong place to showcase his talents

That's why I'm really not understanding the 15-scholarship thing, and that I don't see it really happening except by granting a scholly to what would have previously been a true walk-on.

I dont see where all this that harris could leave if or when mayer signs i mean mayer and harris i think can play together
Yah I know, my take goes against the popular belief that Loyer is safe and will always start and play big minutes. My take is that maybe just maybe Mayer poses just as big a threat to Loyers playing time as he does to either Cox or Harris. If Mayer comes as promised/anticipated, his shot likely rivals Loyers. His play making off the dribble and his passing ability exceeds Loyer, both of the other two could likely as well especially if they make a sophomore leap. He and Cox and Harris appear quicker. Defensively we are still unsure but very possibly might be better than Loyer on an individual man to man basis. Both of the other two are too. He is a better ball handler, as are both Harris and Cox…

My point is I think you could see him cut into Loyers time as well and not strictly limit the other two. A combination with either Cox or Harris could in theory be a stronger combination with better on ball pressure D and ball handling.

No I’m not saying Loyer doesn’t play, isn’t important or good, or even doesn’t necessarily start. I’m saying if Cox, Harris, Benter, West offer more two way upside which is not really that far fetched, Painter might limit Fletcher a bit in favor of his alternatives to put the best team on the floor. Loyer will definitely get his PT, but it might be less than he’s used to and many of us expect.

That’s IF indeed Mayer chooses Purdue over the other big time options he likely has. So, we wait and see…

Another thought is what if any affect does a Mayer signing have on the recruitment of a top 15 point guard we are currently reportedly doing well with like Taylen Kinney? Can the coaches manage to snag them both by selling playing together?

We may lose Kinney but 2nd year Mayer or another transfer guard may be more ready than Kinney. We also have Ertel coming in at PG next year who is absolutely killing it. But tbh, it’s the nature of the beast now.

Much rather go all in now and worry about next year later.

Not sure why you have Harris as bottom of the bench. We have no idea if Mayer is good enough to immediately start. Your pecking order is specious.
I think we’ll get 1 more sink or swim season from Harris, if patient he’ll be a day 1 starter his Jr season, all up to him.

Yes. Painter always leans on experienced guys over new ones unless they are phenomenal talent. Mayer might be but until he is in practice - we have no clue. I think based on both he and Harris’ size, they can in theory play 1-3.

One thing I hope for 25/26 season - Smith’s minutes come down to 30 minutes v 38/39 range. Save that dudes legs.
Agreed on Braden’s minutes, 30-32 is perfect, plus it frees up some minutes for other guys.

Looks like Mayer is following the whole team and vice versa…..it’s looking good.

Also hearing that we shouldn’t be concerned about missing on some of these 4’s as Painter and staff have some other stuff in the works. No idea who but we will add experienced
I watched Saunders quite a bit, wasn’t hoping for him, not sure on the Delaware kid except that he averaged 2 ppg the year before last. Hoping for Kennard Davis or perhaps the ND kid who’s name escapes me, haven’t been up on it though, are they still out there? Davis and Mayer in my opinion makes for an excellent offseason. I did wish Heide stuck around, however, how often did we complain about both of he and Colvin disappearing in games? I do wish both well, both seem like great kids!

Tae Davis is the ND kid you’re thinking of. Not sure if we were involved or not.

I kind wish we Cam stuck around but that’s life.

I like the idea of adding Mayer and Srzentic (not sure if I spelled that right) as both should be around for a while. That would put the roster in great shape.

While Cam played better towards end of season neither him or Colvin lived up to expectations. I watched them this year and they often stood in the 3 pt area " watching" the game, given what's in the portal I feel we can upgrade and will need to if we are going to make a serious run. We need a wing who is athletic, plays D and and can drive with the basketball.....wish them both the best .

Thought the same thing about Saunders, wasn’t really impressed. The Delaware kid was a gamble after the year he just had compared to past years. I don’t know if Tae Davis was even considering Purdue but he picked Oklahoma the other day so he’s off the table. Not sure where Purdue stands with Kennaed Davis but he is visiting Ohio St so…..
Good luck to Mr. Heide but man I wish he would have stuck around so the portal shopping continues!

We have 4 Player that can play the 4, not sure where the extra minutes come from in the 4/5 rotation. Benter is that much shorter that Cam, can also jump, shot, but also pass. Cam never played his height, he was a small 4.... If we go small Benter can play in a 4 guard lineup.

Just not seeing where a 4 gets time over who we got TKR is going to want to play 30 unless he get in foul trouble.

Tae Davis committed to Oklahoma.

I know anything can happen and portal is still open. But heard gicarri is staying and if not, he’d be a bit behind in the portal if he declared now. But of course, he always could. Paint typically tries to help his guys out and wants them to get out in the portal as soon as possible to get the best deal/situation for themselves.
Gicarri is going to be a star in two years and will probably be a 10 plus year pro...
