Some positive WBB News

I was very vocal about my concerns about CKG at the time she was hired as a then coach in waiting. I thought it was super bizarre that a coach under investigation for abuse and was simply asked to leave - as she is still coaching at a D2 school - was allowed to pick her successer. Yeah - she is the all time program leader in wins. She also has coached here by far the longest so that isn't exactly that impressive.

They tried to do what Keady did with Painter - and the two situations weren't remotely the same. I was super super SUPER annoyed at the time. I knew the B10 was getting WAY tougher - and I knew we needed a coach that has proven herself at the D1 level. That was not KG. I had the same feelings when football hired Walters. I was skeptical it'll work considering our upcoming schedule - and it was a dumpster fire.

While skeptical - I tried to be optimistic - she brought great energy. Seemed to be a good recruiter - and she still may be a great coach. She is only like 39 years old. A baby when it comes to coaching.

But with the changes to the NIL - and the additions of 4 great WBB teams - we need someone with proven results. I liken Purdue almost to a cult in some instances. They desperately want to keep everything "all in the family" - and like Painter sometimes that works out great. But if we ever expected to compete with the big dogs. We need to find the best coach no matter who they are - what school they went to - male or female. We need someone who can recruit their tail off and play a good and exciting brand of basketball. I'm not seeing that with CKG in year 4. I gave her time - I knew there was going to be ups and downs - but right now... I'm just not seeing it. I like her - think she's a good person - and I'd love to see a former player come in and succeed at the highest level. And may be it'll still happen. But I don't know how many more seasons we can take given how much better the B10 has gotten. After this year the admin really needs to take a good hard look at the program - it's hard breaking up with a former player - and also very awkward. But this is a business - feelings need not get in the way of doing what's right for the program.

We shouldn't be losing by 40-50 pts to any team that is remotely good. That is not going to cut it.

IU looking to pickup big road win at Penn State

Given the easy non-conference schedule and lack of signature wins, I don't think 10-10 in the B1G gets IU in the dance unless you win a couple of B1G tourney games.

It's funny. People outside the program have been saying for a couple of years that IU would be better going smaller. The Reneau injury forced that to happen and you look much better. Ballo had more room to move and Mbako looks much better as a stretch 4 than a 3. Good thing for the rest of the league that Woody isn't smart enough to realize that.
Agreed, 11-9 or maybe even 12-8 is needed. Reneau is one dimensional, he has a decent midrange game, he’s poor on defense and someone that clogs things up.

IU looking to pickup big road win at Penn State

Penn St. losing to IU has them now projected as a NON-tournament team, followed by Northwestern, Indiana then Iowa. Of those 4 teams IU has by far the toughest schedule.
There's an easy way to portray this as 'glass half-full' for IU. That projection would mean a new staff is on the very near horizon. That's no guarantee of success (see previous IU hires) but at least it opens the door to the possibility of success.

Woody is not good and the IU schedule is very, very tough. The next week will not reveal much, but if they lose to USC and Iowa it could derail in a hurry. Or, beating both of those teams and getting to 4-1 in conference gives Woody a cushion to win 40% of the remaining games and still be a tourney team.

IU playing Rutgers without Dylan Harper was a huge break., though winning without Reneau at PSU against their full roster should be cause for optimism.

update on portal

Meh. It was coaching. 1000%

Not to say he’s great or ready to contribute at a school like Clemson but he was out there doing what he was told. It was bad and totally the wrong thing but he had no LBs to back him up and got benched a few times for making plays but not in the flow of what was called on defense.

We should be just fine without him but he’s a guy who still has potential to be good at the CFb level.
That Mitchell Melton would be a nice get if we had the ca$h and he has the interest.
OLB from OSU.

Look, its not a competition, and just because one or the other of us has been wrong about this or that doesn't make us wrong all the time, or make us enemies. EVERYONE on here is here for love of Purdue women's athletics, especially volleyball, basketball, or both. You and I have gone at each other hammer and tongs over CKG. You have had some good points, and so have I. The truth usually lay between what either of us posted. That is why I have always looked forward to your postings.

I think you and I both agree at this point the NAIA coach experiment is doomed to fail, and we both hope the next coaching hire is done with a lot more precision and thought put into it.

Big Ten

didn't see any of the NU game. Quit watching Auburn out of frustration. Watched all of Bama.
Cmon man! It was a good one yesterday! Understand about auburn 😂

Burgess will have pick and pop ability. I don’t think painter doesn’t allow it, it just didn’t make sense for edey in pick and pop last year and the year before to shoot it because it was a lower % shot and take away from Zach offensive rebounding. This year, TKR isn’t great at shooting the 3. And prior to edey we haven’t really had anyone who could pick and pop or at least with the on ball screener.

DJ and RB have shown they can hit the 3 as 7 footers, so I assume that will help change the offense going forward next year and on.

Early season they had many new pieces. They are one of the most talented teams in the big and are starting to figure it out. The next few weeks will tell us if Woody can pull it off. His track record isn’t good.

Not to be picky, but that would be a quadruple double, unless she added double digital blocks.

As to taking joy from the programs demise, you are just being ridiculous. I hate this decline as much as anyone, but it's been clearly coming for years and you are just mad you didn't see it sooner.

Left out the blocks part - she had 10 blocks on top of that.

If you read that comment and instantly thought of yourself then maybe just maybe.... oh never mind, not getting into it today. Have a good day.

I come to bury the playoffs, not to praise them

Football? 8 or 16 teams. Either is good and 12 is odd to me.

Basketball? I know this will be an off-the-wall take, but I'd be a fan of doing it like they used to do the Indiana High School State no-classifications Tournament:
  • All 355 D1 teams make it in.
  • The top 155 or so get a one game bye that gets it down to 256 teams.
  • Seven rounds after that for the crowning of a national champion.

I come to bury the playoffs, not to praise them

If you go by best teams (but keep requirement of 1 lower tier team) it would be more like:

1. Oregon
2. Ohio St
3. Penn St
4. Georgia
5. Indiana
6. Texas
7. Notre Dame
8. Boise St
The other conferences wouldn't have agreed to that. The conference champs from the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and ACC were going to automatically be in. Then the highest ranked G5. That's 5 teams. Then you have your last 3. This year those last 3 were Penn State, Texas and Notre Dame. The Top 8 seeding wise would have been...

1. Oregon
2. Georgia
3. Boise State
4. Arizona State
5. Texas
6. Penn State
7. Notre Dame
8. Clemson

Ohio State would have been the first team out followed by Tennessee and Indiana.

Some positive WBB News

I know the program has a lot of negative vibes right now - to the pleasure of a certain poster here - but I'd like to acknowledge some positive news. Kira Reynolds just recorded a quintuple - which is extremely rare for any basketball player to do at any level. She recorded 14 pts, 18 rebounds, 12 assists and 11 steals. She really seems to be super talented. Her and Gordon may be the keys to possibly get this train moving.
