There is a lot of truth to your comment. What I think happened is that Walters was whip-sawed, snookered and out-flanked by the portal. He was totally unprepared and unaware that so many of his best players were leaving for top dollar.
I agree. Who would say "no I'm not ready" and turn down an opportunity to be a head coach. Walters has had success at DC, can recruit, and from outside observations is passionate and worked hard. He would have benefited from a veteran, former head coach on his Purdue staff, but that's in the rear view mirror.
