This offense is not working for Purdue, it was ok when we had Eddy in the middle and TKR is no Eddy.
If it's not working change somethings around, we have to get everyone involved in the offence.
Our 2 most athletic players stand on the side waiting to get the ball and they took 5 shots between them.
We have a few games coming up we should win and are at home so at least we can look forward to that.
Our offense is very dependent on hitting outside open shots which we have not been hitting as of late.

Selective applies to all Northwestern students. Your personal opinion of the worth or lack thereof of majors at Northwestern has no influence on the academic status of Northwestern University. It does however speak volumes as to your lack of intelligence. Northwestern is considered a top ten university (because of their selectivity and rigor) while Purdue is considered a top 50 institution.
No need to be insulting. I think an important element of intelligence is being skeptical in general - such as, for example, in not accepting without question the PR flacking that 'elite' universities continually spew out to justify their astronomical tuition costs.

Selectivity is a clearly a farce in many respects at schools like NW given legacies, athletes and other special considerations, but how can you speak with any knowledge about the 'rigor' of such schools? How is rigor measured and compared? Have you not heard of grade inflation?

WL/Campus Recommendations?

Longtime Purdue fan but I’ve never been to Mackey or to West Lafayette even. I’m considering grabbing some tickets off SeatGeek and taking my nephews (13/16) to the game against Toledo. Anything I should know before coming to town? Any parking or food recommendations? Thanks in advance and BTFU.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I think Loyer and Smith had the perfect situation the last two years with Edey. Not that teams don't have to worry about stopping a dominant post player, they can focus on making guys like Loyer, Smith and others try to create and get their own shots, which they all struggle with.
Our lack of basketball athleticism is being exposed.
Smith's efficiency numbers as a junior are worse than his frosh/soph seasons. I think he benefited more than anyone else on the team from having Edey, and now the concerns we had from the time he was recruited (small, not uber-athletic) are starting to pop up. I hope I'm wrong but don't think I am.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Could care less about the 'student athlete' thing. As long as guys win, I don't care about their major, their grades, or whether they graduate.
With all the resources thrown at athletes to help them academically, if they don't care about school, big deal. Just go win games so I can take exciting trips to fun places to watch you play.. They're paid (literally now) to play basketball and there's no loyalty to a program. So let's call it what is is

Need 2 guys ideally.

Must get a 4/5.

The 2 or 3 - need a guy that can get his own shot with more length. Someone in the mold of 6-4" Xiavian Lee kid from Princeton. That's why Lance Jones was such a blessing. I thought Harris would be that guy. Right size and handle but so far can't shoot. Cox perhaps not long enough, but has the handle.
In any case.....Need a difference maker here too.
Need at least a decent 5 next year backing up DJ, TKR at 4 with RB behind, those 4 would do it; Berg banging in min minutes

CJ and/or Harris tuneup for breakdown guard, West maybe?

Colvin and Heide dribble and practice move to rim all summer

This year, keep TKR(Cam some min.) at 4, Burgess/Furst at 5, 2/3 Loyer/Miles/Cox(more)

Nah IU didn’t belong. They showed the frauds that they were vs the two good teams they played. They could have at least played Louisville but they paid 1M to cancel that series.

IU was supposed to be the top scoring team in the country. What happened? They were supposed to be the top rush defense in the country. What happened?

Ah yes, that’s right, they ran up scores and didn’t play anyone.
Is this this because of some lingering Brohm love? As in “Brohm was so dreamy good and is the gold standard for football opponents.”
The Brohm test is not how the playoffs were determined; if they were Stanford would be in.

But 11-1 with the only loss to a top five team in the road will get you in.

Playoffs....

Hopefully the next round is better but I agree, the first round games we're all that great to watch. SMU/IU never should have been part of it in the first place, which didn't help.
Apparently, neither should have Tennessee and that should stop the SEC teams whining they didn't get in, but it won't.

The real truth is 12 teams is to many if your goal is to have all the games competitive. But that was never the goal, the goal is money and to stop some of the whining. So, I am fine with the current format and next round will have more blowouts because 8 is still too many. But the blow out all top teams that get stuck playing early games to try rest players and pull them to try and prevent injury.

since my thoughts have been expressed in the original game thread to @qazplm , I'll just copy and paste to add my $.01. ;)

No, I haven't either. What I can't do is state for certainty that they can't (physically incapable )versus won't (mentally lacking confidence) versus shouldn't (inside a set that generally places them farther down the options in what they should do). This is where a conversation could quickly point to a short shot clock and how it affects motion (better with longer clock) versus a set (a counter to a short clock) under the "team" type offense where motion is only mostly player scouted and sets being more scripted than motion has the set and player within the script scouted. What the shorter clock has done is force teams to attempt a shot relatively quick since the clock is playing D as well as the other team. This naturally leans to the quicker more athletic defender and offensive player which leans to more to offensive players "needing" to be able to score more as an individual. Consequently, the individual player's value is enhanced. The sport for "most" is entertainment value and most people like the track star qualities over the basketball "team" skills many times not noticed and so the rules have followed that line of thought I believe.

