Another solid game for Loyer last night. I have felt this for a while, but as the season progresses I find myself becoming more and more convinced that how Loyer plays is a huge key to how successful Purdue will be this season. We know that we can count on Edey. Smith has emerged as a force which is hard to deny. Jones brings great defense and fight. TKR and Gillis are emerging as a great tandem at the 4. Yet, to me it is Loyer who is the difference maker. When he is playing well, defenses are put in a bind because they are already focused on taking away Edey and Smith and Loyer is that third multi-dimensional scorer who can hurt you in so many ways.

The issue with him is consistency. It’s really hard to know which Loyer will show up on a given night. Yet, as the season goes on, I feel like Loyer is gaining confidence and when he is confident, his skills shine through.

He seemed to hit the wall last year and the physicality of the Big Ten season seemed to get to him. But, this season I feel like I am seeing the opposite with his confidence growing as the season goes on. I hope I am right, because I think that when Loyer is at his best, Purdue is probably the best team in the country.

The curl/dribble drive has become Loyer and Smith's best friend and I'm glad they are utilizing it. Zach just brings so many opportunities for this group.

Encouraging sure. Hopefully consistent performances continue against B10 opponents. Shooting 39.3% from 3 is also encouraging as well as getting to the rim.

Loyer has been solid this year...his numbers are similar to last through the same amount of games. Hopefully, he can continue this type of production into 2024 and through March…which I think he will.

Also, I will continue to say that as long as 2 of the 3 guards have good games, we are tough to beat. Obviously if all 3 do well, along with edey, we arent losing many games.

I don't think it's a question of him showing up on a given night as much as it is he can still be taken out of his game by defenses that he's physically overmatched against. But he's learning and not getting taken out of rhythm nearly as much. He's never going to do his work with the ball, creating a shot. He has to do his work before he touches the ball, getting open. Zach creates tremendous opportunities for Fletcher both with his scoring and his unmovable object picks. Same with Gillis and Furst and TKR getting better. Some Boiler shooters of the past could only dream of having one of those guys setting picks for them.
A third (good) scoring option gets you into the discussion of good teams.
4 gets you into the top 10ish teams. If TKR keeps coming? And one of the 5 is the returning NPOY......
you might just be on to something.

His traditional stats look similar, but his usage is a little down from last year and he’s making up for it with better efficiency. Effectively, he’s gone from the #2 option to the #3 option, which I think has served him well. Even though he’s the #3 option, he has shown a willingness and ability to be opportunistic and take over the game when needed.

Not sure I completely agree. I think he does some good work with the ball coming off of screens when he can get an angle.

mostly gets the ball in motion of the play happening. Not dribbling into it as much as Braden does.
Sure, but he’s been far from just a catch and shoot specialist. He’s shown the ability to turn an initial advantage on the perimeter into a very effective drive several times this season, especially in the Tennessee and Arizona games.

Absolutely, and those 2 teams are ones you would think would not allow that to happen.

Just change the "many" to "any" at the end of your post.

Like against the teams where he actually was. You can create your own narrative as you see fit.
Who specifically would you say shut him down this season by physically overwhelming him? Serious question, I’m just not seeing it. AZ and TN were two of the more physical defenses, both in general and with Fletcher and he obviously responded very well.

I don't know of any team that "shut him down". That being said, there were several games where Loyer just didn't generate the offense seen in other games. Does that equate to "shutting him down" or Loyer having a poor shooting night?

Defensively, I think Loyer struggles with fast, aggressive offensive players but I'm not sure there is anyone who wouldn't struggle against such a player.

My only concern with Loyer is that he gets knocked down a lot so I feel some strength training for him would help.

Did fine vs Arizona with 4 steals…probably his best all around game at Purdue. He falls down, but doesn’t seem to impact him much.

He has shown up whenever we have needed him so far…except the Bama game. I would say it’s him having a poor shooting night (so far this year). He doesn’t need to show up every single night if the 2 others guards do.

Loyer will need great games against IL the 3 times we play them this season. Hopefully, an extra year of maturity will help.

Goode being there might add extra juice to his game, as Goode outplayed him last year where Loyer had a no-show 4pt game.

Maaaan. Loyer has shown up when we have needed him all year, until he proves otherwise, I am going to have faith in fletch that he will be up for the challenge!
