ND preview

Any discussion of ND starts with sensational sophomore point guard Hannah Hildago. A McD's AA coming out of HS and had a monster freshman year, contending with Juju Watkins for FOY nationally. Next to her is Olivia Miles, a potential WNBA lottery pick and multi year starter for ND at pg, now playing 2 guard but still has the handles and passing to play point. She missed all of last year injured, but seems to be playing at 100% now. Playing 2 potentially AAs pgs together will make ND VERY hard to press, especially if Amiyah and Poole are not available for this game. Good news is ND is dealing with a lot of injuries at the moment, but unlike ours most of theirs are to key pieces in their rotation. 3 forwards missed their first game, including AA Citron who likely won't play against us. Don't shed any tears for the Irish though. Along with their outstanding starting pgs, they have King, a first team all ACC player from Pitt that transferred to ND for her Covid year, and Prosper, who also missed last season injured and put up 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds their first game. Anchoring the Irish in the middle is 6'5" Ukranian freshman Kate Koval, the #5 recruit in this years class. While not as broad of shoulder as McCarthy, she is not a skinny girl either. She got 18 points on 11 shots with 7 rebounds in her first game and she will be a good gauge for how good our frosh centers are at this point in their careers. ND only played 7 girls first game out and the two guard bench players combined for 7 points, so any foul problems for ND could be significant. I would guessND by 30, but their lack of depth could make this a much closer game if they have to sit a starter for a long period for any reason.

Observations from IU's success

As I observed IU's defeat of Michigan I noted that the coaching on both sides of the ball were excellent. In particular, both the offensive and defensive lines were terrific in their alignment and scheming. Their secondary was disciplined and covered. Their receivers found ways to get open. All signs of excellent coaching. I believe coach Walters is a talented coach but he just does not have the staff competent enough to support him. He literally is trying to call both sides of the ball as well as scheming both the offense and the defense. One man cannot cover all the bases. I all not sure who is most responsible for an incompetent and ineffective coaching staff. But, coach Walters cannot do it alone. No offensive coordinator. No defensive coordinator. I wanted coach Walters to be success, but his staff has let him down. Norm

State of the Union

1) Brohm's timing, leaving and taking coaches and players with him, did not help the situation.
2) The Harrell/Card experiment turned out to be a mistake.
3) Don't know what was behind Walters hire but he was in a no win situation in both his first and second season especially since key players left after the 1st season killed this year.
4) Tough to recruit when the sword of Damocles is hanging over one's head.
5) IF they do not have a deal with a name Coach and arm him with NIL money this is not going to be Walters last year.
6) It sucks that IU is having a banner turn around but their Coach brought many players with him that knew his system.
7) The Northwestern game is a MUST win or it will get uglier.
8) Been though the highs, with Jack, Young and Brohm and been through the lows
9) NIL's will replace NLI's.
10) The ball is in the AD's hands and Purdue has to decide if they are going to pay the money necessary for a Coach and PLAYERS or it will be a death sentence to the bottom tier of the B1G for awhile.

Bronco Mendenhall

if we go for a new coach, I think this guy would be a viable candidate. Successful coach at BYU and Virginia w/ a 135 - 81 record at those 2 schools. He currently coaches at New Mexico and is 3- 6 in his 1st season there. He's 59 yrs old and signed a 6 million $ contract for 5 yr. So he's an experienced coach w/ a good record and one that would see Purdue as an upgrade from their current position . Is he my favorite? maybe not but I think he's a coach that we probably could get at this point and would be a very good upgrade.

Triple double

…for Braden tonight.

I can see Braden going off tonight against the drop coverage he will probably see. Much like Creighton, he will be looking to score. I can see him getting a lot of assists as well as the team continues to gel.

I’m looking to see focus on turnovers and defensive communication tonight.

The freshmen are all smart so I look forward to seeing how much they improve from game to game. Harris and Cox both have big-ten ready bodies so they should improve quickly with experience.
