'Selective' does not apply to football players and legacies.

Further, selectiveness is not a measure of quality. Look at the NU website to see all the worthless or even frivolous majors that are offered.
Selective applies to all Northwestern students. Your personal opinion of the worth or lack thereof of majors at Northwestern has no influence on the academic status of Northwestern University. It does however speak volumes as to your lack of intelligence. Northwestern is considered a top ten university (because of their selectivity and rigor) while Purdue is considered a top 50 institution.

Colvin and Heide yikes

When sets breakdown. You need a PG that can dribble drive or create his own shot against tough teams.....ours does not have that ability. He's good when sets can be executed.
I suspect that Braden is about to go on a run where he looks all world again. Hopefully some other guys step up and this team gets well over the next six games.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

As someone else mentioned this is looking like a .500 or slightly better in the big ten team. Big ten is good this year. Wont be many freebies on the road if any.

Ill give Painter the benefit of the doubt that we go 12-8 in big play. That puts us at 20-11 and likely right in the 7 to 10 seed range, with our SOS helping us stay there despite multiple blow outs.

I was totally wrong earlier in the year about us being much better with TKR at the 5, teams have countered it extremely well and we have no answer. None.

Edey was better than even imagined that he was able to mask all this.

The number 1 issue has been the number 1 issue since painter took over. We so not ever have more than 1 guy at a time that can create off the dribble. I mean truly create and be successful at it. We had it in Edwards and had an amazing run. We had it in Ivey, to a lesser degree, and had great season success, less so in the tourney. Outside those 2 we havent come close. Smith can do it, but vs good long defenders he isnt successful with it.

We continue recruiting role players. Zach was so good we were dominant anyway, but without finding another Zach, we have GOT to start getting multiple Edwards and Iveys.

@#22 Iowa, @#15 MSU, #1 UCLA, #20 Michigan, @Oregon (who beat then #12 Baylor and only has one bad loss to SDkSU)(marginally winnable), @Washington (on Kelsey Plum jersey retirement night)(marginally winnable), #7 USCal, @UILL(marginally winnable), Nebraska (marginally winnable), then 3 games we have a good chance in : 2/2 hosting UWisc, 2/9 at Rutgers, and 2/12 hosting Northwestern. I'd bet heavily against Purdue the next 7 games, and would be shocked if we won either the Illinois or Nebraska games. After Nortwestern we have some winnable games hosting UMinn and at PSU scattered between two games against IU and one against OSU. Absolute best case scenario I see is 5-13 BT record and at least a 7 game losing streak starting after tonight's game. Tell me why you might believe otherwise please?
Any other time I’d wish you good luck on your betting, but not this time. Boiler up! Go upset some of all those giants (Is dreaming still free?)

I’ll double down on my statement. You mentioned position players. Did any of them develop physically by redshirting? Were any of them better for redshirting? I can name just as many who didn’t redshirt who were just as good and didn’t redshirt. The entire point of redshirting linemen was to recruit smaller linemen and then use a year to beef them up. And my entire point was that any lineman that is worth anything was already on a weight and conditioning program in high school and one more year of drinking protein shakes is not going to add another 40 pounds to a 260 pound lineman or develop stronger muscles! You failed to grasp the main point of my argument and decided to go on your own tangent! The only reason the above players redshirted was because they were at a position where they didn’t start. Did they actually develop? Or were they actually just as good as freshmen but just didn’t have an opportunity to play?
If you don’t think those guys developed, I give up.

And once again you know everything and I know nothing. You say 5 players entered the portal and then returned. Go ahead and name them! And who of those 5 players is an actual difference maker? Or will be a starter? And who of those 5 players actually got a better offer? And do you have any proof they actually entered the portal?

That’s like saying a player entering the nba combine is going to enter the nba draft!

So who entered the portal that decided to come back? And were they even serious about leaving in the first place?
I don’t know everything.

Tra’mar Harris
Jamari Payne
Ahrmad Branch
Nick Levy
Sterling Smith

I don’t know if all those guys will start. Branch is expected to complete and was the second fastest WR we had last year. Nick levy is our staring king snapper and when he saw we were hiring an elite ST coach he decided to stay. Harris and Payne were true freshmen and great recoveries. I don’t know anything about smith. Also Mockobee was expected to move on if Purdue didn’t keep Conard, so chalk that up to wait and see who the coach was but I didn’t count him since he didn’t officially enter the transfer portal. The other 5 did.

Again don’t let facts get in the way.

Best Keady/Painter PG after Braden

Tony Jones or Ricky Hall probably 2-3 for me. One or both may have been 2 time DPOY in the league. Both grew tremendously during their run at Purdue. Though neither was a pure pg.
Lewis Jackson was the best pure pg but was always injured and played most of his career in pain. Matt called him the toughest Boiler ever. Porter was solid all over the court.
Everette was very good, but also not a true pg and was the 4th scoring option on that very good team.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

They are not doing those things. They should…can they? Do they not have confidence in their dribbling? If so, that is lack of skill because they are explosive enough and should be playing around the rim. If you are playing small, you better be skilled AND quick . Zach, Braden and Fletcher had similar roles as last year with Trey playing as he did when Zach was not on the court. This year Cam and Myles cannot just stand behind the arc because Trey is not as dominant as Zach and so it is new experiences for Cam and Myles. Now throw in the freshmen and lose the one to defend the rim and Purdue is vulnerable to a certain type of team play.

I’ve not given up on the team, but they have to counter pressure better and have to get more out Myles and Cam. CJ will continue to get minutes IMO and have a good year
Have you seen it much the last two seasons? I haven't. At best there's an explosive drive off the fast break or to snag a rebound. What I haven't seen is breaking someone down off the dribble. Heck, I've seen Loyer do it much more often than those two and he's about five percent more athletic than I am.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Different kinds of athleticism. They are both leapers for sure and both can be good on defense.

Neither seem very creative on the drive or getting their own shot off the dribble. For Heide it's either thunder slam attempt or three. Colvin is similar although he does get the occasional hustle putback.

I'm not seeing them take their guy and break them down off the dribble.

Good point. Penn State, I don't know, awful game for Purdue. A&M has many of the same attributes as Auburn, but a notch below. I feel Purdue playing their best could beat Penn State and give A&M a game. Against Auburn the talent gap is way to big. Last year's Pudue team would fare about the same as they did vs UCONN against Auburn. ( A real 15 point loss not the 30 pont beat down before garbage time made it closer.)
Purdue playing their best beats TAMU by double digits.

Last year’s team would have beat that Auburn team, could have lost too but I’d bet they would win more than lose. Edey takes out Broome and any front court they had. It would have been similar to the bama game last year.

Best Keady/Painter PG after Braden

Clearly he's the best PG since 1980 if not ever at Purdue, but who is 2-5? I don't remember anyone before Stephens since I was a baby. I'd go Stephens 2, and everyone else blah.

Who was your 2-5? You got LewJack, Cunningham, Porter Roberts, the blend of McKnight/Parkinson, Eric Hunter the non QB, who else?
I think he's very good. But Painter hasn't had many very good PGs if any. Same with Keady. I'm not sure he's any better than Stephens for example. But otherwise, point guard has rarely been a top spot for us. We've had what one guy you could call a pure PG who made the NBA in the Keady-Painter Era? I am skeptical Braden makes it primarily because he gives up too much in both size and quickness. If he were 6-3, he'd be a first rounder.
