Harris and Cox did not help Smith handle the defensive pressure vs PSU, Marquette, and Texas AM.
Wonder if we could have the stones not just to get a complementary guy, but a big time starter??
Thinking bigger than just a ball handler, if we follow the mold of some of these teams and bring more scoring that covers alot of problems. A physical guy that is so good they can surplant one of our starters at the 3-5 would cover alot of problems. I know top guys are costly, and keeping our roster will be expensive, but if you want another FF....worth it.
How about going after one of iu's 6-9 guys like Mackenzie Mgbako when their ship sinks this off season & things go to pot? Maybe he wants to play for a winner for once and have a shot at a championship? Just an example, & a fun one that would drive iu crazy. There will be several highly talented guys like that in the portal, but whomever, that would require an aggressive staff.

Highly doubtful unless there is a surprise transfer. But even if there is, you have to hope for a Lance Jones type situation. It won't be a highly rated guy cuz we don't pay for transfers.
We have multiple areas of improvement. Yes we need another ball handler but we need another 4 who can post up and take all the pressure off TKR. Granted things will get better when we get Jacobsen back but I'd still like a third option. I'm sorry but Berg ain't it, Waddell isn't turning into an option after this much time, and Heide will get better but there are some teams where you need three big guys to rotate against.

Who knows if either happens. What I do know is Colvin and Heide have to start being more consistent. Lot of flashes but also a lot of bad stretches too. It's time for them to take the next steps. They can, but they need to start now.

I love how some people think the portal is like Amazon. Read the reviews. Pick the one you want, and a few days later they're on the team.
Matt's style of play is not as conducive to getting a portal player as some other teams. Doesn't mean you can't just a bit different...and what you can see as far as skill...you may not know the mental part. Purdue hasn't even got into the Big hardly and people are already thinking the year is over and ready for next year
Lol jk at a fun example. But truth is, Braden Smith could even make lowly iu players winners. In any case, hope we find a great 4 or 5 somewhere.

I don't recall reading that here. But I have confidence in our staff to land a guy that helps us.
I think with this year's experience, Cox can be that 2nd ball handler. Thought Harris would, but his shot confidence seems broken.
Agree on the need for front line help. Staff could make either a great 4 or 5 work with the current team. I have confidence in them finding one if they make it a priority.
Rather unbelievable that we really only have 1 guy that create his own shot off the dribble.
braden can, fletch can, CJ can and even Trey starts out facing up and creating a shot off his dribble. Problem is he always does a jump hook or an up and under it seems. Myles and Cam need to add that
Braden scores almost exclusively getting his own. Fletch maybe 50% or less. CJ probably more than 50%.
I think most expect an ankle breaking jam as evidence of getting their own, but that isn't necessary.

Yes, Purdue is not in a dribble drive offense and so you won't see the same type of play IMO. You just need players that when defended tight can put it on the floor, but not to catch it and start dribbling without a read. Those teams that are dribble drive have to have all five players able to put the ball on the court since each facilitates the offense. Hour wise Purdue had a lot of time to be sharp, but they were not. Purdue has weaknesses, but so do most teams. It is a long season and hopefully we will see more growth out of the freshmen and sophomores...and Berg/Furst...
There's practically zero chance that Painter gets 2 guys out of the portal, especially a backcourt guy.
He *may* go and get another big. Whether that's an experienced 5 to put next to TKR at the 4 or another 4 to help back him up next to Jacobsen
If confined to IU I’d rather have Renea’s or Rice or the five from AZ. Mgbako is too hard to spell and seems to need the ball in his hands before he is an offensive player the few times I’ve seen them
My guess is for sure one, more than likely that’s it, one never knows about players leaving though, that would be the only case where two are added.
Just using his name for fun. While we will get a player(s), It would surprise me like a sudden deer in the headlights if it is an iu guy.

Benter the guard you are referring to, is possibly the best shooter on the team except for Loyer. And give him time he might equal that?? Apparently, behind others in other areas though.....thus the RS.
Harris and Cox are going to improve as ball handlers and Purdue is adding another guard in Antione West.
Well Ballo is gone after this year (5th year Covid senior). Rice would be an excellent backup to Smith, but almost 99.9% sure rice doesn’t want to be a backup anywhere and same with Reneau. Reneau can score but plays minimal defense and doesn’t rebound particularly well. Mgbako would be good on offense and painter and staff would get him to be better than he is and maybe even get him to understand defense!
Jones was great for us last season obviously, but coming in he wasn't some star who would demand anything.
There's going to be a few 4/5 guys who fit that bill. Solid, maybe even surprising but not demanding a big role that could help us.
I agree we are going to be pretty deep at the guard/wing positions so tough to add another one in the portal unless there's an unexpected transfer.
Yeah it boggles my mind that people put such gigantic expectations on freshmen playing against really good teams at around 10 games (now) in to their initial college career.
They are in no doubt still learning and most certainly have talent, but they'll need some time to learn/adjust to be able to contribute. Which still could happen this season, but I would imagine not until later on.
Not an equal comparison.. Smith also had a two time NPOY to toss the ball too.. he also made a LOT of mistakes.
My viewing of IU is very limited, but in those minutes Mgbako who is capable of shooting did not move without the ball. Was that what the coach wanted or is that team of mercenaries still learning to play together ...I don't know.

With the portal now available as it is, you have 2 choices. You can either recruit and count on Freshmen to perform. Or you go into the portal for your immediate needs. CMP made the decision not to go into the portal and to count on freshmen (for the record, I back whatever decision he makes on recruits/portal). But when you make that decision, fans expect those freshmen to perform. It isn't like it used to be. You now have a resource (legally) to get more experienced players immediately. If you choose not to use that resource, that is fine, but you can't then say "well they're just freshmen you can't put high expectations on them". I hope that makes sense.
