About west coast trips

Sorry, I don' t buy into the travel argument. We were up by 13 at halftime and then after losing the lead, stretched it out to 6 again late in the 2nd. 59-53.
OSU just got hot from 3. Defense wasn't bad, but these guys just hit shots when they needed to. I do think Smith was pressing late in the 2nd, maybe shot hunting a little too much.
Agree, as we have seen this Purdue game every once in a while in past seasons, before any WC trip. The Boilers are riding high coming into a game, get way up in the first half, then the opponent gets going and Purdue goes cold. Seems this stinker shows up once a year, every season. Hopefully this will spark the team to tighten things up through the rest of the season.

Ohio State at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Oh there's plenty in the film session for Painter, and you don't even need to take a hard look at it for instruction. You'd rather that not come after a loss (especially at home), but it's all about how you deal with adversity now.....win as a team, lose as a team - players and coaches alike.

We'll see what happens Friday because that's another set of challenges in that match-up.
if we make 5 or 6 bunnies, game would have been a W

We need to get our shooting back from 3 and incorporate into the offense. Harris is showing he should be sixth man off the bench for the backcourt (yep I said it finally @TwinDegrees2 ). He’s looking confident with his shot, puts pressure on the defense by driving to the hoop, and playing defense well. Colvin and Heide still should get their mins but we need them to produce 8-12 ppg and 4-8 rebounds per game (combined) for us to be really dangerous.

Ohio state woke us back up last year and hope this does the same. The 3 Pete will be tougher now, but still not impossible. If the boys can put together another 7 game win streak, theyll be in good shape.

Eager to see how they bounce back against a really good Michigan team after their first loss in 2025.
need more 3's. didn't make many last night and only made 5 in the 2 west coast games. The team has been getting by beating mostly the bottom feeders by only playing one good half and it caught up to them last night along w/ playing an athletic team ( achilles heel for us ). We also gave up 2 big runs, usually you have to survive one big run.

Colvin and Heide yikes

I think they would do better if we ran a more up tempo O, now w/ a mostly slowed downed half court O that uses up alot of clock the amount of possessions are limited so some of the guys just don't get enough opportunities to shine
I agree. I think if you're going to play those 2 together, you put them on the floor with Smith, Cox and probably Furst and try to speed up the pass, get into transition, get points that way until you bring TKR and Fletch back in to run half court.

Put Newman in, same thing. He bolted and was a superstar and now in the NBA. Oh wait, he went to a lower tier program , got more minutes and had a mediocre career after Purdue. You have to make the most of your minutes in the game and show some consistency from game to game. Heide and Colvin have not. The fact is neither have good handles, the same thing that doomed Newman.
I really like Colvin and Heide, but like a lot of others, I think I've been overly optimistic about their potential because of the occasional highlight dunk and display of crazy athleticism, looking past the fact that both have major shortcomings.
Neither has handles or the ability to get into the lane and finish, unless it's on a fast break.

Ever watch Loyer’s D . Don’t talk about not taking advantage of playing time . When they are in all we do is high ball screen and Smith dump it to Renn. Ever see that double screen we used to run for Dakota ?
Loyers defense isn’t as bad as everyone thinks it is. Parrish got hot last night and whoever was on him, pretty sure he was going to hit those 3s regardless.

I fear that they are exhausted from the west coast trip and only having 2 days in between these games is gonna make it worse. It’s time for the big 3 to step up and push the rest of the team to produce. It’s also time for Smith to get everyone involved on offense.
Yeah for sure. Smith has struggled with his shot the last 3 games…hope he finds it vs Michigan and then a week off until IU. Also, that second foul early in first half was uncharacteristic of him…maybe some fatigue from travel.

Harris and cox seem to be emerging and we need them to be consistent outside of Marley as well when we need points.

Defense overall was fine, Parrish got hot and hit those 3s…the breakdown of letting Thornton get two wide open 3s (one at end of first half and one to start the second) was the a defensive breakdown—I guess it was more so the one to end the half when Myles helped off. Harris either tripped or shoes was stepped on to start the second half.

Three things happen and typically no team doesn’t have let downs. You just hope they aren’t during the tournament. Hope they get some rest and get ready for a big one on Friday.

Don’t use tiredness as an excuse for a loss…good teams find a way to beat a team at home who is only 2 games over .500 coming in. We sucked tonight….and have major issues playing 3 (Smith, Loyer, Kaufman-Renn) on 5. If one of those three is off …then it is very, very difficult to win. Painter isn’t helping the confidence of Colvin and Heidi by not running plays for those two. If Colvin and Heidi bolt after this season for a new start and are very productive elsewhere…that would not surprise me at all. Colvin and Heidi are talented…but Painter is not making use of that talent or does not know how , which frankly is very bad coaching!

Ohio State at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

At least one if not both TKR shots were forced and one where I believe Harris was wide open on the perimeter after having the hot hand. Just thought there was some poor decision making in that stretch that could've went a long way to sealing the game.

The loss sucked sure.. but no time to dwell on it with Michigan coming up in a couple days. Hopefully the loss will be a valuable learning experience and there is a huge fire on the team and we roll UM by 20.

UM is a good team and may give us some fits.. Purdue is more than capable at beating them by a truckload and also losing.. that is what happens when you're reloading.... But.. I think we win comfortably by 10+ as the team plays focused the entire game.

Yes, that was the point of the game I felt was lost it. As you say, coming back and getting the 6 point lead with momentum was great. Unfortunately we missed 3 fairly easy shots in a row at the rim, 2 by TKR, 1 by BS and 1 blocked of CF. As good as Purdue was in making those shots most of the game, missing those at that stage were critical, imho.

Yeah, Tex after we got back to a 6 point lead and had the ball I thought we were ok. Very disappointing loss for sure.

Give Ohio State credit they pressured Smith to the point where he started forcing up shots and took him out of his game.
Ohio State just used the blueprint on how to beat Purdue...pressure pressure pressure.
This offence does not handle pressure on the ball in half court situations.

Usually 2 ways to beat Purdue....
1. Pressure Smith.
2. Hold down our shooting.

They did just ok, on both above, enough to get the win, because mainly our D disappeared in H2. Playing D where we allow a 45 pt half will get you beat alot. Lol
