Toledo at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

In some past years, this would have been a good game. But Toledo is not good this year. It'll be a point guard battle between Smith and Sonny Wilson. Smith should pretty easily win it. But does Purdue cover the 20.5? That'll depend on guys like Colvin and Heide.
Hmmm...

Well Smith won that PG battle easily as I said.

And Purdue didn't cover because Colvin and Heide did absolutely nothing.

Cool. Would still take them over just about everyone on IU. By the way, IU was 1/20 from 3 and had a lot of trouble with Winthrop.

Heard the best transfer in the portal was out too late the night before and got benched.

Still, had Cam and Myles made the jump we are used to seeing in second year players this team would be substantially better
Cam and Myles showed tonight how little they've progressed. Furst, Cox, and Harris should be in the line up before those two and should log more minutes by far.

I thought they'd turned the corner but now I'm seeing them both in a different light. 6-8 minutes a game until they learn the offense and defense.

RIght now, neither should be more than 8th or 9th man.

Coaches have some work to do to bring on these supplemental scorers. Can't just be the B3.

When I see the team -- other than the B3 going 0-7 from three, I wonder how good a decision it was to RS Benter?? He must have been woeful on D, as I know he could have knocked down several of those 3s.

You’re an IU fan that always criticizes Purdue. Unless you’re actually a Purdue fan?
"That always criticizes." I didn't have to criticize. I just made a simple observation. I said Purdue covering the spread would depend on Colvin and Heide. They had 0 points combined and won by 19. The spread end up at 21.5. So I was right. I also said Smith would easily win the PG battle. Which I was right about.

I made the comment, maybe here, maybe elsewhere, that against Auburn, Colvin and Heide had a combined 5 (P+R+A). Thought that was bad enough. As you say, tonight was only 2. I do believe it's 75% on them but also 25% on the system. There's just too much Smith/TKR on most possessions. But they need to be able to crash the boards, since that is sorely lacking on the defensive end.
they just dont get the ball enough to make a difference. they combined on sunday for 8 shots while the big 3 took 47.

Well their track record recently (1 rebound) cut their minutes. Plus they had o in 30 combined minutes. The subs while not great scoring wise did get 17 boards.

Colvin and Heide both should concentrate on just putting the ball through the hoop. Not everything has to be a highlight reel.

Tongue-in-cheek, but only a little. There's value in doing regular things reliably well. The rest of it will come.

Toledo has a 300+ ranked defense and we looked poor against them. I think since this was a get right game at home against an average at best opponent, that we should have made a concerted effort to get everyone going on offense to help get some confidence and maybe a bit of mojo for them as we enter the conference season.
We know what the “big 3” can do. Run some stuff to try to jump start the rest of the guys. Somehow need to figure a way to get some contributions from others or this could be a long year.

Purdue played at a slow pace and had 83 points, a 57.1% eFG% and a 123.2 offensive efficiency. There are a lot of things you can complain about. Purdue's offense was just fine.

Still @ 27 in KenPom (10th offensively) - have been hovering in top 10 for the non-conference.....yeah, it's the defensive efficiency (73rd now) that is the bigger problem - primarily getting worked on the offensive glass and giving up transition points when the turnover bug hits. For the glass half-full guys (sorry can't help it folks.... :) ), there is some light when the newcomers gel more with the system, but Purdue is still going to live and die with trying to keep the paint cleaner and how well they can gang rebound, IMO.

The more help they get with scoring punch gives them a little more margin for error......really interested how they execute on the road tomorrow.....in the hated Barn, as DP pointed out.

Happy New Year, folks!

Happy New Year. The “area for improvement” on defense is due to being Zach-less. Although Zach was not a big time shot blocker, he prevented a lot of shots from being taken near the rim once opponents blew by Purdue’s perimeter/ wing defenders. Of course he made Purdue’s rebounding a strength.

Painter's teams have generally been strong on the glass, but we definitely got spoiled the last few years.
