Coach Brohm has to decide what were the reasons for the terrific defensive failures in the 4 games.
Eastern Michigan,Minnesota,Auburn, and the 4th qtr of Wisconsin.A thorough review of those films should give him an idea if it was poor performance or a bad game plan.

Anyone who has been following Boilers has seen the depth from which they are emerging and gotta understand this is a process. If you can’t recognize the tremendous progress in all phases of Boiler football, then I don’t think you’ve been paying attention. At same time, if you think this is or should be a finished product after 2 seasons and 1 fully Brohm recruiting class then I think you are being unrealistic. Hold on tight cause this is gonna be a wild and I think, a dramatically upward, ride. BOILER UP!

Fair to blame both? Look at how Landholm got roasted on these boards yet his units outperformed Holt’s...

Is Holt the best defensive coach in the nation? Probably not. He knows defense, has a lot of passion and appears he is willing to teach. I am going to side with Holt on this one. Good players make coaches look way better than they are in any sport.

I think yesterday demonstrates at least a partial failure on both counts (talent and coaching), but given our relative lack of talent (the larger issue, in my opinion), I have to credit the coaches with a pretty good job, overall, on the season. Yesterday was just a bit of a 'perfect storm' - a talented, but underachieving team was motivated to prove a point against an over-achieving but inconsistent team. I didn't expect to win, but I didn't expect it to be nearly that easy for Auburn (which would also reinforce that the scheme deserves at least some of the blame). Despite the beatdown, I remain somewhat optimistic (certainly, relative to typical Purdue football expectations) in the medium and long-term.

The one thing that seems to show up in most bowl games is there is one team ready to play, and the other team trying to feel out and survive the first half. Last year when we lost the majority of our defense due to graduation, most of us knew this year was going to be tough on the defensive side. We were short on depth last season, so how we thought that depth deficit was going to disappear this year has me scratching my head. What we have moving forward is a defense with a lot of expierance, a recruiting class which will most likely see 5 of them starting by the end of a season, creating the depth we have been lacking. I think we forget how bad we were....we were picking up recruits being passed up by MAC teams. Be patient, next year will be a lot better, we pretty much have the entire defense returning, and we may witness them carring the offense fir awhile until the O line is broke in.

Talent. Look at the starting linemen and you’ll see why we couldn’t stop anyone.
It's Talent, did anyone hear the announcers tonight talking about Clemson's depth? a 2nd string DL gonna be a Pro draft pick, a 3rd string DL being SC H.S. POY . Their 2nd and 3rd teamers looked very talented. As Al McGuire always said " Great players make great coaches".

For goodness sakes, the talent isn't good. How many players did the team from last year? Holt coached that defense and it was pretty darn good. So let's stop with the Holt talk.
also by criticizing Holt are some people going to absolve the position coaches of any blame?

When you have a glaring weakness like we have, small & slow DB's, and the opponent has a strength in the same area, fast & big receivers, you are going to get pounded. Furthermore, we also did not have the D-Line size and talent to match the Auburn O-Line. Holt could be the best coach ever and he couldn't fix the talent gap. We were going to get scored on repeatedly. This is on our poor recruiting for years previous.

After year one, everyone praised holt for how his defense carried the team. I don't think he forgot how to game plan and call defense.
Exactly. Holt took a terrible defense and turned it around in one year. This year was a blip. We have a lot of fresh talent coming in next year. Let’s wait 12 months and then decide.

I blame the coaches for somehow getting a not-very-talented roster into a bowl game against 25 future NFL players.

The bowl game defense was what? DE's were junior and sophmore LB. DT's were true freshman and redshirt freshman. LB'ers were junior, sophmore, true freshman. And DB's were senior corner, walkon Saftey and corner, and sophmore safety? That is a super young defense.

Holt seemed to have a pretty salty defense most games last year. I’ll give him a couple more years before blaming him for not competing with SEC talent.

Sometimes the results come down to the Jimmys and the Joes and not the Xs and the Os.

Holt is awful.

Talent is awful.
Purdue gave up on average 19 ppg last season. That's not awful - that's in the Top 30 for scoring defense.

This season our defense suffered because of the lack of quality DLs outside of Neal and maybe Watts. We suffered because our LBs were young outside of Bailey. We suffered at CB and S. All of this can be explained by the lack of quality and depth in recruiting in the Hazell years. Brohm has been trying to overcome this since he came to Purdue. If you give Holt good players, you will see good results, such as we saw last season.

Good grief.

I assume you're a fan of Purdue football. If so, you were surely paying attention earlier in the season when Brohm took 100% of the blame after the first 3 losses.

No?

Not to mention, the entire defense was replaced and much younger. I'll tell you the issue though. Zero pass rush. Why? Because Hazell failed to recruit anyone worth a nickle.

Look, I get it.

But, I posted a few days ago, about my dislike for these threads/posts.

Many of these guys we have on our roster were recruited by DH. They're Boilermakers, and they deserve our respect.

We have a talent gap. Brohm is addressing it. But these guys . . . "warriors," if you will . . . the many who were recruited by DH, they are building the foundation for the future of Purdue football. They need help, and help is on the way.

I never bashed the players. They have worked very hard to improve their game and set the culture. Doesn't mean they are high D1 players.

Same thought different day. The offense improved the defense did not. Brohn can't afford another season like this. Holt should go.

So one year his defense gives up 19 ppg and is in the Top 30 scoring defenses. The next year numerous experienced players graduated and his defense gives up 25-26 ppg in the regular season. And that's cause for Holt to be canned?

Where were you when Hazell had guys like Hudson and the reject from Nebraska giving up 38 ppg?

There is no rationale for these clowns.

One game and these ass clowns come out of the wood work. Considering where Purdue was just recently, its a miracle to be playing in a bowl game. Give it a rest.
I would not say it is one game, and they came out of the wood work. They have been around from time to time all year this year.

I attended the bowl game. It was talent, pure and simple. The difference in size and talent was men vs. boys.
