Minnesota at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, the Minnesota Golden Gophers (15-8; 6-6) visit Mackey Arena to take on the #2-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (22-2; 11-2). Tip is scheduled for approximately 8:30 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on the Big Ten Network.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Minnesota - Pharrel Payne, Dawson Garcia, Elijah Hawkins, Mike Mitchell, Jr., and Cam Christie

Purdue - Zach Edey, Trey Kaufman-Renn, Lance Jones, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

This is the only regular season meeting between the two schools. Minnesota has outperformed expectations in conference this season so far, but they are coming off a disappointing finish @ Iowa over the weekend where they squandered a big lead in the second half in route to a 90-85 loss. An injury to leading scorer Dawson Garcia, which limited his action, was a big factor in that game. Purdue has won eight straight with the last win coming at home against Indiana last Saturday night.

Garcia's status and effectiveness after his groin injury is a big key to Minnesota having a realistic chance to pull the big upset. He leads Minnesota with 17.3 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. He has a good touch and can shoot from long range when necessary - had a season-high of 36 coming against Ohio State. Cam Christie is the Gophers' top scorer from the perimeter - a freshman guard adding 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. Christie has scored 15 or more in each of his last four games. Mike Mitchell Jr. is another scoring option in the backcourt. Elijah Hawkins is a 5'11 junior running the point for Minnesota, and he leads the entire nation in assists with 7.6 per game while scoring 8.3 points. Minnesota is quite capable of going on scoring bursts and can hit triples in bunches if Purdue has any defensive breakdowns. Expect Lance Jones to cover Cam Christie, who is making a late push for conference freshman honors.

Minnesota is currently ranked 77th overall according to KenPom. They rank 93rd in offensive efficiency and 63rd in defensive efficiency. The Gophers play at the 234th-fastest tempo in college hoops, which is a slower pace than Purdue.

As with most games, look for Purdue to try and establish Zach Edey in the low post, and if Garcia is limited, that will put even more pressure on Payne. It will be interesting to see how much pick and roll the Boilers run tonight. It will also likely be the same keys for the Boilers - work for good looks, take advantage of the 3-pt line when they can, work the glass, and try to limit turnovers to single digits. If Purdue shoots like they usually do, the Boilers should be in pretty good shape. They'll need a focused effort tonight - Minnesota is capable of causing some problems, and a win tonight would really bolster any post-season chances.

Can the Boilers keep things rolling to a 9th straight win? We shall see, starting in a little more than a couple hours.

Boiler up, my friends....

Lord, let tonight's game occur without injury to any player, give travel mercies to Miinesota as they return home, give the referees wisdom to control the game but not the outcome. Give the Paint Crew extraordinary volume to energize the team and throw off all visitors. In your mighty name.

Is there an alternative or do we have to sit through this long ending first?
