Interesting analysis

The follow up question is what was the total average points for the top three for all the years....and of course the 4th top average. Along those lines if you added 10-12 points to the average total score and then compared the top three scorers...what percent might that be? All rhetorical questions

Toledo at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I made the comment, maybe here, maybe elsewhere, that against Auburn, Colvin and Heide had a combined 5 (P+R+A). Thought that was bad enough. As you say, tonight was only 2. I do believe it's 75% on them but also 25% on the system. There's just too much Smith/TKR on most possessions. But they need to be able to crash the boards, since that is sorely lacking on the defensive end.
they just dont get the ball enough to make a difference. they combined on sunday for 8 shots while the big 3 took 47.

Colvin and Heide yikes

Furst needs to develop a mean streak. He's physically talented, but plays soft. At least TKR gets pissed off and is willing to match a teams physicality whereas I see Furst looking to the refs expecting a whistle too often.
Agreed. He had an interview a bit ago where the interviewer asked him what he thought he brought to the table that differentiated him from the other bigs. His answer: “joy.” Cringed so hard. That’s the attitude we need from a come in only in a blow out player, not a rotation player.

Interesting analysis

percentages are usually not the whole story. And it's not just scoring that's inconsistent outside the Big 3, it's defense and rebounding. Plus, Edey was better at everything to TKR. Not a knock on TKR, how could anyone be better than Edey at those things given his POTY back to back seasons?

So you need to make up for that loss with either more from the Big 3 (hard ask) or more from the rest, less hard ask but so far mixed results. We have a feast or famine situation with a lot of our players outside of the Big 3. Don't need the feast as much as we need less of the famine.

update on portal

Portal has closed now until April, so I guess we really will not know who we are going to have on this team until late Spring. Should make for interesting Spring practices this year.
Players can still sign with new schools after the portal closes they just have to have their name entered in before the deadline closes. Looks like they have a handful of guys visiting after the new year so a lot can change in the next few weeks before the semester starts.

Agree that it’s probably splitting hairs. I just don’t see how you put a three loss SDSU team in if you’re excluding the four loss Gonzaga team that beat them.
So because a team loses to another, they should automatically be behind them? I mean if SDSU loses a game this week, which is possible as they play at Boise State, then they'll drop. Or if someone behind is just much more impressive. Like if Illinois were to win at Oregon for example.

To me, Colvin and Heide are the same type of player, with providing the same type of results, across the last few games. Split them up, one starts and one subs. Replacing the one starter, I’d start any of Cox, Harris, Burgess or Furst, depending on matchups. Can’t continue to play 3 on 5.
I don't think they are the same type of player, I do think right now they are providing the same type of results, not much.

I think they both have different strengths but both of them are way too invested in making their shots and seem to affected when they miss them. Colvin can provide lockdown perimeter defense and he's clearly a guy that has the hustle ability. Heide can guard bigger people and could be a massive rebound putback guy for us.

I don't know which one you bench because right now neither are providing anything in games. I don't think you want to give up on either because the potential is certainly there, but they have to figure out how to contribute when the three isn't dropping and they can't get so frustrated as they both seem to clearly get when the shot isn't going their way.

Heide seems to just completely disappear, and Colvin seems to take ill advised shots trying to force things, but both end up not helping the team. Play good d, get rebounds, hustle, get putbacks, and let the rest come.

I would have argued with you earlier on, but why not try this? I guess we will see how conf play is and how they do there but if same results happen and we don’t win, then yeah, gotta think you need to switch some things up.

OT: Pinstripe bowl attendance.

There's another baseball field bowl in crappy weather country besides this one. Think I've mentioned it before, if you're going to have those, Wrigley might as well throw their hat into the ring. Sure crime, sure, bad weather, but Wrigleyville makes the sell unique, plus you don't have as many seats you have to sell. This is all based on the idea that these bowls keep going moving forward, which looks pretty iffy. If the rest of broadcast (and a lot of streaming) didn't suck so bad, I'd say it'd be a lock, but the bowls do give people something to put on as background noise during the holiday, and that's worth some $$$ to some station or streamer.

