Indiana at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Heide and Colvin on the Aaron Wheeler training plan. Two of our best ever athletic talents and Fletcher Loyer is our best slasher.
This is such a depressing take because it is so true. Colvin has done nothing since ole miss and heide has been scrappy but hasn't done anything significant since texas a&m. Both look like post-frosh Aaron Wheeler. I think they will bounce back but not until next year as they are adjusting this year to how Purdue will play post Edey. Both need to get in the gym and work on handles and then focus on making shots under pressure. Also develop any type of offense beside being catch and shoot! Like offense is supposed to be fun. GO WORK ON IT! Develop a pull up/floater/attack the basket anything if your 3 pt shot is not falling. Purdue needs them both to develop in the worst way to make a big run next year.

Also too bad Mason didn’t stay. Doesn’t seem to be a fit with Duke at all. Well below his career norm in minutes. Assuming he would have stayed if it was known before hand that Catchings was leaving

Would have been extremely useful for this team
For the love of god let’s give this mason talk a rest.

While I agree, what do you guys ACTUALLY expect these guys to average from points and rebound and shooting %?

Do you guys understand how hard it is to just shoot 38%+ from 3 when you should 1-2 shots a game? Or go attack the rim when maybe that’s not your role and you’re told not to?

Just trying to put it out there that not all guys have to average 8 and 4 and shoot 50% from the floor. Painters system has role players next to his best players and that’s what those two are.

I thought Heide played well in spots tonight and he played hard. He added some much needed help. To Myles defense, he was still cheering from the bench, and I still attribute a lot to the HS competition he played being pretty weak.

Heide played 27 minutes and went 5 and 5 0-3 from 3. Getting 8-4 with those minutes should be a norm not the exception! He has more than enough minutes to contribute that on a regular basis. He is ice cold shooting since the A&M game. Colvin played 10 minutes and recorded nothing except 1 foul and 0-3 from 3. I want this team to be as good as it possibly can and these two need to hit their 3's when open. They both have been horrible shooting the ball or providing anything on offense in BIG play expect on lob dunks and the occasional offensive rebound by Heide.
Like I said I think they will work on their games toward what is needed now with Smith fully in control but probably wont come this season.

Nice to see someone being honest. At this time Colvin and Heidi are nothing more than role players. I know each player has a lot of fans here with real high expectations for both. But the reality is becoming obvious. And what happens next year when West arrives?

Sucks? Lol. Looking to next year.
Next year Purdue may be preseason #1.
With the NCAA tourney in Indy and TKR, Braden and Loyer all seniors... Add a true 5 who can hit the three (7'4" Jacobson) and Cox, Harris, Colvin and Heide.

Purdue is going to be top 5 all season long...

Half of IU's team is gone... if not graduating, transferring. Woodson will need to start over and he is a lame duck coach so recruiting will be much harder going forward.

What we are getting is a lot of variability with too many games where they give us 0-2 pts and 2-3 rebounds combined. Cox is a role player, and he's giving us more consistent play than they are, probably why he's starting and they aren't.

You're right it's hard to shoot a great percentage when you don't get a ton of shots. But today they shot 1-7. They should probably shoot better than that.

Colvin has had 0 or 1 pt in 8 out of the last 11 games
Heide done a little better but he's had 0-2 pts in 7 out of the last 11 games.

They each had 3 double digit games in our first 10 games, and only 1 between of the two of them in the last 12.
By comparison, Cox also had 3 double digit games in our first 10, but he's gone on to have 5 more in the last 12. He's also only had 0-2 pts in 5 of the last 11 games. Again, probably why he's starting.

Colvin is playing more minutes but both his 2 and 3 pt percentages are down from last season. He was as much a role player last season as this one. Same story with Heide.

By every metric, they've done less with more. I certainly am not calling for either of them to be anything but Boilers til they graduate, but they definitely are both in some sort of sophomore slump that I really hope they figure out a way to work out of.

Cool story bro. Indiana won't have Mike Woodson. That's good enough for me.

IU wanted this one. They were connected out there and Mbako, Galloway, Leal, Goode, Ballo were competing hard on both ends. I thought they would fold after Purdue took lead back and they didn't.

When Purdue can't hit their 3s the're going to struggle some. Colvin and Heide are slumping big time missing some wide open ones. If those start dropping again for those guys Purdue's ceiling goes up quite a bit. I hope they keep heads up and press through. TKR foul trouble doomed Purdue in 2nd half since they were ice cold from 3.