Now, I do expect Myles and Cam to grow as players and get "more" capable to "breaking down" the D sometime at Purdue, but that has NOT been their experience at Purdue. Myles is in his first year of playing much and Cam is getting many more minutes as well. Neither last year needed to break down the D since Zach was the "closer" if the clock was winding down and so BOTH have no experience to draw upon in the roles they now have and when you throw in the freshmen...there is a lot of inexperience Purdue relies upon. A couple of years ago it was Jaden that was the closer as the clock was winding down, but soon became the closer when the clock was NOT winding down. ;)

What about this year? Obviously, Purdue needs more out of Myles and Cam offensively. I suspect neither worked on their dribbling near as much as shooting (over the summer) and that was probably almost all catch and shoot and as we have seen teams load up on defending Braden and trying to keep Trey from getting the ball on short drives...and then trying to run Fletch, Myles and Cam off the 3 pt line where only Fletcher has put the ball on the deck...as you and others know.

This is where maybe not depending on them to attack pressure individually should take a backset and just incorporate them into a set as an earlier option where they may get an open look or at least need fewer dribbling to get in scoring range? Or could add motion to more screens (of similar player size that allows more dives, slips and generally more action even if maybe not getting the physical size difference in the screening of a 5 for a 1. Purdue needs to get more offense out of them.

Perhaps this is a time where Matt takes one or both out of the starting lineup and perhaps goes smaller with CJ on the court more and/or Burgess or Berg getting more minutes which if were to happen would most likely see Burgess I'm guessing. Both offer growing pains, but could the pains be short in duration? I have to believe that we see some things different in the next game, but what they will be...who knows? Hopefully, some of that is getting Myles and Cam involved in the offense in ways that their usage is not just a late option behind the arc or an early if open in transition behind the arc.

Completely agree, especially the part of getting CJ on the court more. He reminds me a lot of Carson where the guy can breakdown his defender and get a decent shot off that is more than a wing and a prayer (something, unfortunately, that Cam and Myles can't do.. nor Fletch for that matter).

So who was going to take IUs place? Indiana lost to two ranked teams.

SEC never embraced the whole "student athlete" thing and in today's world they will thrive. Amazing Pearl is now a saint after his shenanigans at UT. It's a new world with pay to play and unlimited free agency.

Loyer is who he is against quick, athletic guards…not very good. Cox is a better option at shooting guard. 30 minutes of ZERO in the National Championship game last season…enuf said.

Too young?

Bringing this thread up again, because I think it’s a massive deal. Auburn had almost all seniors and Covid seniors playing today. That can’t be ignored, and should be considered as we panic.

2024-25 Purdue Transfer THREAD

Didn’t mean the “coach talk” as a bad thing but yes it sounds like Odom wants to keep as many current players as possible when you hear him talk…do you blame him!? He has a lot of roster filling ahead of him!
The problem with the transfer portal is that everyone is so over recruited and the majority of the kids that enter think the pasture is always greener on the other side so no mater what coaches do or say they have to fight a double sided sword.
Exactly. The coach talk may be, we see you as a valuable member of our roster but we will be bringing in a third starting caliber QB to be as competitive as possible. Some of these kids either shy away from competition or equate $ to their perceived value to the program and will sell themselves to the highest bidder.

Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Have you seen it much the last two seasons? I haven't. At best there's an explosive drive off the fast break or to snag a rebound. What I haven't seen is breaking someone down off the dribble. Heck, I've seen Loyer do it much more often than those two and he's about five percent more athletic than I am.

Heide is NOT a 4. he never was, and never will be. Small ball isn't working. We badly needed TKR to remain at the 4 and for one of Berg, Furst or Burgess to step up and start at center. It's not happening.
We're running a "small ball" line-up, but are we running a "small ball" offense? I think of small ball as constantly running from one end to the other trying to beat the opponent with speed, quickness and constant passing. To me, we're still running an offense for a 7'4" center with a guard who dribbles away half the shot clock and then hopes that something special will happen with the defense already set. That may have worked last year, but not so much this year...