Could work similar to the synthetically enhanced simulated fires/logs or fishtanks....

"I don't know, Larry.....don't think I'm up to it today.....think I'm gonna just go home and catch that Pinstripe Bowl. I'll see you later, ok?"

With last night's game in the rear view, lets see how we fared against your must-have list (a good list, btw!)

-Colvin/Heide: [Grade: F] Oof. More of the same with lots of 0's in the final box. Both guys have mysteriously lost their confidence, and by the end of the game were complete afterthoughts.

- Cox/Smith combo: [Grade B-] We ran a lineup with this combo for a few minutes, and it seemed to be clicking. Cox was the first guy to score other than the big 3, and he did some other good things too. Solid D, steady ball handling, and even led a fast break finding Smith on the wing for a transition 3. Not sure why Paint didn't run with this lineup more.

- Smith looking for his shot: [Grade A] Check. In spades.

- Burgess emerge: [Grade C] He had some good (and necessary) PT. Still learning through some freshman mistakes, but I like his fight. He keeps coming back and doesn't hang his head. Good competitor. Will some of the kinks be ironed out by season's end? It's trending that way.

TKR free throws: [Grade D] Shot 1-4 today. Took a step backwards. This has to be remedied or teams may start playing hack-a-Tre if he doesn't improve.

-Caleb blossom: [Grade B] I've been one of his biggest critics this year, but I thought he had a nice game last night. His effort on the glass was particularly solid, and he is playing with more confidence and physicality under the rim. Free throw shooting is improved too, which is nice to see.

All in all, not bad. I think our greatest need at this point is for Heide to become more comfortable in his role at the 4. If that doesn't happen, a TKR - Furst front line is our next best option. I would like to see Harris replace Colvin in the starting lineup. He seems to understand his role better and his confidence is soaring. Also need to get Berg healthy and available for spot play against larger teams, too.
Can’t pass the class with D/F, good assessment teacher

Dude, your memory is all jacked up. Obama did save the auto industry that Mitt Romney wanted to fail. The auto industry was all jacked up in 2009. The US loaned GM and Chrysler money in which they paid back with interest. When it was all said and done, GM came out as the leader in auto sales.

The Obama auto bailout actually saved US jobs.

Blacks did quite well under Obama. A lot of blacks work at the aforementioned auto manufacturing plants that Obama saved. Many blacks also worked at GM, for example, which shuttered Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn and Saab along with Oldsmobile. I was an engineer with GM at that time and saw unemployment increase at these plants.

Gonzaga has dropped 4 games now. To good teams, but you're not gonna convince me you belong in the Top 25 as of right now at 8-4. Same goes for Purdue. Do I believe Gonzaga, Purdue or even Houston are Top 25 type teams? Absolutely. They just have to win their way back in. SDSU is a pretty good team. I don't think there is a wrong choice at 25 between SDSU, Michigan, Illinois, Houston, Gonzaga and others. It's a pretty tight area when you're sitting around there. Makes for a fun year.

Maobama did not save the auto industry. Oldsmobile, Pontiac both lost at GM at the directive of Mao. With Ford, with Daimler/Chrysler they all lost jobs. Maobama was not an icon of saving jobs, but of selective elimination of jobs. How did black folk do under Mao vs. under President Donald J. Trump? And why did DJT get elected with the help of more blacks and minorities than any GOP candidate before?

Blacks did quite well under Obama. A lot of blacks work at the aforementioned auto manufacturing plants that Obama saved. Black unemployment went from just over 16% down to around 7%. At the time the most money allocated to HBCUs. Crime reform bills. Many blacks did not have health care. The Affordable Care allowed millions of Americans including blacks to get access to health care.

Payne Durham

1st NFL TD catch (regular season. Congrats

O'connell with a good performance as well and the win.
Nice seeing a Raiders win, and their tight end, Brock Bowers, set some NFL records.

Too bad Purdue's Broc Thopson with his two broken legs and that excellent Music City Bowl game against Tennessee never played another down in a game. You see what he did, and then you look at all of these other quitters, what can you say.