Is Myles Rice ok? With his cancer history I hope he is healthy. That last shot is never going to be foul on the road during last seconds. Text book D by CJ with hands vertical and no contact on shooters arm. Lower contact was minimal and initiated by shooter and was minor. From that little contact I don't see how he missed shot by 7 feet? Almost like he wasn't confident and was looking to pass in air or something......

IU’s 3 Indiana guys were clearly focused in this one. I think that rivalry games favor the underdog psychologically and IU played MUCH better than what I have seen in other games when I have had a chance to watch them this year.

I think that a lineup of Galloway, Leal, Goode, Mgbako, and Ballo could win IU a lot of games. Woody is playing the wrong guys from what I can tell. Mgbako is one of the most talented guys in the league, but he is much better at the 4 than the 3 to my eyes. He also plays off Ballo well, making it tough to bring help.

That all being said, Purdue had to earn this one. IU was playing like a Big Ten championship contender and was shooting the ball much better than Purdue on similar outside shots. Ballo was also a load that Purdue struggled to match up with and keep off the boards. Yet Purdue won and I point to several reasons: (1) points off of turnovers (which has been Purdue’s greatest strength in recent weeks) and (2) unbelievable offense by TKR, (3) Smith being Smith, (4) a really great all-around game from Harris, and (5) better ability to make plays in the last few possessions of the game. I don’t want to discount contributions from others, but those guys really stepped up in my opinion.

True Purdue did not play its best game of the year. But IU is not a terrible team and they do have some talent.

He is playing with nba players at his dream school and in a great atmosphere. He’s the 6th-7th guy off the bench. He was a great complement to Zach but wouldn’t be near as efficient this year as last. It would have been six years at Purdue. It was time to move on and let others develop.

Also, painter made him (as well as Ethan and Zach) decide if they were coming back for another at the start of last year. He knew Mason would be able to get paid at a good school and wanted him to be able to hit the portal (if that’s what he wanted) instantly to get the best deal possible. But he also said he would have taken all 3 back in a heartbeat but that had to decide before the season.

It was a good decision for both parties.
Mason would have loved to come back, I don’t usually bring the good intel bull into here, this is good intel, my best friends daughter ran in his circles. Coach had other guys like Colvin and Heide that needed minutes, if Mason returns maybe one of them leaves, nature of the game right now. Glad Gillis got a nice hook up at Duke, in hindsite it would at least been better for Purdue if he returned.

Having not seen it on TV it appeared to me that he was in fact leaning in a bit and Giccari may have got a finger on the ball...but I really need to see it up close and with a good angle.

Last night he would have moved some bodies on the boards even if he never got good looks. He would have set a physical tone in what appeared to be a bit physical on the boards.

@ about 4:38 of these highlights has the slo-mo, TJ....maybe some body contact, don't think it's a cylinder issue as Rice was leaning - tough to call anything there the end......it was the usual whistle city game, and I don't think either team was happy with the officiating.....a lot of inconsistency both ways to me.

Your buddy, Szelc and his sidekick Sirmons.....haha.

Hummel's call at the end I think is his tendency to not appear biased.....not exactly sure what he saw, but he is the expert color guy and really knows his stuff. TKR and Smith have to learn to avoid the cheap nickel/dimers - those were legit, IMO.

Agreed, in my opinion at least on this one Coach should have pushed harder in bringing back the Big Ten’s 6th man of the year for a 6th season. I have zero reason to question my source on this one, he would have returned if the push was on.

Fun game!

Definitely not a foul on Harris-good defense and would have been a terrible terrible call if they whistled it.

My Hoosiers did themselves proud, all while contributing toward the inevitable end of the Woodson era in 6 weeks.

IMO Purdue is solid-top 20-ish but flawed. Too much needed from two (outstanding) players and Loyer still gets pulled late game for defense. But they have a team identity, which is an excellent thing to have.

Cheers!

Good post, 100% agree. IU is more talented of the two, Woody is done very soon.

100% agree on Robbie. He's a great commentator but he does tend to go overboard on trying to appear unbiased. There was little contact on Harris (certainly less than had been going on all game) and the push off by Galloway that made him wide open Robbie was okay with. That said, there was a stretch where he was critical of Purdue and it was spot on.. like when no one was boxing out or other things that let IU score at will at times.

Still overall he still does a fantastic job and is a pleasure to listen to when he is commenting on games.

