Marshall at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Small ball to start. Myles and Cam starting

Interesting adjustment for Painter, TJ....he's hinted at that lineup (but not necessarily starting it), especially if he wasn't getting more from the other 5's.

Plus, maybe this gives a further spark to rev up Colvin and Heide. May help Harris to come off the bench too. We shall see....

Marshall at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, the Marshall Thundering Herd (3-1) visit Mackey Arena to take on the #6-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (4-1). Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 noon (Eastern time) with television coverage on BTN Plus. This is the second meeting all-time between the schools, as Purdue defeated Marshall 79-74 going back several decades to the '70/'71 season.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Marshall - Nate Martin, Obinna Anochili-Killen, Dezayne Mingo, Ryan Nutter, and Mikal Dawson

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Will Berg, Gicarri Harris, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Purdue is coming off a disappointing and decisive loss at Marquette on Tuesday, 76-58. The loss also ended Purdue's 39-game non-conference win streak. In that game, Purdue struggled handling Marquette's defensive pressure and made several mistakes, leading to 15 turnovers and numerous transition opportunities for the Golden Eagles. The Boilers also could not convert enough on the good opportunities they did have.

The Marshall Thundering Herd are seeking a third straight win. Marshall has just one defeat occurring in the second game of the season in a 90-80 blemish against a good Toledo squad. They have replied by defeating Southern Indiana along with a 83-62 home win against Bellarmine. Nate Martin is having a great start to the season. The senior guard has scored at least 15 points in all four games, including 23 points in the recent win. Martin has delivered an average of 18.3 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Dezayne Mingo scored 19 points in the win against Southern Indiana. The junior guard has provided an average of 12 PPG on 50% shooting. Jalen Speer netted 20 points in the win earlier this week. The senior guard is posting an average of 10 PPG. Makal Dawson has shot 40% or below in three of four clashes. The senior guard has registered 6 PPG.

Marshall is ranked 165th in DI in the KenPom ratings, 193rd offensively and 150th defensively. They play at a much faster tempo than Purdue, rated 91st to Purdue's 309, well down the list and with the last sixth of teams with the slower paces in all of D1 basketball.

Look for Purdue to continue to heavily rely upon Trey Kaufman-Renn, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith for scoring. TKR leads the Boilers in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.6 and 6.6, respectively. Fletcher Loyer is averaging a second-best 16.2 points per game, and Braden Smith is next at 14.6. Braden Smith needs to be more efficient with his shooting, and last game had some costly turnovers. He is the floor general for the team without question and is tied for 2nd in the nation with 9.4 assists per game. Purdue still needs consistent production from a group of other players and has to push the defensive learning curve. Purdue has slipped to 20th in the KenPom ratings, and it's primarily through the defense, now at 61st. They are still a top-10 rated offense at 8th.....and for now, that's where they'll have the edge on most teams.

This game could be very competitive, although a return to the home environment should help the Purdue newcomers.

Some thoughts from Matt Painter are fairly telling:

"Our first three games, we weren't lights out. (Then) we played really well against Alabama. We weren't great before that. So we're trying to find ourselves, trying to find some consistency. But this is what you want. Because we get thrown into (Big Ten play) at Penn State and Maryland in December. You want to be able to get off to a good start in the league; that's a little easier said than done. I just believe if you've got a good enough team, you need to go out and get challenged, even if you've got to take a couple on the chin."

"That way, when you get into the NCAA Tournament, you've done everything in your power as a coach to help."

"We need to start by taking care of the basketball. One of the things that probably jumps out for us is I don't think we're as good as Marquette defensively. So, in practice, we don't see that. Doesn't mean we don't have athletic players, doesn't mean we don't have good players. But they have a more experienced defensive group. So we've got to grow at taking care of the basketball."

How do the Boilers respond this afternoon? We shall see, starting in a little over an hour or so.

Boiler up, my friends.

Schedule

I understand that we are terrible, but how can the Big Ten create schedules that are that unbalanced. They have pretty good idea what every team is going to be like, so how do you miss it that bad. Maybe on the bright side since we are this bad it was the perfect year to get this gauntlet. Hate to waste a good team because of brutal schedule.
I really don't think with 18 teams, and certain teams' fixed opponents, that there's a great way to make schedules balanced.

