Isaiah in the portal

There was really only 1 name on the list and it's been taken care of. Now, if Painter doesn't go find 2 guards in the portal, that's a different story.
What if he finds 2, but they're both 6 foot 165. You going to trash them before they ever play a game?

Depends. Are they elite athletes? If they're built like Carsen Edwards with that athleticism and shooting ability, then bring em on.

It doesn't bum me at all. It's the game we have now with open transferring. Either you get with it and use it or you are going to get left behind. I'm hoping this just reinforces what some of us thought already, get a PG from the portal for next year. I really like our roster next year if it includes a strong guard from the portal. We only need 1 good year from that guy and we are set the following season at guard.

Happy for IT, but Painter’s history in these situations is not good. I assume we will be ransacking the roster of SW Austin State to find a defensive specialist. Hope I’m wrong, but CMP just does not understand the position.

Which part isn't good? the transfer portal? John Octeus was a good get and understanding the PG position he was okay with CE right? He also is recruiting well in that area going forward.

I think what has changed is the game as whole at the PG spot and now he just needs to recruit for it. Hunter while having some lapses for a bit, was a good PG in the end.

I think most underestimate how hard it is to recruit good guards. Every team wants the best and for whatever reasons, most aren't attracted to Purdue.

I disagree about Hunter. Hunter would have been a pretty good shooting/scoring guard. But, he does not have the handles or quickness to be a good PG.

Nah, I hear the National powerhouses of St. Peter’s, N Texas and Little Rock might have some guards Painter can use

Okay we'll just disagree then, he did fine the latter part of the season. Doesn't matter anymore anyway since he isn't coming back.

I thought Hunter did a great job the latter half of the year. Even though he wasn't recruited as point guard, he did a tremendous job taking that role this year. And he hit open shots when he had the opportunity.

So that’s a bummer. He was a good shooter and efficient complement to the higher-volume, higher-profile players. 42% 3-pt shooter this season with nearly a 2-1 asst/TO ratio (not quite as high as his brother, but he did some other things well too). You need a Thompson on the team who protects the ball and makes the most of their limited shots. Even if he was in a shooting drought, such things are just temporary streaks.

Best of luck to him.
I haven't taken the time to count the players on scholly, but I know that playing more than 8 gets a bit iffy for many coaches and there is always value for those that help in practice, get a few minute, but never disrupt the chemistry damaging those that do get a lot of minutes. I wish him well. What it tells me is the Isiah and/or Matt think there are a couple of good guards coming in next year...and a potential portal transfer as well.

His shooting did fall of the rails in Big Ten games (.345 vs. .436 overall, .318 vs. .424 on threes). Familiarity breeds contest. But he shot less than three times a game in conference play, hit 77 percent when he did get to the line and blew opponents’ minds whenever he connected from deep, thinning defenses. And playing 37 games, he had only 17 turnovers all season with twice as many assists, taking better care of the ball than anyone else. That is sure to be missed.
ya know you read the "taking care of the ball" and your mind turns to turnover problems...but many of those were Zach being a bit slow and not strong with the ball and Trevion passing to where nobody was or to the other team

You should learn to listen to me. I'm usually right about these things. Was calling it last year in fact.
I called it when he signed and said the same about Sasha! To the dismay of many here who resorted to being defensive and name calling. This team has badly needed a pg to run our team and that pg needs to also be able to play defense and be over 6 feet tall. Instead of going after more 5 star centers, it’s way past time we recruited and signed an actual point guard rather than another shooter! Rather than shooters, we badly need somebody who can handle the ball and also handle a press. IT was never that player

This says it all. For some reason all of the best and pure point guards do not want to play for Painter. Perhaps Painter needs to examine his offense and change it and start going with an offense that is guard oriented and what other teams use!

Well, Jaden did lead the team individually with 94 turnovers in 37 games, but Trevion and Zach combined for 143. Take that away and … oops, they did.

Seriously? This guy is a 37% shooter from the field, 30% from 3, and 66% from the FT line for his career.

He’s 6-4, had some big games late in the year, can pass and rebound the ball. All I said if I heard from a reliable source that he would like to come to Purdue, I never said that Painter was interested, he might not be.

Always seems strange when fans can't spell the names of players in their favorite team.
Couisnard, my bad, he played at South Carolina, they aren’t my favorite team. All I heard is that he would like to play at Purdue, his mom is ill, maybe it’s a fit maybe it’s not. Geez, just throwing a name out there, relax.

Isaiah.

When IT was first recruited out of high school the experts here said he was a shooting guard in high school who could also handle the ball. He was not a pg! Painter tried to transform him into a pg that could shoot because he already had plenty of shooting guards. The same could be said with Edwards, Hunter and Ivey and every other guard that Painter has recruited. He recruits shooters and hopes his motion offense will compensate for their lack of point guard skills. We have not had a real floor general in a very long time. And every year that deficiency is exposed in the tourney.

It has been said that many baseball teams are built for the long season and not the playoffs. The Yankees and Brewers are two examples! Their teams are talented but not constructed to win a short playoff series. The same is true with Purdue under Painter. He constructs teams that will always win 20 games in the regular season but are not constructed to be competitive in the tournament! I don’t even get upset anymore. Until Painter changes his philosophy, what you just saw is the expected outcome.

Painter tried to make IT something he was not. He did the same with Hunter! Maybe one day Painter will recruit and sign an elite pg rather than another shooter.

Got some problems when three people considered the better players average 6.4 turnovers a game that easily could be 8 (4X2) to 12 (4X3) points a game. Then what is the effective turnover rate in missing Fts by Zach and Trevion. I'm not trying to dismiss the many good things they do, but it isn't all good. Just imagine the coaching crapshoot of wanting Trevion in for a critical bucket towards the end and him getting fouled...which was fairly recent. Again, I'm only trying to point out some problems that existed and nto denigrating any of these players that contributed so much to so many wins

IT didn’t fail Purdue. Purdue and Painter failed him by not utilizing his skills.

something not being talked about. I suspect this will have a trickle effect on his brother

Or.. neother "failed" the other and IT lost confidence after Iowa and never got it back. It's not talked about because it didn't happen.

Also, you couldn't play the 3 of them at the same time ever. Very strange roster construction. We won 29 games so obviously there was a lot of good. But still hard to not have your best 3 on the floor the majority of the time.
