Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

They are not doing those things. They should…can they? Do they not have confidence in their dribbling? If so, that is lack of skill because they are explosive enough and should be playing around the rim. If you are playing small, you better be skilled AND quick . Zach, Braden and Fletcher had similar roles as last year with Trey playing as he did when Zach was not on the court. This year Cam and Myles cannot just stand behind the arc because Trey is not as dominant as Zach and so it is new experiences for Cam and Myles. Now throw in the freshmen and lose the one to defend the rim and Purdue is vulnerable to a certain type of team play.

I’ve not given up on the team, but they have to counter pressure better and have to get more out Myles and Cam. CJ will continue to get minutes IMO and have a good year
Have you seen it much the last two seasons? I haven't. At best there's an explosive drive off the fast break or to snag a rebound. What I haven't seen is breaking someone down off the dribble. Heck, I've seen Loyer do it much more often than those two and he's about five percent more athletic than I am.

As someone else mentioned this is looking like a .500 or slightly better in the big ten team. Big ten is good this year. Wont be many freebies on the road if any.

Ill give Painter the benefit of the doubt that we go 12-8 in big play. That puts us at 20-11 and likely right in the 7 to 10 seed range, with our SOS helping us stay there despite multiple blow outs.

I was totally wrong earlier in the year about us being much better with TKR at the 5, teams have countered it extremely well and we have no answer. None.

Edey was better than even imagined that he was able to mask all this.

The number 1 issue has been the number 1 issue since painter took over. We so not ever have more than 1 guy at a time that can create off the dribble. I mean truly create and be successful at it. We had it in Edwards and had an amazing run. We had it in Ivey, to a lesser degree, and had great season success, less so in the tourney. Outside those 2 we havent come close. Smith can do it, but vs good long defenders he isnt successful with it.

We continue recruiting role players. Zach was so good we were dominant anyway, but without finding another Zach, we have GOT to start getting multiple Edwards and Iveys.

No I haven’t and we don’t know if they can. I have a suspicion that they aren’t given the green light to do that since they aren’t the main focus of the offense. If we are going to be successful, (and they actually are able to) they need to add it and quick.

No, I haven't either. What I can't do is state for certainty that they can't (physically incapable )versus won't (mentally lacking confidence) versus shouldn't (inside a set that generally places them farther down the options in what they should do). This is where a conversation could quickly point to a short shot clock and how it affects motion (better with longer clock) versus a set (a counter to a short clock) under the "team" type offense where motion is only mostly player scouted and sets being more scripted than motion has the set and player within the script scouted. What the shorter clock has done is force teams to attempt a shot relatively quick since the clock is playing D as well as the other team. This naturally leans to the quicker more athletic defender and offensive player which leans to more to offensive players "needing" to be able to score more as an individual. Consequently, the individual player's value is enhanced. The sport for "most" is entertainment value and most people like the track star qualities over the basketball "team" skills many times not noticed and so the rules have followed that line of thought I believe.

Now, I do expect Myles and Cam to grow as players and get "more" capable to "breaking down" the D sometime at Purdue, but that has NOT been their experience at Purdue. Myles is in his first year of playing much and Cam is getting many more minutes as well. Neither last year needed to break down the D since Zach was the "closer" if the clock was winding down and so BOTH have no experience to draw upon in the roles they now have and when you throw in the freshmen...there is a lot of inexperience Purdue relies upon. A couple of years ago it was Jaden that was the closer as the clock was winding down, but soon became the closer when the clock was NOT winding down. ;)

What about this year? Obviously, Purdue needs more out of Myles and Cam offensively. I suspect neither worked on their dribbling near as much as shooting (over the summer) and that was probably almost all catch and shoot and as we have seen teams load up on defending Braden and trying to keep Trey from getting the ball on short drives...and then trying to run Fletch, Myles and Cam off the 3 pt line where only Fletcher has put the ball on the deck...as you and others know.

This is where maybe not depending on them to attack pressure individually should take a backset and just incorporate them into a set as an earlier option where they may get an open look or at least need fewer dribbling to get in scoring range? Or could add motion to more screens (of similar player size that allows more dives, slips and generally more action even if maybe not getting the physical size difference in the screening of a 5 for a 1. Purdue needs to get more offense out of them.

Perhaps this is a time where Matt takes one or both out of the starting lineup and perhaps goes smaller with CJ on the court more and/or Burgess or Berg getting more minutes which if were to happen would most likely see Burgess I'm guessing. Both offer growing pains, but could the pains be short in duration? I have to believe that we see some things different in the next game, but what they will be...who knows? Hopefully, some of that is getting Myles and Cam involved in the offense in ways that their usage is not just a late option behind the arc or an early if open in transition behind the arc.

Maybe 10%.

Loyer is who he is against quick, athletic guards…not very good. Cox is a better option at shooting guard. 30 minutes of ZERO in the National Championship game last season…enuf said.
I think Loyer and Smith had the perfect situation the last two years with Edey. Not that teams don't have to worry about stopping a dominant post player, they can focus on making guys like Loyer, Smith and others try to create and get their own shots, which they all struggle with.
Our lack of basketball athleticism is being exposed.

SEC never embraced the whole "student athlete" thing and in today's world they will thrive. Amazing Pearl is now a saint after his shenanigans at UT. It's a new world with pay to play and unlimited free agency.
Could care less about the 'student athlete' thing. As long as guys win, I don't care about their major, their grades, or whether they graduate.
With all the resources thrown at athletes to help them academically, if they don't care about school, big deal. Just go win games so I can take exciting trips to fun places to watch you play.. They're paid (literally now) to play basketball and there's no loyalty to a program. So let's call it what is is

Smith's efficiency numbers as a junior are worse than his frosh/soph seasons. I think he benefited more than anyone else on the team from having Edey, and now the concerns we had from the time he was recruited (small, not uber-athletic) are starting to pop up. I hope I'm wrong but don't think I am.

Yeah in today’s NIL world, no such thing as a student athlete anymore…which is fine.