I can't explain it to you. But I'll try I guess. You say Purdue's SoS is 7th ?? Well one, you are losing, which has no factor in the SoS, I know that. But every team you are playing is winning. Just like before this year when IU played in the B1G East they had a great SoS because they played OSU, PSU, MSU and UM every year .... I just went to Sagarin and he has IU 77 and you at 7 ... because you have played 4 teams in HIS top 30 ... IU has played 0 top 30 teams.
Normal calculations of SOS do not include what you're talking about.

Worst Purdue Football Coach in your lifetime

Chi-Boiler, since I had to write the police report, I will let you explain the Jesus incident that took place.....
The short version, which is probably all that is necessary, former Purdue QB Eric Hunter broke into a dorm room in Owen Hall brandishing a knife. Claimed he was Jesus.

Now that I recollect, I wasn't actually in Owen at the time, but still knew the 2 guys. Still friends with one of them on FB. Went with them to the 1994 regional in Knoxville. The following school year was when this happened, maybe in the fall. I had moved to an apartment for the 94-95 year.

Speculation from Spartanwire.

Michigan State should be concerned about Michigan getting the number one quarterback in the country. $8 Million I think I heard. Big alumni with big checks. What is the best theory, we hired Walters but gave him no NIL to speak of?, or we did and he can't coach?, He picked the wrong assistants due to no money to hire good ones? he was not prepared for a HC job in the big ten or anywhere? He got arrogant and thought he had made it to the top and could just coast? You know leadership comes in many flavors, did he not see that no one was buying in to his blueprint?

Linda McMahon: So being co-CEO of a wrastling federation qualifies you for Secretary of Education

The main gist of the post was to point the ridiculousness of the selection pick.

You tell me, is Linda McMahon qualified to be Secretary of Education?

You tell me, was the Mayor of South Bend qualified to be Secretary of Transportation? Dems respond: "Of course he's qualified. He's gay."

Great loss

Not sure why you are choosing to be an A$$ this AM? No need for that.

Perhaps you like Furst play. That's great.

Certainly CMP agrees with you that he is capable in the situation he now has. I just think a 6-10" Mr. Basketball should get up and dunk it....where his shot doesn't get blocked as it has.
LOL, you take it personally eh? I said it because he did a number of things well against Marquette. You must have been pee'ing or something. Or playign with your ass.
If I were a basketball season ticket holder I would be pissed to have so many games against sisters of the poor type scrubs. I could never imagine Paint trying to push that down the throats of the fans.

I also noticed they shot about 29% from 3. Woof
You don't grasp iu fans mentality. WIN baby, doesn't matter who against. If you can't beat the big boys, win against the sisters of the poor ALL THE TIME.

Purdue at Michigan State: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

this is what happens when you recruit players based on speed rather than the ability to catch a ball. they say you can't teach speed. But we have seen over 1,000 times you also can't teach the ability to actually catch a ball. Great receivers don't need speed to be great - just ask jerry Rice or Don Driver. Neither was known for having tremendous speed.
don't know if he's speedy or not but it seems like this staff likes the taller type receivers, to Edrine's credit he makes some nice catches but he drops one every game. I would like to see more of a mix in regards to the receiving corps. I like some tall receivers but have some 5'10 ish burners mixed in. Edrine was a portal guy. Thought we'd get more out of Kam Brown this yr , saw him do well at UCLA

Not anything left to say about this SHIT…

We most certainly can.
Agree. It’s crazy talk that we won’t or wouldn’t. I’ve heard that gamedays are a $15mil per home game winfall for the AD when you factor in tickets, parking, concessions, etc.

Multiply that by 7 and that’s over $100mil before you get the first cent of a TV payout. That’s over $170mil you stand to make a year with a full RA. How much of that $100mil do we miss out on if we keep Walters? I’d imagine it’s far more than the cost of his buyout.

Agree 100%! It's all about the money, and money isn't a problem for Purdue. That's a weak excuse the apologist like to us.

If iu is willing to commit $9M a year to a HC, then Purdue should easily be north of that.
I am wondering if Purdue has gotten any pressure from the B1G to replace this mess. The networks can’t be happy with this “entertainment “.