I've read several things where Matt has said that he would have taken both back if he was able. Moot point.. But on a tangent and I say this NOT to stir anything up... but it was noticeable that Berg got zero time last night while Burgess did. Just to me (and me alone) it feels like there is something going on there as Berg at leas is a big body .. maybe he just isn't progressing like Burgess is but I wouldn't be shocked if he moved on in the off season... again NOT trying to stir anything up and these things have already come up on this site anyway.

yeah tried to stop it at 4:38/4:39 and could not find any contact. It was interesting that it appeared Rice had his shooting hand on the side of the ball instead of under it as though he was going to pass it, but never saw anyone he could have passed it. Couldn't see Gicari's fingers get the ball and so it is a bit of a mystery how the ball appeared to be a block? I'd played on when IU players fell down in what appeared to be incidental legs maybe having contact very early in the game, but maybe they were trying to set a tone that the game would be called tight...where it wasn't inside. It did take 2 of Purdue main players that early to possibly hinder some effectiveness on their game.
Also there were some really late calls that in the stands you wondered what was being called since it seemed to be at least a second or two after a potential call. With three refs you now have three instead of two sources of variation and that gets compounded with rotations and such.

Purdue got a break on the shot by Rice. Definite foul on Harris. Rice was in the air before Harris lifted his arms. Harris moved his arms and body into Rice. I’m a Purdue fan, how does a player miss an 8-10 ft shot by 3 ft?

Agree that the officiating was inconsistent.

Agreed, I don’t think Berg returns next year which is fine, might be for the best if he moves down a level, foot speed is his problem in my opinion, guessing Waddell with a Purdue degree in hand plays a 5th year elsewhere as well.

Great W!

Why wouldn’t we want roster guys 11-15 to stay, Waddell, Berg, etc? If the rotation is 9, 10 max, why would a portal guy want to be 11-15 and be any better than the guys who are here and have been loyal?

Yes, one 5 with experience from portal would “you complete me” team for next year, but enjoy the other guys who are here👍

Cox is a ROLE player??? He is starting as a freshmen on a top 10 team! The team defense has taken off since he started! The kid can shoot, that is what was disappointing about last night, we needed to run some plays for him. 1 shot for him is not enough, the kid is going to be really good.

That game indicates the effect Jacobsen injury hurt Purdue. He would have stopped or definitely slowed down IU's layups. This is three years in a row that Woody has used his perimeter size to get in the lane and take advantage of Purdue lack of size. Give IU credit for how hard they played...something that hasn't been the case this year. If IU continues to play that hard and hits some 3s they will be a hard out...especially if they hold down their turnovers. Purdue was fortunate to have pulled out the game

I’m not saying I don’t want them to stay, logic tells me they likely won’t. Coach will be honest with them, he won’t run them off, however, in Berg’s case it might be for the best for him (he has talent) to move down a level where he gets a chance to play 20-25 minutes a night, I think he’ll put up good numbers.

Robbie is great. He's definitely trying to be unbiased though.

The "great block" Mbako had on Braden was no ball and all wrist. That no call was a five point swing right there.

TKRs moving screens were weak too. That happens all game, every game. To call those and just let bodies fly on rebounds in a physical game makes no sense....

Yea, Robbie made it seem like he got hammered, maybe during the game it’s called, at the end no way. Rice was out of control, he’s likely their 5th option in this situation.

The refs many times exhibited a slow whistle on some calls and I don't mean slow as in an athletic call where they let them play, but more so like a long connection from the eyes to the whistle that may have resulted in rebounding being too quick for them, but screens on the perimeter where there are less bodies much easier to see and compute.

We could argue all day about this one. There was contact, sure, but Harris went straight up. Arm hit elbow probably. No chest contact like Robbie was saying. Didn't understand that. What I think happened with Rice was one of 2 things: A) he felt contact and tried to make MORE contact by coming back down onto Harris, in order to better draw the foul, or B) changed his mind mid-air because the shot was too difficult, and tried to pass it to Ballo.

I'm with Painter though. How does Galloway not have the ball in his hands in that situation. I wonder if that's what Ballo was screaming at Rice for.

Also the officials I have to say were horrible all way around.. they clearly were not up to officiating a game like this.

I thought the first call on TRK was ok, but the second one was weak. As I explained to Mrs. Chi-Boiler last night, moving screens are like holding in football. They happen on just about every play and only the egregious ones get called. I believe they called 2 on each team last night. Both on Reneau? The one in the backcourt on Cox I thought was a bad call at first but then on replay you could see Reneau slide to the left when he didn't have to.
